Smartphones. Hacks and piracy also killed sales, so Sony tried to make everything with the Vita proprietary and it didn't pick up steam the same way. It also wasn't as easy to hack at first, and didn't have as many games.

You hit the nail on the head. The PSP and the 3DS don't actually differ much in horse power, let alone the Vita that was a lot more powerful.
But Nintendo doubled down on making games specifically for that console and not just ports.
Sony is notoriously anti-consumer/anti-fun. The PSP really thrived due to custom firmware, which allowed homebrew and cheating online. You had plugins that allowed you to watch youtube back in the day (as well as xvideos and pornhub kek), snes/n64 emulators, custom web browsers, and even custom games written exclusively for the psp by indie devs. Sony hated all of this and wanted to lock you into their shitty ecosystem.

From what I understand, Sony (or any other company) has never been this aggressive. The issue with Sony is that they actively hate and screw over paying customers, while Nintendo just hates and tries to screw over everyone they can find.

If you bought a digital game in 2006 on psp or ps3 it's still on your account. Nintendo makes you rebuy games every single hardware release, so that title goes to Nintendo.

I wish there was a decent portable console the same size as the GBA SP, the perfect size, and flips in half for easy travel.
The GBA was the last goated Nintendo portable as far as I'm concerned. DS and 3DS never really got me the same way and by that point I could just emulate GBA perfectly on a PSP.
DS has some good 2D games, I wish the PSP took more advantage of its hardware in that regard but it focused too much on 3D.
Even DS made that mistake with Metroid Hunters when they could've made a proper sequel to Metroid Dread for example.

Sony could have entered mobile device market with PSP. They had expertise and manufacturing capabilities, but they didn’t dare, even Nokia lost the opportunity to become what Apple is today. Even after Microsoft attempt to become mobile phone manufacturer, the couldn’t. Was it all Steve Jobs genius that made all of them to fail?
Sony still make phones, and the Sony Ericsson models were among the most popular options at the time of the PSP.
They even tried making a PSP phone, which in some respects was a better emulation device even if it didn't have as many exclusives.

I've talked about this to a few people and they tend to agree. There's something about modern phones that is very same-y and the soul isn't there anymore.
The experimental phase before the iPhone model completely took over was the most interesting.
It really seemed like every company was pushing what they could in terms of design for phones.
It was supposed to be Dunkirk, but Shape of Water svept the Oscars and Guillermo got the Best Direction BAFTA, He probably was a bit miffed about that.

PSP is still excellent handheld. I cannot believe they fricked up controls on VITA that much.

NTA but I find the Vita controls superior in that they added a second analog stick. Nowadays you may as well get a Vita over a PSP as it does everything the PSP does thanks to hax.
I can't imagine the second stick being a detriment anyway. I've been messing about with emulation and stuff on the PSP lately, some stuff works but a lot of it is abandoned naturally.
The emulation on the Vita is somewhat better, but oddly enough, neither got SNES emulation to run perfectly. Nowadays you can play SNES games in your browser and even hook up a controller.
The Vita could run PS3 ports too, like Mortal Kombat 9. It's a really powerful machine but Sony did frick all with the potential.
90% percent of SNES games run fine on Vita/PSP. It's just one of those consoles with weird hardware like the PS3 where it took a long time to emulate.
I still use Vita for remote play with PS4 when family wants to watch something else, it's great machine.
It also had special sniper function with Deus Ex Human Revolution, neat stuff.

You could use Vita as a controller for Human Revolution and the Vita screen would serve as inventory and sniper screen.
PSP had great placement even though you had to use 'claw' with some games, but Vita put the analogs too low and DPad diagonaly so you can only press one or the other, mostly because while L1 and R1 is okay, L2 and R2 is on the touchad on the back of the console, and the grip is only for the last third of your fingers.
It's hard to hold it without propping it against your knee or something, had to buy special case.

Maybe it is was just me and you won't have any problems with it, but Vita itself is excellent piece of hardware and it has entire PSP library, I just wasn't able to properly play not insignificant number of them.
Good example - I was able to master Monster Hunter Freedom on PSP, I was unable to play it on Vita.
