I've only seen Fail Safe once. It's pretty good.
The professor is extremely based.
But some bits were moronic. Like of course it's gonna be Moscow because how else will the audience understand the stakes? Seems a bit Hollywoodish.
Will watch again sometime.

It's good but way too unrealistic. I absolutely can't buy both sides being this reasonable and cooperative at the height of the cold war while a nuke is on the loose
I just couldn't buy Larry Hagman as the interpreter. Well, that and the idea that the president could just nuke an american city on his own just to show russian premier ivan vodkavitch that nuking moscow was an oopsie.
I guess in the olden days people still thought it made sense that whoever wins the national political popularity contest also got the "NUKE CODES".
I honestly took it completely seriously on watching it. I was on the "edge of my seat" because I really didn't know whether they would drop the bomb or not. Yes there were a few silly/absurdist bits but they weren't that funny, felt more like comic relief that wasn't comic enough to take away from what's actually going on. The ending is also one of the best of any film in history
I think the problem is that, speaking as an ESL speaker, even with C2 levels of English, it's hard to grasp all the jokes because the comedy often relies on intonation and specific phrasing that only native speakers of the language can fully appreciate, and translating Dr. Strangelove or reading subs always kills it, even after multiple viewings i always find myself focusing on what is being said too much before being able to understand the finer jokes.
Language sure is beautiful huh
So do some research then. Watch/read more that pertains to that period to get the references and whatnot.
If there's any subs, have them in english in case you can't make out what someone is saying, i.e. due to their accent.
It's well worth the effort — it's got some hilarious scenes and it remains quite relevant to this day. >t. EbSL - English, blyat, Second Language

the resolution was dumb.
realistically the solution would be a massive amount of cash and other concessions

Was it supposed to be a drama or a comedy?
Yes.

B2 and lots of exposure is all you need.
Fluoride in the drinking water is normal and totally cool!
Did it really imply that? Why doesn't Cinemaphile mention that more?
