I don’t know. I saw the force awakens like 10 years ago and I can barely remember it and the last jedi was just so god damn awful and her character just hung out in a cave the whole movie. I never saw the third movie. I guess yeah she was but god who cares? Those movies were such shit that’s the least of their problems
She's just a flat, boring character that appeals to nobody. No need for meme terms. Some committee of middle aged women built this character to check off some boxes and be totally unproblematic and that's why it's horrible.
The bigger problem is that the plot makes no sense and goes nowhere.
Basically this. The mindset behind the making of the film was not the same as George Lucas genius. It was all about political correctness and women self insert fantasy Mary sue.
She was first of all a really bland generic hero character with nothing to make her stand out and worst of all no convincing agenda.
All those "what do you mean she is just like Luke!" Arguments are arguments against her character.
Anyone not holding this exact same view is a brainlet or hasn't seen the movie. It is the worst movie of all time. It's insulting how dumb does Disney think women and black people are.
Exactly. I wouldn't mind it if someone made an actually good movie with good characters. Are the writers aware that she's a Mary sue? Or do they think it was good writing on their part?
>Soon after Paula Smith and Sharon Ferraro launched one of the earliest “Star Trek” fanzines, they started noticing a pattern to the submissions they were receiving. Each began the same way: a young woman would board the starship Enterprise. “And because she was just so sweet, and good, and beautiful and cute,” Smith recounts, “everybody would just fall all over her.”
Looking back, Smith says, it was obvious what was going on: “They were simply placeholder fantasies,” she says. “And, certainly, I can't say I didn't have placeholder fantasies of my own.” But the thing that had attracted the two friends to “Star Trek” was that the show—which had gone off the air for good in 1969, four years before they launched their zine—was intelligent. These submissions, says Smith, were not intelligent. >“There were very good stories coming out at that time,” adds Smith, who is now 67. “But there was always a huge helping of what we started calling in letters to the editors of other zines, a Mary Sue story.”

Isn't exactly walking on sunshine and rainbows and beating the emperor because you feel like it
Anakin works because he turns to the bad side, by mary suing him up you're just building up the conflict that the main characters will have to face. Rey could have worked as a near unbeatable force prodigy villain
she's still a Palpatine and if Marvel were smart, they'd turn all their Mary Sue role models into villains.
now THAT would be actual subvert expectations!

there is no explaining this. even if she had super human senses she would at least need some training or introduction.
eh dont think about it. its moronic anyway.
kek, you've got a point. It was honestly a good arc. People want to shit on that movie individually, but I think when the trilogy is watched consecutively, the atmosphere shifting as anakin matures is fantastic.
I don't know how intentional it was, but I think the tone-shifts add to the original trilogy. Going from a relatively family-friendly romp about the superkid being whisked to become a cool jedi, to the growing boy that gets to fight robots and flirt while breaking every rule in the book in a fun way, to a jaded and broody young adult that is angry at the world around him and gets sucked in by the allure of power.
At each stage, the complexity of the story, politics, danger, and relationships increase, mirroring anakin's maturation. It feels out of place if you're expecting a uniform tone, but the contrast between the desert wonderkid who builds and races his flying go-cart and the tragedy of the man he becomes as he tries to control more and more of the world around him to shape it to what he wants has a certain beauty to it.
That all being said, I don't care much for Star Wars at this point anyway. One of the only times I became interested again was when the solo movie was announced, since I was big into the extended universe as a kid and loved the Han Solo book trilogy. The movie sounded like it fell flat in comparison, so I'll just live with my own memories.
The Mandalorian sounds like people liked it, but it doesn't sound like my speed. I wrote fanmail back in the day to try and get a Republic Commando game but for mandalorians or bounty hunters. It's hard to live up to the expectations and wants of what I set my heart on as a kid. Frick a story and side-character development, I just want an all gas, no breaks power fantasy of sci-fi violence if we're bringing in the mythical badass warrior people into this. I don't want family-friendly feel goods about another magic child.
I crave war crimes and tragic anti-heros with no redemption.
Best bit about the Prequels was of how the Jedi failed Anakin. Had Qui Gon lived Anakin would have had his mother and become the most powerful Jedi there ever was.
The Jedi suffered from Hubris, all of them suffered it. Poignant scene in Attack Of the Clones was of Obi and Mace lamenting about how the Jedi bece high huffing their own farts, not realizing such an observation included them and Yoda.
No one told anakin that being a cool jedi involved bureaucracy.
Everyone wants to be a badass soldier in the military, but no one wants to clean the motorpool, do 350-1 training, or go to leadership schools.
I agree that Mace and Obi could not see past their own involvement in maintaining the status quo, but such is the nature of a system that places importance on control of emotions. They recognize as a concept that they have biases, although they are not always cognizant of them, and they place trust in the system to keep them reigned in. This collective desire to be part of a tempering body restricts them from actually being able to effect certain changes.
They state that the Force is a pervasive and all-encompassing entity, but they frequently ignore or quash the individualistic nature of someone's connection to it. This leads to gut feelings being hamstrung by "impartial" observers, because their whole deal is controlling emotions for making decisions. This leads to Anakin bottling emotions and bucking the system instead of merely leaving the order (which a jedi of his status could do).
nobody fricking liked the sequels until you zoomers "ironically" started liking the movies, which mutated into an unironic following of morons. The only fanbase the prequels have are kids that weren't even born when the prequels came out.
Miss me with that whataboutism, homosexual. Also >actually defending sequel movie characters
Yeah, I never understood why people are now liking the prequels. Even worse is that many of them think the majority of the fanbase feels the same, like we all now suddenly see how great they were. Reality check: they still kinda suck.
liking the prequels didn't happen in recent history or just because of the sequels, it always had its share of fans. what happened is for the past 20 years, loudmouth morons would shut down any positive discussion of them. i used to post on the boba fett fan club back when revenge of the sith came out, and everyone pretty much agreed it was a solid film, the only debate was whether or not clones or phantom was worse, but there were plenty of bits from those two that people enjoyed. the only folk that truly hated all three were angry manchildren who were sad that they had overhyped themselves up for the movies and realized that the films were not meant for loser homosexuals like them. when tfa came out and said losers realized what a piece of shit they had been given due to their own stupidity, they had to either double down or renege their prior feelings for the pt. then you saw people start to open up about their liking of the prequels, and suddenly it was no longer a crime against humanity to dislike the films.

Ah, so you were the minority that actually really liked the films. Nothing wrong with that, just sad you can't face reality that the majority didn't love them.
it's true that the people who really liked them are a minority. however general audiences gave them a thumbs up across the board, or liked 1, disliked 2 and then liked 3.
Jake Lloyd was bullied so much over Anakin he retired from acting 2 years after Phantom Menace's release. You'll find ass loads of coverage about the ST's cast receiving internet hate. Clearly none of them got it as bad as he did if he felt the need to leave.
>You'll find ass loads of coverage about the ST's cast receiving internet hate. Clearly none of them got it as bad as he did if he felt the need to leave.
that's because the sequel outrage was fake. yeah a lot of people on here and other sites talked shit about daisy and kelly, and they were supposed bullied off of instagram (despite not having accounts prior to the movies and to this day no images have surfaced of the DMs they received). people tried talking shit about adam driver but he doesn't use social media so it didn't affect him.
Everyone knows the way Anakin was portrayed and introduced in TPM was fricking fanbaiting garbage

Luke is a Chosen One. It's an archetype that fits the story George wanted to tell. Rey is a Mary Sue because she's better than Luke, is loved by everyone, has an even more super special origin than Luke, and invalidates and replaces all of his accomplishments.

What is her origin? I didn't see the third one. Isn't she Palpatine's granddaughter or something somehow?

Red Leader makes a perfect, on-target shot, and the missile doesn't go in anyway. Luke destroying it was a literal miracle in the biblical sense, the Death Star was invincible and the Empire would have won had there not been a Jedi Acolyte flying in the Rebel strike force. This is why Rogue One making the exhaust port a planned, intended weakness is moronic

luke didn't use prescience, he used the force in order to curve the bullet. the problem with the trench run was that it was a straight shot from the wrong angle, a torpedo can't fricking curve unless it has a fin on it and the proton torpedoes were just balls of energy. luke literally used the forced to steer it in the nick of time so that it didn't bank on the side and prematurely detonate.

The plan, before Luke was ever involved, was for any of those pilots to shoot that shot and destroy the death star. Literally any competent pilot was expected to make that shot. They knew it was going to be difficult but they were planning on doing it themselves, and none of them were force users. Luke wasn't even going to use the force, it wasn't until obi wan spoke to him and instructed him to use the force that he decided to, and he took a deep breath and focused, you know, because he's not sure that he's just going to automatically succeed. I like rey who can use Jedi mind tricks without even knowing what a Jedi is.

even without the extra biggs scene, luke's piloting abilities are mentioned prior to the battle, and luke himself chastises fake wedge about being able to bullseye a womp rat on tatooine in beggar's canyon, which is similar to the trench run. luke literally had all the necessary experience to complete the objective whereas the rest of the rebellion was a bunch of weekend warriors that read manuals. think of it like in top gun maverick when all the kids are trying to complete the course but can't get the timing right, then maverick shows them all up because he has the necessary experience in the f-14. i will fricking murder you all in your sleep.

seriously, go back and watch TFA. She grew up alone in a remote hostile region of Jakku. She climbs around imperial starships to scavenge parts to survive. She is agile and strong while descending ropes and climbing sand dunes, and these scenes mimic Luke's training on Dagobah, when Yoda makes him run and swing through the swamps for conditioning.
As far as fighting skills, she has presumably been fighting off robbers and rapers her entire life. Remember that scene where she beats down the two guys who try to steal BB8? And when she chases Teedo off?
Ok, now think back to Luke. He grew up pampered on blue milk on a moisture farm. He gets bested by the sand people without a fight, and has no idea how to handle himself in the cantina dispute in Mos Eisley. He is mostly just a whiny kid with big dreams.
Rey may be untrained in the Force, but her combat skills are already there. She might be a little clumsy at first with a lightsaber, but she has never been afforded the luxury of an easy win. And furthermore, she has no desire to be a hero. (Remember when she saves Finn from the Rathtar by closing the door and then says "That was lucky!")
As far as pilot skills, I think we can all attribute those to "Jedi reflexes", because I don't think either Anakin, Luke, or Rey had much training. In fact, Rey probably had the most technical experience around the mechanics of spacecraft, having picked them apart her whole life. Anakin fixed and built things as a slave, but he was much younger, so less experience. And Luke- how on earth did he ever get good at flying, other than bullseyeing womp rats in his t16?

>As far as pilot skills, I think we can all attribute those to "Jedi reflexes", because I don't think either Anakin, Luke, or Rey had much training
rey is the only one that actually can be solely attributed to jedi reflexes, despite luke and anakin also having them. rey basically rode on the equivalent of an electric scooter. anakin was racing hot rods as a kid and luke had something like a windsail or gyrocopter that he would snipe animals with. there was the quad jumper thing that gets blown up but if you look it up the ship is pretty much a space hoopty. the main point is that luke and anakin are both fairly accounted for in the piloting department prior to them getting into starfighters, whereas rey gets put into the falcon for the first time and magically aces it after one or two dips.

The total extent of Luke's training was:
>A few hours of Official Licensed Jedi Training Remote™ exercises on the Falcon on the way to Alderaan >A weekend jogging around a swamp with Yoda >Six months of self-taught study and discipline
This is enough for Luke to be considered a fully-fledged Jedi Knight in the RotJ. It's just that prequelgays will do ANY kind of mental gymnastics to try to pretend Luke got more training than that in order to reconcile the OT with the prequels, where to become a Jedi you need to be a kidnapped child who studies for 20 years at the Official Yoda Training Academy™ whacking around glowbats with your youngling buddies so you can level up and pass the Jedi Exams, whereas in the OT Jedi Training was more about learning how to let go of rational thought and allow the Force to guide your actions. My favorite is when they say that Dagobah was in a "time dilation field" or something so they can pretend Luke was actually on Dagobah for like a year

This implies that Luke has yet to fulfill the promise he made to Yoda in ESB, prequelgays literally have not watched the OT. Also do you really think Luke sat on the revelation that Vader was his father and never asked Yoda about it for an entire year? Get real

I didn't suggest that he spent the entire year there but I find it hard to believe he never returned during that time.
That he never asked Yoda about Vader until that time is a good point but at the same time it might be hard to bring up and every time he was there he wanted to broach the subject during training he faltered. He only brings it up as Yoda is on his deathbed and even then he finds the question hard to ask and almost hesitates.

Where do people even encounter the term gadding in modern media? I only know it from 100 year old books.
It wasn't his first time, they establish he's a pilot earlier in the movie.
He had tons of help, the entire squadron was shot down except biggs and wedge, Han had to save his ass as well. Also, he wouldn't have even known about the weak point without the rebels stealing the plans in the first place, something he had nothing to do with.
He also got his ass kicked by Vader the first time they fought, Vader was just fricking with him and effortlessly fricked him up the moment he got serious.
You can keep trying to hate on Luke, but he's not a Stu.
>he's a pilot earlier in the movie.

Exactly. Luke has former experience in flying ships, but rey has no former experience with using the force, yet she effortlessly uses Jedi mind tricks without even having the knowledge of what that even is. When Luke shot the death star, in that critical moment, obi wan reminds him and assists him in using the force, but rey doesn't need any assistance, she can escape a full security prison with the force that she has never heard of. All by herself, without any help or teaching.
Anonymous
Ummm ackshually the T-16 isn’t capable of space flight. It’s more like a jet plane.
In the first Disney Star wars rey uses Jedi mind tricks without ever being taught how. Luke spent the entire first movie under the tutelage of a Jedi master and former brother of the boys father. Remember the first time he held a lightsaber and the floating orb shot him? He didn't dodge it on the first try like a Gary stu, he failed to use the force correctly, since, you know, he had never used the force before. But obi wan instructed him "use your feelings" and on the next try he got it, a simple block. A very basic technique that he failed on the first try, and he was so excited that he did it. Rey simply used a Jedi mind trick just cuz.
Luke is basically a completely different person in every movie though. In the first movie he's a talented young farm boy thrust into a world of adventure, in Empire he's now a fledgling hero aware of his strengths but not his weaknesses and pays dearly for his arrogance, by Jedi he's wised up and near fully matured. Luke always has the base traits of a farm boy goober and he's a bit brash. But he significantly changes in and between every film.
Rey is basically static as a character, her only growth coming from being given weapons or powers. Thats why she fricking sucks.
How is this even supposed to be used? I'm guessing the top part goes up the ass and the bottom bit vibrates on the clit even then that looks horribly uncomfortable.
You out the thing into the vegana (the upper part), it's curved upwards because that's where the female g-spot is.
The thing that loops around it (the square part) is applied to the clitoris outside for simultaneous stimulation.
Technically this could be used for men in a near similar way (the prostate is the male g-spot) since the "clit" part could be applied to the perineum, which is another erogenous zone for men, so the prostate could be massaged from two sides simultaneously.
Damn, "journalists" really scrambling for hate clicks.
holy fricking shit I thought this was Salon or something. WIRED??? You used to be able to trust Wired as a cool tech magazine. What the frick happened?
Do prostitutes require character arcs or is the whole story supposed to just conveniently justify their sex life? Asking for the Force Ghost of Anakin Skywalker.
Yeah, that was such bullshit. She only became aware of the force hours earlier and it was even explained to her by a Jedi, it was basically an intangible idea and she has no concept of how and what it's capable of and yet suddenly she's a Jedi master? Fricking bullshit.
I can't help but nod in agreement. It was bullshit and none of us would have ever let that go into the movie if we were writing it. We should write a movie bros.
>Is Rey a Mary Sue?
Absolutely not. This is how women are, they play life in easy mode - whereas men have to earn their powers.
This is reflected clearly in life, women in their 20s have everything they want. Men in their 20s work hard to achieve status, money and power.
Men in their 30s now have what women in their 20s want. Women in their 30s are starting to be ignored by men, and are desperate for a man to provide for them.
This is not saying to be hurtful, this is reality. If the truth hurts, you might be living a lie.
>men in their 30s have what women in their 20s want
This is delusional mgtow cope. At best you're going to get a roastie who's been run through by every frickboy in town.
This is the main point that needs to be emphasized, which is that the people behind the character are the reason for the character being what it is. The writers behind the character wanted a female lead, because women empowerment, and also because of women empowerment they made her OP in every way, because women empowerment. It's their feminist fantasy. The ultimate Mary sue.
>The writers behind the character wanted a female lead, because women empowerment
well no, this was purely KK's request, but it was also partially based on george's sequel outline, he had a male/female duo sharing lead roles from the start and at kennedy's behest it was then given solely to the female character, which became rey. if i really had to guess i'd say that despite the trilogy being written entirely by men they were afraid of making rey anything less than perfect in order to appeal to the new queen of lucasfilm, even ignoring the fact that none of them can actually write and kasdan was brought in for legacy points and didn't actually contribute anything.
Let’s go over the checklist >no intentional personality flaws that aren’t designed to make her look badass/sympathetic
Check >instantly loved or obsessed over by almost everyone she meets, with any exceptions being irrelevant or seeing the error of their ways
Check >black hole that drags every plot thread into her orbit, regardless of how important she is to it
Check >improbable abilities that are never explained
Check >complete lack of scenes that (intentionally) make her look bad
Check
Yeah it's sort of pointless to try to change people's minds, and really, nobody thinks she isn't a Mary sue, those people saying she isn't, and calling Luke a Mary sue, those are just trolls being ironic, it's dumb. She's not a good character though. Nobody would even attempt to make an unironic post about how "rey is a good character".
She was barely a character. Mary Sues are fine if they aren’t boring. Sherlock Holmes and Conan are Mary Sue as frick but they’re engaging personalities and their stories are entertaining.
No, Rey isn't a Mary Sue, because that term only applies to characters in fan fiction, and Disney Wars does not unfortunately count as fan fiction unless you want start radically redefining words.
All female characters are by definition Mary Sues:
Women are weak mentally and physically, so they evolved to be spiteful, disloyal, and manipulative. When you see one behaving outside of their genotype it is instantly jarring. This dissonance is named Mary Sue.
Gosh dang it "Mary Sue" consists of >new character being jerked off by old cast >said character is also as good as or better than established characters >plot revolves around them
This was "Mary Sue", by using the term for characters that are missing one if not all of the points you might as well b***h about this "red herring" character or whatever else your ape brain has on it's fringe
Yes. She literally randomly started using Jedi mind tricks like she knew how to do it all along. Luke is the son of the literal force child and had to be trained by the greatest Jedi master to ever live in order to be a competent Jedi in time to fight Vader. But regardless of the logic behind it, when I watched the first Disney Star wars movie I did not feel like I was rooting for rey. The special effects were cool so I kind of enjoyed the movie, like eh that was an okay movie, but it's not like anything George Lucas can make in terms of plot and characters and everything. The movie was okay at best. I'm not hating on it but anyone who says rey isn't a Mary sue is lying or delusional. Literally the perfect example of a Mary sue.
they gotta drum up the hype machine for the next daisy movie so it stands a chance of at least breaking even and not flopping like the last two nuwars films did
Exactly. I wouldn't mind it if someone made an actually good movie with good characters. Are the writers aware that she's a Mary sue? Or do they think it was good writing on their part?
>Are the writers aware that she's a Mary sue?
well jj can't write to save his life, so i'm gonna say no he wasn't aware. i mean when rise came out he was trudging some shit along like "haha since rey is a palpatine it means she can do anything lolol xd"
>LIKE IT GOY, JUST SHUT THE FRICK UP AND LIKE IT
Why are they like this? Just go back to the drawing board dumbfrick, she had 3 shitty movies where she hogged the fricking screen, it's over.
She's probably a Mary sue and I've only seen the first movie so I can't really say for sure. When I saw the first movie in theaters I thought it was alright. I didn't leave the theater with some strong hatred for it or anything because I really didn't expect it to be anything like what George Lucas made since he didn't make it, I didn't get my hopes up and it was cool visually but that was it. It was entertaining enough to sit through without being bored but it wasn't a cinematic masterpiece or a masterpiece of writing like George Lucas would have made if he were to make more movies. Maybe one day I'll finance a dvd player and watch the next two movies to see if rey has any character development or anything. The other two movies are also probably mid at best and that's okay. I don't really care.
i'll save you the economic trouble and give you the qrd on what happens in the two after
TLJ:
- rey initially gets rejected by luke but r2 convinces him
- she doesn't actually learn anything
- she beats kylo ren a second time
- despite not having learned anything, rey is now an accomplished lightsaber duelist and can actively use the force as if she's had years of training
TROS:
- rey can suddenly shoot lightning from her hands, as it's revealed she's the granddaughter of palpatine
- she beats kylo ren again
- she beats the emperor by holding two lightsabers together
- she decides to adopt the skywalker surname
oh he was in them alright. last jedi is his swan song. treated well and cool scenes, no. his entire character arc is reversed so that rey can get a leg up on him. he then dies a pointless death and only appears as a ghost in rise.
I think godlessness is the cause of poor character writing. When George Lucas made the star wars movies he obviously had a lot of inspiration from the bible, the holy bible, the best book ever written with the best main character of all time, Jesus. So George made an evil Jesus character and it's amazing. George was inspired by the word of god and let the word of god inspire him in writing these movies. Even the Harry Potter movies have Christian themes since Harry Potter is a sacrificial lamb like Jesus, he dies and resurrects, sacrificing himself for the greater good. All of the best films and stories get inspiration from the bible. But the Disney Star wars films? Godless abominations. The people behind the film are godless, they don't know god or love god like George Lucas does. And it shows in their films.
Yes but she was on purpose. Everything was supposed to come easy for her and she was supposed to always succeed at things she tried because in the original outline she was supposed to try and fail HARD to redeem Kylo Ren. The message of the sequels was supposed to be that you can’t help someone if they don’t want help, no matter how much you care for them or are good at everything else, it’s not your fault, in the end a person has to want to change. That’s the whole reason Driver signed on in the 11th hour and why he refuses to talk about the character today, they changed the arc he agreed to protest and he was fricking pissed.
t.worked on the films, just wait til there is a tell all about all of this.
She literally fricking just learned the force, grabbed a lightsaber for the first time in her life, and beat the new Darth Vader trained since birth by Luke Skywalker.
Are you fricking kidding me.
What boggles my mind is that people are so wrapped up in their culture was nonsense, that no one could ever just say “yeah, she kinda is.”
No, they have to write these horseshit articles. “Umm, no sweetie, she’s not poorly written. You’re just a misogynist.”
I think what Disney should learn from this thread is that characters should have some sort of explanation for why they're able to do everything they do. What is the explanation for why rey can use the Jedi mindtrick? Because she's a palpatine? Not convincing. Ruins my immersion. Maybe if they added some other force.ghost character or something which was secretly aiding her the whole time and none of it was her own abilities, or something. Maybe palpatine has some love in him after all and he isn't completely evil and he loves his daughter so he is constantly using the force to track her whereabouts and aid in her in her endeavors and protect her. Or maybe he's actually a piece of shit and using his own daughter to accomplish some evil goal, like how aizen uses Ichigo, and Ichigo was being basically raised as a soul eater by aizen, unbeknownst to Ichigo. Literally any other reason explanation besides she's just a palpatine. Do something. You're fricking paid to do this shit and we hated it. Garbage as people getting paid to do shit that we could do better. And also, I think these threads should always include the question "how could reys character have been better?" So then it's not just a whine fest but also somehow productive and develops solutions.
wow anon i can't believe you're so sexist and your knees are so soggy why can't you just accept that women are just as beautiful and as powerful as any man can be don't be such a hater you racist xenophobe #blm #lovetrumpshate #backthebluenomatterwho
Or literally just establish that, since being a kid, she's always had these strange powers and could manipulate people into doing what she wants, like Anakin in Episode 1 using the force since being a little kid. Because she's a Palpatine.
Except she wasn't planned to he one, the whole point of the first 2 movies was that she's a nobody with no special parents nor powers.
[...]
holy fricking shit I thought this was Salon or something. WIRED??? You used to be able to trust Wired as a cool tech magazine. What the frick happened?
>What the frick happened?
forcing women into stem happened
The trilogy could have been saved if they had just turned Rey into a villain. This could have been her Darth Rey origin story and set up future films but nah, they couldn't think that far ahead.
Yes
No, he’s technically a Gary Stu now
I'd Mary her Sue.
>No need for meme terms.
Is it a "meme term" if I call you a mentally moronic piss baby?
troony Black person go dilate and have a nice day
now we're talkin
Basically this. The mindset behind the making of the film was not the same as George Lucas genius. It was all about political correctness and women self insert fantasy Mary sue.
If she isn't, then no one is.
She was first of all a really bland generic hero character with nothing to make her stand out and worst of all no convincing agenda.
All those "what do you mean she is just like Luke!" Arguments are arguments against her character.
I got more out of her character from the thousands of AI pics than I did in the movies
Those AI pics somehow softened my perception of the character. Like maybe she deserves another chance. I dunno its weird.
She's not just a mary sue she's probably the worst offender in cinema history.
I challenge anyone to find a worse mary sue than rey.
Anyone not holding this exact same view is a brainlet or hasn't seen the movie. It is the worst movie of all time. It's insulting how dumb does Disney think women and black people are.
>It's insulting how dumb does Disney think women and black people are.
tbf that would be hard to overestimate
Exactly. I wouldn't mind it if someone made an actually good movie with good characters. Are the writers aware that she's a Mary sue? Or do they think it was good writing on their part?
Reminder the term "Mary Sue" was coined by a woman.
Even women knew their shit stank bad. Unfortunately twitter rotted their brains
It was not coined by a woman it was named after a character created by a woman who exemplified the concept.

That's a sexist hate fact
She's girl kirito
Yes, then he turned into a genocidal maniac before ending up burned alive, then encased in armor, and spent the rest of his life humiliated, alone and miserable
and i thought karma whoring was exclusive to reddit
>Deep emotional flaws of arrogance and insecurity lead to dark side seduction, the loss of his wife, and being defeated and humiliated in battle vs his former master
Isn't exactly walking on sunshine and rainbows and beating the emperor because you feel like it
Anakin works because he turns to the bad side, by mary suing him up you're just building up the conflict that the main characters will have to face. Rey could have worked as a near unbeatable force prodigy villain
>Rey could have worked as a near unbeatable force prodigy villain
Damn right she would ;_;
she's still a Palpatine and if Marvel were smart, they'd turn all their Mary Sue role models into villains.
now THAT would be actual subvert expectations!
Villains cant be Mary Sues they're supposed to be OP.
Anakin is not a villain in phantom menace
I hated those movies too. I thought everybody did?
Most people hated that shit, moron. have a nice day for saving that image.
Are you forgetting that Anakin literally fell to the dark side? That he was a mass murderer?
>sequel shill strawman does not even makes sense
the entire prophies of the chosen is implied to made up and backfires clearly by wiping out almost all jedis.
sequels fans are so brainless that the defend marysue rey with the strawman about the deconstruction of the messianic stock hero
mary sue just went into the Millennium Falcon - a unique ship - repaired and flew it better than anyone ever has
there is no explaining this. even if she had super human senses she would at least need some training or introduction.
eh dont think about it. its moronic anyway.
yeah, the prequels are shit, too.
kek, you've got a point.
Also
>actually defending sequel movie characters
Yeah, I never understood why people are now liking the prequels. Even worse is that many of them think the majority of the fanbase feels the same, like we all now suddenly see how great they were. Reality check: they still kinda suck.
>now
feel free to leave whenever it suits you redditor
NTA but I'm confused by this reply.
liking the prequels didn't happen in recent history or just because of the sequels, it always had its share of fans. what happened is for the past 20 years, loudmouth morons would shut down any positive discussion of them. i used to post on the boba fett fan club back when revenge of the sith came out, and everyone pretty much agreed it was a solid film, the only debate was whether or not clones or phantom was worse, but there were plenty of bits from those two that people enjoyed. the only folk that truly hated all three were angry manchildren who were sad that they had overhyped themselves up for the movies and realized that the films were not meant for loser homosexuals like them. when tfa came out and said losers realized what a piece of shit they had been given due to their own stupidity, they had to either double down or renege their prior feelings for the pt. then you saw people start to open up about their liking of the prequels, and suddenly it was no longer a crime against humanity to dislike the films.
The majority found the prequels to be flawed and mediocre at best when they were first released? Not sure what you're trying to insinuate
Ah, so you were the minority that actually really liked the films. Nothing wrong with that, just sad you can't face reality that the majority didn't love them.
it's true that the people who really liked them are a minority. however general audiences gave them a thumbs up across the board, or liked 1, disliked 2 and then liked 3.
>zoomie doesn't know that no one liked Anakin when the prequels came out precisely because of this shit
Did you forget that baby anakin was so universally hated that the actor went schizo from the bullying?
The only good Star Wars movies are the first two don't (You) me

Luke is a Chosen One. It's an archetype that fits the story George wanted to tell. Rey is a Mary Sue because she's better than Luke, is loved by everyone, has an even more super special origin than Luke, and invalidates and replaces all of his accomplishments.
Even further, the Chosen One that was supposed to redeem his originally chosen father. Having a 3rd iteration of it is silly and redundant.
>has an even more super special origin than Luke
What is her origin? I didn't see the third one. Isn't she Palpatine's granddaughter or something somehow?
>Luke is not a Gary Stu because he was meant to be a Gary Stu! He was heckin' selected by destiny to be a Gary Stu therefore he isn't one!!
Luke doesn't fit the Gary Stu archetype at all.
being a choosen one isnt a gary stu you smelly foid
Also Luke was not "the chosen one" in the OT, all the messiah garbage is retcon from the PT
Name one thing luke did that makes him a gary stu.
Destroying the Death Star the first time he flew a spaceship
Ok so you don't know what you're talking about. Pulling off one lucky shot with a force ghost helping you does not a gary stu make.
holy cope
No one here believes he is, anyone making that assertion is LARPing
keep living in your deranged dream world, incel. Luke is absolutely a Gary Stu.
Luke was a useless, clueless gadabout for most of the first movie whose only talent was being a bit tasty with a rifle and knowing how to pilot a speeder. Most of the heavy lifting was all done by Kenobi and Han. You can frick right off.
He destroyed the biggest, most heavily guarded battle station in the universe the first time he flew a spaceship, incel.
And unlike Rey, he needed massive amounts of aid to even get in a position to do so and had to struggle all the way there and would have failed if not for the intervention of his mentor.
Meanwhile Rey is just perfect all the time and does everything better than everyone else.
>And unlike Rey, he needed massive amounts of aid to even get in a position to do so and had to struggle all the way there
LMAO he literally trained less than one day for this.
When did he train less than a day?
This is all the training you need to take down the Death Star
>mary sue: jedis are real?
>solo: yeah
>mary sue: i'mma jedi now
rey didn't even train
The death star wasn't really established to be invincible. It was clearly shown to have an Achilles heel that anyone who had the schematic could exploit.
And the morons forget that the Rebels missile was a homing Missile. The problem was the port was too small and hard to reach safely..which is why they used a targeting computer!
>That's impossible, even for a computer!
Luke used the force to time when to pull the trigger much like when he used the force to block the blaster training robots lasers.
The missiles had a homing function. The targeting computer was to be used to time when to pull the trigger.
>That's impossible, even for a computer!
That's probably not the best reference, since that character gets contradicted immediately.
Again, Red Leader makes a perfect, on-target shot and still misses, so I think we are supposed to take Wedge at his word when he says it's impossible
The targeting computer couldn't keep up which is why the force prescience allowed you to see seconds into the future would be possible.
luke didn't use prescience, he used the force in order to curve the bullet. the problem with the trench run was that it was a straight shot from the wrong angle, a torpedo can't fricking curve unless it has a fin on it and the proton torpedoes were just balls of energy. luke literally used the forced to steer it in the nick of time so that it didn't bank on the side and prematurely detonate.
Luke also has the line about nailing womp rats which though pretty weak at least sets up that he feels confident he could make a shot like that
?si=hKHLrtYJCo57de_6
Now show me where Rey practiced on the falcon.
The targeting computer wasn't fast enough, you mong! Luke used Force Prescience,.and yes, closing the blaster shade and trusting the force aided him in timing when to pull the trigger, you incorrigible ding bat!
>Luke used Force Prescience
On the very same day that he first learned that the force even existed
you know that scene was only added with the special editions, right? Was Star Wars a broken film and Luke a Mary Sue for 20 years before George "fixed" it? Frick you
And you know Luke used a one stick flying machine to chase and kill Leopard Gorilla creatures
There is no way in Hell you're gonna push aside that scene in an attempt to legitimize that disgusting horribly broken MaRey Sue sloppy character!
even without the extra biggs scene, luke's piloting abilities are mentioned prior to the battle, and luke himself chastises fake wedge about being able to bullseye a womp rat on tatooine in beggar's canyon, which is similar to the trench run. luke literally had all the necessary experience to complete the objective whereas the rest of the rebellion was a bunch of weekend warriors that read manuals. think of it like in top gun maverick when all the kids are trying to complete the course but can't get the timing right, then maverick shows them all up because he has the necessary experience in the f-14. i will fricking murder you all in your sleep.
>extended scene
chuds are desperate
Desperate you say? Luke used a stick. The falcon had 100 Dials and buttons much like a modern Airbus A30!
Say it with me, you incorrigible moron, Rey is an impossibly broken Mary Sue!!!
seriously, go back and watch TFA.
>Rey may be untrained in the force
Bingo. So she shouldn't be doing Jedi mind tricks. We're so glad you came to your senses.
Hoes mad
SEETHING chuds btfo again
The total extent of Luke's training was:
>A few hours of Official Licensed Jedi Training Remote™ exercises on the Falcon on the way to Alderaan
>A weekend jogging around a swamp with Yoda
>Six months of self-taught study and discipline
My favorite is when they say that Dagobah was in a "time dilation field" or something so they can pretend Luke was actually on Dagobah for like a year
He literally point out that he shot rats on the farm, Disney shill, that is all the training he needs
Like had his Saber for 2 years before his training with Yoda, and he didn't defeat Vader until 2 years later.
Rey went from not believing in the force to using it expertly. She is the most broken Deus Ex Machina Mary Sue I've ever seen
The reason that I was introduced to the concept of a Mary sue was because of rey
His self training lasted three years. His time with Yoda in Empire is hard to gauge exactly but why would you think he never returned to Dagobah in the year between Empire and Jedi?
>but why would you think he never returned to Dagobah in the year between Empire and Jedi?
>I will return...I promise
>We're not regrouping with the others, we're going to the Dagobah system. I have a promise to keep...to an old friend
Go ahead Disney shill, tell us, when did Luke train less than a day?
Where do people even encounter the term gadding in modern media? I only know it from 100 year old books.
It wasn't his first time, they establish he's a pilot earlier in the movie.
He had tons of help, the entire squadron was shot down except biggs and wedge, Han had to save his ass as well. Also, he wouldn't have even known about the weak point without the rebels stealing the plans in the first place, something he had nothing to do with.
He also got his ass kicked by Vader the first time they fought, Vader was just fricking with him and effortlessly fricked him up the moment he got serious.
You can keep trying to hate on Luke, but he's not a Stu.
>he's a pilot earlier in the movie.
not a space fighter pilot, he just drives around shitty crafts at his farm
He flew a T-16 Skyhopper which is a spaceship. They don't mention the ship by name in the movei but it was confirmed by Lucas later on in EU stuff.
>They don't mention the ship by name in the movie
Are you sure? There's that line about shooting womp rats in a t16?
He also mentions that flying down the Death Star trench will be "just like beggar's canyon back home" and tells Han "he's not such a bad pilot [himself]." It's clearly established he has experience flying ships.
Defeated the most powerful force user who ever lived after 2 days of training with Yoda.
Luke lost his hand over estimating his abilities.
Luke is not respected by anyone but Kenobi the whole Episode IV. Almost every character he encounters in the whole saga has the upper hand on him.
Damn, "journalists" really scrambling for hate clicks.
How is this even supposed to be used? I'm guessing the top part goes up the ass and the bottom bit vibrates on the clit even then that looks horribly uncomfortable.
>local Cinemaphile incel can't determine how a female sex toy works
pottery
Why on earth would I need to know how a female sex toy works? I'm not a woman or pretending to be one. I'm simply curious.
At this point in your life anon I wouldn't worry about it, its not going to matter for you.
Humour me. How is that used?
it goes up the pussy
the top part strokes the clit when it vibrates
Nta but it looks way too big for that. You're probably thinking of rabbit vibrators and they're not like that.
For frick's sake.
Don't thank me, just frick off.
No I think we should discuss this
holy fricking shit I thought this was Salon or something. WIRED??? You used to be able to trust Wired as a cool tech magazine. What the frick happened?
Enough about that I want to hear Jim Morrison's secret to 1000 year concrete.
CIA plant
Do prostitutes require character arcs or is the whole story supposed to just conveniently justify their sex life? Asking for the Force Ghost of Anakin Skywalker.
Yes. She always gonna be remembered as a shitty mary sue. Some shitty article can't change that. LOL
the part in tfa when she tried using a mind trick on the stormtrooper without knowing that was a thing was when i first noticed something was wrong.
Yes.
boipussing compressors is no laughing matter and is rooted in rooting.
fricking twat.
Massive Mary Sue.
It's going to be funny watching some poor barely out of college writer try to give her any flaws without being fired by Kathleen.
That sucks. We need more inspired film makers like Lucas. God almighty please bless this world with another great film
Luke is too much of a b***h to be a Mary Sue.
I still can't believe they didn't do a lightside/darkside shift between rey and kylo, felt like it was aiming for that.
Imagine being dumb enough to feel that the sequels were aiming for anything.
Let’s go over the checklist
>no intentional personality flaws that aren’t designed to make her look badass/sympathetic
Check
>instantly loved or obsessed over by almost everyone she meets, with any exceptions being irrelevant or seeing the error of their ways
Check
>black hole that drags every plot thread into her orbit, regardless of how important she is to it
Check
>improbable abilities that are never explained
Check
>complete lack of scenes that (intentionally) make her look bad
Check
She’s a Mary Sue, bro
"Gary Stu" is such a gay term. There's no reason to gender the term Mary Sue. Mary Sue is good enough for any character.
The fact that Rey white knights can’t defend her character without having to deflect to Anakin or Luke tells you all you need to know
lol, why is this tweet new. Nobody cares about Star Wars anymore
Rey is a mary sue and that isn't sexist to say because the biggest mary sue in Star Wars is male: And it's Cad Bane.
It's more that the sequels were a pile of steaming dog logs.
100%
I'm so tired of debating whether she's a Mary Sue or not since 2015, so I'll just cut to the chase and say she sucks.
Yeah it's sort of pointless to try to change people's minds, and really, nobody thinks she isn't a Mary sue, those people saying she isn't, and calling Luke a Mary sue, those are just trolls being ironic, it's dumb. She's not a good character though. Nobody would even attempt to make an unironic post about how "rey is a good character".
>le hecking racism
>le hecking sexism
She was barely a character. Mary Sues are fine if they aren’t boring. Sherlock Holmes and Conan are Mary Sue as frick but they’re engaging personalities and their stories are entertaining.
They both at feel like they earned it. Holmes is educated and conan was enslaved for a decade.
Holmes also has major character flaws, drug addiction, arrogance, general buttholery etc. which he regularly gets called out on
They're not mary sues, they're hyper competent. There is a difference.
>Is Rey a Mary Sue?
Literal definition
No, Rey isn't a Mary Sue, because that term only applies to characters in fan fiction, and Disney Wars does not unfortunately count as fan fiction unless you want start radically redefining words.
The only reason the sequel trilogy can't be considered fanfiction is because those who made it were clearly not fans.
>Disney Wars does not unfortunately count as fan fiction
It clearly IS fanfiction thoughie
If you watch and understand the structure of the films, yes.
All female characters are by definition Mary Sues:
Women are weak mentally and physically, so they evolved to be spiteful, disloyal, and manipulative. When you see one behaving outside of their genotype it is instantly jarring. This dissonance is named Mary Sue.
bitchsplaining just accentuates the point
Gosh dang it "Mary Sue" consists of
>new character being jerked off by old cast
>said character is also as good as or better than established characters
>plot revolves around them
This was "Mary Sue", by using the term for characters that are missing one if not all of the points you might as well b***h about this "red herring" character or whatever else your ape brain has on it's fringe
>11/12/23
This is some 2016 shit. Why would you write this article in 2023? Nobody cares anymore.
they gotta drum up the hype machine for the next daisy movie so it stands a chance of at least breaking even and not flopping like the last two nuwars films did
>Are the writers aware that she's a Mary sue?
well jj can't write to save his life, so i'm gonna say no he wasn't aware. i mean when rise came out he was trudging some shit along like "haha since rey is a palpatine it means she can do anything lolol xd"
- she decides to adopt the skywalker surname
i wish i was making all of this up
Wow that sounds bad but at least my man Luke was in them. I assume he was treated well and had some cool scenes, right?
oh he was in them alright. last jedi is his swan song. treated well and cool scenes, no. his entire character arc is reversed so that rey can get a leg up on him. he then dies a pointless death and only appears as a ghost in rise.
She's fricking boring. A human bowl of unseasoned oatmeal. Zero rizz.
Yes, and surprisingly, making a feminist argument against it isn't a credible retort.
Women need to go back in the fricking kitchen before they completely ruin the planet.
Imagine paying Elon a monthly fee to verify your Star Wars autism Twitter account.
she is the textbook definition of a mary sue
She was charismatic as hell is what she is.
No, she trained much more than Luke.
Why do u redditor homosexuals keep replying to this recycled horseshit
Don't know, I haven't watched that garbage.
Rey can speak fricking Ewok.
doesn't happen in the film so it's non-canon
>What the frick happened?
forcing women into stem happened
The trilogy could have been saved if they had just turned Rey into a villain. This could have been her Darth Rey origin story and set up future films but nah, they couldn't think that far ahead.
