>The Wire is not aging very well. It now functions as more of a pre-patriot act time capsule.
That it depicts a time before total warrantless panopticon surveillance is irrelevant to whether or not it's aged well
The Wire has a fair bit of cringe, but it is also sometimes quite subtle, funny, memeworthy, has fine performances, dramatizes ideas well, and is self-referential in a positive, literary way

>Is it overrated?
This is always a stupid question without defining the population you're talking about
Overrated BY WHOM, and how do they rate it relative to some of the other cornerstones of great television?
No, still easily top five television series in terms of sheer quality.
>talk like they're Shakespeare
They explicitly don't do this thoughever, the majority of dialogue is incomprehensible Baltimore slang. >discuss concepts like morality, royalty and fate
Only a small number of the street characters are at that level, most are knuckleheads.
Today, maybe. When it came out, no. The Wire is not aging very well. It now functions as more of a pre-patriot act time capsule.

Literally what did he mean by this?
I'm an excellent native-English speaker, and both of these shows have to be watched with subs. There are many, many things you wouldn't understand otherwise.
The wire is still the greatest iq filter to this day. If you don't enjoy it you're actually a pea brain mongo even if you think you're a smart boy. Women don't get the wire and think it's too slow, you're not a woman are you?
Yes, you were. The wire and the sopranos both maintain the top spots and will likely never be beaten in our current climate. Sopranos s1 does seem a little dated but you should still be into it by ep5, but it does get way better
People who say that can really only appreciate the sopranos because of the “sit the viewer down and slowly explain to them what happened and how everyone felt” format. They’re morons.

To be fair the therapy is functionally no different from when a character from the Wire has a monologue about anything

The wire never has an instance where >thing happens >next scene is a monologue explaining it

They usually monologue in the moment to moralise about something >how will I reach these kidz?
They're both caricatures. Omar has great charisma and all but drug kingpin getting shivers hearing the name of a guy walking the streets alone with a shotgun is comic book tier in a otherwise realistic series. I don't care if it was based on a real guy, I'm certain the real guy was not robbing drug dealers then swag walking the next morning in the same neighborhood buying cereal boxes.
It's unrealistic they don't just kill him. Having a shotgun doesn't mean you're invincible and they can't shoot you when you're not looking. Everybody in the hood is too afraid of omar to even try anything and you know that's something that would never happen in real life with a guy fricking with drug dealers. I like that he dies exactly like this, shot by some kid when he wasn't looking, but it took too long to happen. Realistically Omar would have gotten killed the next day he assaulted his first stash house then had the audacity to walk the same streets like nothing happened. Come on.
They do just kill him though. And by they I mean one kid. And it happens because Omar isn’t expecting it.
The rest of the time, they are actively trying to kill him. Which means he’s on guard.

There's one scene he just knocks some door and they throw the bag to him from a second floor, he didn't even want to rob them. Come on. They could just shot him then and there because he wasn't even aware that was a stash house. Like I said his superhomie invincible status is ridiculous.

You’re confusing two scenes. One scene he just stops for a cigarette and a package drops out the window. This is played as a joke.
The other scene he walks up on a corner, full body armor, shotgun out. They guys on the corner run, because none of them know how to shoot, much less wants to get shot. He walks down the street, counting the houses, and stops at the third, because he knows that’s where the stash is. They try to say they have a Mac-10 in there, he knows they don’t, knows the name of the kid making he threat (I thinks not Tyrell), and reminds him he can just keep coming back.
A point that gets hammered pretty hard is basically no one on the corner knows how to shoot.
It's very successful at its main aim of portraying a documentary-like take on Baltimore's dysfunctionality. There are some subplots though and characters that diminish the nonfiction-like take, such as Brother Mouzone, Hampsterdam, serial killer subplot, Omar. It also tends to be thematically repetitive -- the same ideas are hammered home episode after episode. But it's excellent overall and much better than the vast majority of slop on tv.

Why not? I enjoyed the rewatch
bro they use pagers

as an esl this and deadwood filtered me hard, can't be bothered to watch with subtitles
I am born and raised near Baltimore and I need subtitles when the homiez talk hood jive. Don’t feel bad Anon.

made before smartphones and cameras were everywhere
that alone makes it feel from another era

When I watched The Wire, I couldn't stop until I finished it. When I tried Sopranos, I dropped it five episodes in. Was I filtered?

This is true.
I will never ever watch this show
>just like you'll never ever have sex
why not anon?
how could it? its the best show of all time, a literal 10/10. you can overrate something that is perfect
boring plot, boring characters, uninteresting setting
post your top 3 shows anon and let's see
The Sopranos is in a league of its own, can't think of anything on the same level. Other than that the last great series I watched was Chernobyl
>, can't think of anything on the same level.
> Deadwood
> Generation Kill
> The Wire
> The Shield
> Gomorrah
> True Detective Season One
All slop.

>slop

He didn’t say that.
S1 sucked until that grandmother finally died. I hated her scenes. I was going to drop it off they didn’t end her part.
She didn’t die till season 3
Nah it's actually great
Every single "prestige" show without exception is extremely overrated
Superhomie omar holds it back. Other than that it's an amazing series. But it's not better than sopranos.
Omar isn't too unrealistic. This guy on the other hand...
They're both caricatures. >it’s unrealistic for corner boys, literal children, to be be afraid of a guy who comes out of nowhere, with a shotgun, and a willingness to use it.
He didn’t have a reputation before he robbed the first stash house. But hey, this and
are maymays from people who’ve never watched the show.
