Is Sabine a bigger Mary Sue than Rey?

>elite mandalorian warrior
>descended from mandalorian royalty, basically a space princess
>elite fighter pilot
>super genius engineer, as a young teenager created one of the empire's deadliest weapons. Only she knows how it works and how to build it, no one else in the empire is smart enough to figure it out.
>Force user, on par with Ezra who has been training as a jedi for years
>tanks wounds that would be deadly to everyone else, doesn't even need a bacta tank to heal from mortal injury.
Did I forget anything? Filoni needs someone who will tell him no.

maybe shes only scratching the surface of her power, plus she actually trained and had to hone her connection with the force before being able to wield it.
      >tanks wounds
she has Beskar armor so basically a bullet proof vest but for lasers and the health care is better post galactic civil war. But you'd know all this if you actually watched the show and paid attention.

Remember how glad all the fanboys were that "at least they're not making her a full Jedi" and that "she'll just be a force sensitive like Chirrut was" now she's canonically the "Jedi" with the least amount of midichlorians and force potential in several thousand years and she's doing force abilities like no problem. Of course the same people who praised her "not being a full Jedi" will now flip their opinion 180 degrees and tell us why it's so awesome that she's a full fledged Jedi. Filoni is a hack.

She got stabbed through the abdomen with a lightsaber. Her insides should have boiled and cauterized immediately. She wouldn't have been able to get to medical attention fast enough in that situation. They already had Reva survive from this sort of thing, so it's a bit much.

hollywood Black folk do not realize that a normal human can do one thing barely, someone talented can do one thing good, someone brillaint might do two or three separate things in their lives well and someone really blessed with genius might do more than three.

You might be into natural sciences and if you're good you might also be a talented artists. But that's where it ends. You can do sports but you won't be an athlete. There is not enough youth, not enough years in the period between 10-25 that decide what a human specializes in in his life. You might have some undiscovered talent, with most people that is quite unlikely, but still, you might also have that. Then circumstance might see you doing that instead after a period of years, that however happens at the cost of what you specalized in before.

People who play chess only play fricking chess, athletes only do sports, soldiers only fight. Rarely is someone, especially people who through innate physiological adaptability and force perform some sort of physical career, capable of breaking their conditioning. That is out of the mental into the physical, out of the physical into the mental.
We have children try many things and we as adults try new things still throughout our lives, but it is supremely unlikely that we break from the frame, the horizon of the things we consider, see and do as a part of our (unseen) perception of our own lives. What I but the sum of things I do? Little more, though it is important that we are self conscious and free, the applicability, the reality of these are lacking when we are invested in days and weeks and months and years. When we are in time.
These characters are not in time. The super hero craze in the last decade contributed severely to the image we have of fictional characters, of the characters befitting cinema, as larger than life and because of their grandiosity more than and entirely in-human.

          Anonymous

They are given traits which seem and arguably are entirely natural. How many of us were invested in art or music or some afterschool program when we were young. We tried many things, were force to try many things and go through a rather rigerous training and education comapred to any other time in human history from early childhood even. Two year olds are already forced to learn a second language, even a third language when two languages are already present in their household; not to speak of our school programs and education.
But how many of us became artists from the maybe somewhat talented doodles, how many of us became athletes from being the fastest runners in class or at the school, how many of us play concerts because we learned piano or cello or violin, how many of us write books because we had a diary, how many of us are operators because we played with sticks, how many of us founded companies because we played store, how many of us are politicians, political leaders because we were able to force a decision in our friend groups and classes, during a sports game. The average is never plain, even the subpar still plays (and tries).
          Few I would assume.

With unrestrained fiction in a medium such as a film where only play-time is limited but scope is infinite, showing a moment where a character is invested just as we were in something, is enough to establish their later talent. A doodle becomes a Van Gogh, a stick becomes a lightsaber, a temper tantrum the force and fate, a sports helmet invincible armor.
Not to speak of what these represent, what a character makes out of the things they are given, things already phenomenal, when they are not limited neither by no body nor by stress.

      >more combat experience than Shin probably
      >math/engineering prodigy; her own work was turned against Mandalore

First says no, second says yea, what we see with that football field force push also yea. At least she loses fights to Shin, then again they didn't showcase that she's formidable being a Mandolorian child soldier from birth from a civilization that made a name for themselves combating Jedi effectively without the force (e.g. Sabine knowing she's not great with the laser sword fights dirty, favoring closing the distance and forcing hand to hand & grappling as much as possible). She still has more bona fides than she-Sheev.

The Jedi being the ineffectual enforcers of a corrupt galactic government ultimately led to Mandalore being glassed (again)-- Sabine not having any misgivings about Jedi stuff and being force sensitive should be a bigger deal for her (show the internal conflict, not just Orange Hoe alluding to why she didn't continue training her). Order 66 was Jango's Revenge as much as the Sith's.

One thing you all need to remember - it was purely the invention of the EU that only a select handful can become Jedi. Lucas never claimed that in his movies.

Even in the EU, characters like

The movies introduced midichlorians as the selector for jedi. It's a good magic system that allows room for training and technique to beat natural affinity. The more you train the more use you get out of your set midichlorians. And everyone has them.

Zayne is a pretty good example to follow from a storytelling perspective. He's not even a Jedi, but literally a failed Padawan with a very weak connection to the Force. Even against Raana Tey, who is described at being rather shit as dueling and using the Force in combat, he gets manhandled. Not only that, but he's not that good at anything, really. He's got no particularly notable skills. And yet, his adventures are incredibly compelling, not despite that, but because of it.

Exactly this. She lost a fight, but the outcome was almost completely irrelevant. She had a lapse in judgement, risking the safety of the galaxy to see her friend, but Ahsoka stands by her decision and she ducks her way out of even telling Ezra period. It's no different than Rey losing her temper and blowing up a ship that didn't have Chewie on it. A completely hollow shortcoming desperately tacked on for its own sake without having any real effect on the character's development.

Sabine actually had to train before she could do anything and she failed for 7 episodes straight. Rey picked up the Force on the next day she learned of the Force's existence, successfully used a mind trick to free herself without any prior training, successfully beat the main antagonist in their first encounter with a lightsaber that she picked up for the first time in her life. There is no contest. Rey is the ultimate, dictionary definition of a Mary Sue. And nothing will ever change that. You are a disingenuous, dishonest moron. And anyone who argues that, too.

She pushed him a great distance, like 50-100ft. She could move the cup a couple episodes prior, then without any additional training she's able to grab the lightsaber while she's being strangled by a zombie, and then she force pushes Ezra like 50-100ft. She went from 0 - 100 in no time at all. It's bullshit.

I also want to say that Sabine is the prototypical Sith recruit. She doesn't listen to anyone (especially her master), doesn't train, has strong attachment to Ezra, short-tempered/anger issues, deceptive even to the ones she loves the most, and she risked the entire galaxy to save a single person. Kill Ezra and Sabine turns into a Sith. It's fricking stupid that Ahsoka would even train her at all, as Ahsoka should know better. Sabine would do ANYTHING to get what she wants. If they turn her Sith, then it all makes sense, but they won't because Filoni is fricking moronic.

Except that they knew the space whales migrated and there was the possibility they could fricking ride one to wherever they took Ezra. It's moronic by any standard unless you happen to believe that one guy you like is worth sacrificing billions.

I love how obvious that's the stunt double and not her. As soon as it cuts to her taking her mask off she loses like 15lbs of muscle and has zero definition on her arms.
The only thing I wonder though is why? Why did she need a stunt double for a scene where she's just swinging a wooden sword around at nobody? There is literally zero reason why the actress couldn't have performed that scene on her own.

It's funny because it seems like her stunt double PUT ON that muscle for the role/recently since she's not even that muscular in headshots though maybe she had a pump going before these scenes but Natasha just showed up to swing a stick once.

      >Yet ANOTHER "wear a sight-obscuring helmet" training scene.
So tired of how creatively bankrupt and gay Star Wars has become. Even if wearing a sight-obscuring helmet was actually some kind of timeless jedi training method, and not just something obi-wan did with the limited resources he had on the falcon to train Luke, they make it out as if that's the only thing Jedi ever did to train their students. They either trained with a dumb helmet on or they sat there meditating while lifting shit with their minds. Everything we saw in the OT and only that. Even though those training methods were clearly all improvised.

How fricking hard is it to think of different training methods that suit the idea of teaching proficiency in the force? Why not do something new and interesting with it instead of REMEMBER THIS?!

You don't remember this? Georgie boy cannibalised his own babies. Except they weren't his own.

The OT was a series of happy accidents and collaboration between many talented people trying to make something good out of a pastiche that would make Tarantino blush. Everything is stolen from somewhere, and that's okay. I personally don't have a problem with it based on principle like some other autistic fricking nerds. But the problem started when George got it in his head that to continue Star Wars he had to stop stealing from elsewhere and instead started regurgitating the old stuff (it rhymes) and stealing from himself.

I was a Sabine apologist too until the last episode.
The disappointment is because she had the potential to be a compelling character, but the finale was way too over the top. She's TOO powerful in the force. If they were going down the route where she discovers force sensitivity later in life, the it should've always just been something she can use in subtle ways to enhance her mandalorian combat abilities. Something that gives her an extra edge. But instead she went from 0-1000 in one episode. It's too extreme and absolute DOGSHIT. Rey was always bad but at least Sabine could've been a really good character. They ruined that.

I grew up in the 90's with Star Wars, enjoyed the prequels, grew out of all that shit real fast, always loved the memories.
This webm looks really gorgeous, like they finally figured out how to capture the physical props in very clear and smooth camerafocus.
I might have to sub to disney for a month and watch some of this stuff, are the stories good?
Just funny as a dispassionate observer to note that it took movie studios literally 50 years, basically almost a whole adult lifetime, to realize that shooting physical objects looks more interesting than CGi... This looks GREAT.

Why do many presume Sabine's training with Ahsoka had anything to do with actually using the Force? Her training was just being able to unlock the ability to use the Force. She didn't practice using the Force before her last episode's Rey feats where she's suddenly an expert.

There are absolutely ways to write a Mary Sue character well. I'm not sure this is one of them. I was a young teen when this came out, and the interesting thing about It was me and my friends identifying with the team instead of the main character. It's all so bonkers and overt that BB is generally the least interesting thing going on. Self insert is the reason why MarySue is a thing, but we didn't want to be him, we wanted to hang out with him.
I think a better (good) MartyStu is the MC from the Gate anime. The MC is perfect and kind, and everyone immediately likes him and... he barely matters. He isn't the focus, he's the mechanism to explore the isekai world and what Japanese people think about war between developed and undeveloped cultures in the aftermath of WW2.

        Anonymous

Nobody even knows what a Mary Sue is anymore. Black folk call Kyle Katarn a Mary Sue when he was one of the more complex Star Wars character arcs to exist.

          Anonymous

Kyle Katarn would absolutely be a mary sue if he was a book or movie character. He goes from 0 jedi skill to Master level without anyone training him, he just picks up a saber and becomes a god. He steals the death star plans, he's Luke's bff, he's right about everything, and he has a higher kill count than a death star etc etc etc.
But he's a videogame character and his abilities and feats are simply a vessel so the player can shoot guns and wave lightsabers around. That's how games are, only cutscenes are really canon. That's why Kyle isn't a mary sue, for the same reason Nathan Drake isn't.

          Anonymous

I think alot of what makes it feel justified with Kyle is playing through it, even though if you think about it more in real time in a show or a movie or something, it would feel totally silly. I think its similar to how people get attached to characters like gordon freeman or doomguy, it feels like your adventure too

        Anonymous

        >he barely matters. He isn't the focus, he's the mechanism to explore the isekai world
That's not a Mary Sue - they are almost Macguffin in their importance. This is a different trope, where the MC is just there to be an innocent (like the viewer/reader) so it makes sense for everything to be explained to them and why they arent part of the real heroes doing the work.
Like imagine some comedic action where a ten year old accidentally ends up with the alien version of Seal Team 6.

Mary Sue, Gary Stu, I don't even care.
The major issue with her character is the writers can't write, the directors can't direct, and the actress cannot fricking act AT ALL. It's like watching Star Trek '09 with Bruce Vilanch as Kirk instead of Chris Pine.
Ahsoka 1.01 might be the worst episode of television I've ever seen.

Sabine comes across to me as a “Jack of all trades but master of none.”

She’s a Mandalorian, but she’s no Din, much less even close to Boba Fett.

She’s a “Jedi” but she’s weaker than Ahsoka was as a Padawan.

She got bodied by Shin Hati.

She’s made some MASSIVE frick ups. It’s entirely her fault that Thrawn was able to make his return.

I don’t see a Mary Sue, and I say that as someone else who agrees that Rey is a textbook Mary Sue as others ITT have said.

There's something funny about her to me. The way she constantly fricks up but gets bailed out by deus ex machina then uses that to become overconfident and frick up again. Like how she completely undid Ezra's sacrifice or how she constantly tries to fight with the lightsaber and has to give up after 15 seconds of fighting or her genius plan to ram the ship into TIE fighters when they're on a race against the clock to board a star destroyer. She is total deadweight if not a liability but she constantly makes that face as if she's Luke Skywalker and Han Solo combined.

Imagine being Ahsoka in that scene and having to be all like "damn, Sabine Wren, you frickin' skilled, all cool with your painted armor and horrific androgynous monster face. I would totally support you, both my character and the real me." when all she really wants to do is train with another master in his world between worlds. Like seriously imagine having to be Ahsoka and not only sit in that ship while Sabine flaunts her decisions in front of you, the shoddy writing barely concealing her hypocrisy and general idiocy, and just sit there, battle after battle, hour after hour, while she bungled every plan. Not only having to tolerate her monstrous fricking visage but her haughty attitude as everyone in the crew tells her she's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, SABINE WREN CAN FORCE PUSH THAT?? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and watch her mannish fricking gremlin face contort into types of grimaces you didn't even know existed before that day. You've been training with nothing but a healthy diet of clone troopers and Jedi and later alleged traitors for your ENTIRE CAREER coming straight out of the boonies in Shili. You've never even seen anything this fricking inept before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat that's covering her lightsaber hilt as she turns it on to writhe it blindly at you, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to get paid to sit there and develop her "picturesque (for that is what she calls herself)" potential, the potential she worked so hard to achieve with Ezra and Kanan in the previous series. And then the Grand Admiral calls for another battle, and you know you could kill every single person in this camp before the night troopers could put you down, but you sit there and endure, because you're fricking Ahsoka. You're not going to lose your future jedi order over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

Sabine is annoying, and she’s the worst part of the Ahsoka show. But she’s still 10000000000000000x better than Rey Palpatine.

In addition to being a terrible character, Rey is also outright STEALING the story and destiny of 3 other iconic characters. So Rey will ALWAYS be the worst

You say that but ashoka was literally setting things up so that filonis characters end up literally stealing a story about han luke and leia and giving that exact same storyline (except replacing c'baoth with witches and the clones with zombies) to his pet characters instead.
rey stole their potential storylines. filoni is in the process of stealing their ACTUAL stories. it's honestly much more offensive, and made all the worse because filoni is an actual moron of a writer so he's assassinating thrawn in the process.

      This.

Rey is nightmarishly bad. She goes from illiterate homeless dumpster diver to lecturing Luke Fricking Skywalker about what he should or shouldn’t do in one day flat.

Imagine a homeless girl from Nevada arguing complex litigation in front of the Supreme Court a mere 5 min after being told what a “lawyer” is and winning the case. That’s Rey.

Absolutely. People b***h about Ahsoka but she was handled ok enough. Sabine was a total writer's pet.
    >strong mandalorian + legendary artist + royalty + mechanic + inventor + strong pilot + strong duelist + Jedi, is there nothing she can't do?
    >Beskar + Bacta tanks give her total plot armor that lets her block every ranged attack and survive every melee attack even if you shove a lightsaber through her ribs
    >nobody calls her out for essentially setting Thrawn up
    >she can arbitrarily become force sensitive because "she trained" despite not having any force sensitivity before, can use force telekinesis to the level even Luke couldn't in ESB
It's good that Sabine lost to Shin initially. All of the above would be hyperobvious if not for that.
Also what was the point of order 66? Why do you need holocrons to find force users? Sabine's sudden Force sensitivity proves to us you can just train someone to be Force sensitive, you don't need someone to be born with it, so why not just train normal civvies to be jedi?

      Anonymous

Order 66 kills the active Jedi, holocron records track down all the people with inherently high potential who are basically future anti-Sith ready to come off a production line
Sabine took a long time to manifest even under the direct tutelage of a Jedi, without that she'd simply have never made it at all

She should never have become a Jedi at all. She's too old, she has a temper, she has attachments, and she will risk an entire galaxy to save one person she likes. She's fricking 30 years old, dude. Ahsoka never should have trained her.

wow they gave her the helmet for the fighting and then they removed it again for the scene so the y would see the actors face because you constantly have to see the actor. and because they are so utterly lacking in any skill or foresight they saw nothing wrong with breaking physics for it.

I bet none of them ever threw themselves against something with a helmet on once, something which takes a minute MAX, to see if it's possible and spending those couple ten thousand dollars is necessary.
You know, she could've just taken off the helmet herself. It's just as stupid as shooting it off her head with cgi.

            I’m hoping you’re wrong.

But part of the problem is Disney has basically made any woman dying a “no-no” based on what I’ve seen. In the same franchise where we saw Seventh Sister decapitated by Maul.

They’re on their moronic “girl power” bender which is a problem because most of the “Rebels” crew is women so Thrawn probably won’t be allowed to kill any of them. Which means the “consequences” will be minimal, or be something I don’t even give a shit about, or worse, disastrous (I.E., they moronicly kill someone like Ezra or Boba Fett).

sabine had no power all season and most of her life (and failed to move anything with the force right up until episode 8) but now she's super duper strong and can hurl men 500 ft into the air with no effort (despite even ahsoka being barely able to slam shin into the rock fighting baylan)
if you wanna make luke comparisons it took him months of training with yoda, the greatest jedi master of their generation, to barely nudge the x wing when we tried, yet sabine just pulled it off ez no problem out of nowhere
it sucked and was dogshit writing done for spectacle (that was completely unecessary just let erza do the jump) and you should stop trying to defend it

what a terribly choreographed fight. in the first couple seconds alone it looks like it's on half-speed and it's incredibly obvious they're just aiming for each other's sword.

why the frick is it so hard for these people to have a single lightsaber fight that makes sense and looks good? I feel like I could design a better fight myself with not nearly the amount of resources Yidsney has.
I felt the same way about the sequel trilogy, in that era where there's no longer an "academy" or formal sources of training and it's all just knowledge passed down from master to student, lightsaber combat should have been more crude and brutal, complete with punches and shit. I still think the moronic "forms" of lightsaber combat didn't make sense either.

            Anonymous

Episode 8 has the worst choreography in all of Star Wars. That episode was good in comparison. Sabine spins slowly and stops swinging right past a stormtrooper's shoulder, carries through with the motion while clearly not touching the stormtrooper with her lightsaber, then they put the burn right down the middle of the guy's back. It's so fricking bad, you can watch her slow down before every instance where she's slashing someone with her lightsaber. Comically bad and everyone involved should be ashamed.

In the cartoon Aladdin is a random street rat while Sabine is already a fully fledged warrior doing things that seem Jedi like and having a Jedi as one of her mentors. It's actually amazing it took this long to show her using obvious force powers. Her using the force makes everything she's done less Mary Sueish not more. It is literally the most well written part of this mid filler series.

I'm talking about people that are around other jedi for several years and then suddenly when they pop up in a different show they are now force-sensitive. I hadn't seen it yet but my friend told me there was a cool new black lightsaber in clone wars and I thought it was the craziest shit ever. Now they just destroyed it for literally no reason and I guess it just never served any purpose whatsoever the entire time lmao. Something like thirteen or fourteen years of build up and hand-changing between major characters for it to ultimately be worthless
Yeah the Darksaber was moronic. I can't imagine why they'd break it, unless the plan is for S4 of mando to be all about fixing the stupid darksaber and in the end Bo Katan passes it down to Sabine or Din Djarin. Otherwise why hype the dark saber up for so many years only to break it unceremoniously and moronicly?

The Darksaber got destroyed? WTF. Frick Kennedy. Frick Filoni. Lucas Wars is the only real Star Wars.

Yeah I wanted it to be a brawl where Bo Katan beat up Din and left him for dead, then Boba Fett avenges Din and becomes Mandalore.

But Filoni plays it too safe and Bo Katan wasn’t allowed to lose.

Mandalorian S1 & S2 were filmed back to back. S2 was written and being filmed before S1 was even released. Anyone saying that "they hamfisted shit from bigger lore when it blew up" is a moron. S3, however, was fricked because of Gina Carano and the cancellation of the new republic show, Boba Fett undid previous 2 seasons of the show, and then it was all ogre.

        >Straight from George

Doesn't make it any less stupid. So there were 10,000 Jedi running around during the old republic? Kind of undermines the uniqueness of Jedi and Luke being literally the only hope.

Star Wars is trash and has always been trash. Even insofar as escapism goes, there are far better forms of escapism. Move on and realise you were briefly enticed to look back at something you loved as a young child by one of the most cynical, multi-faceted, well funded media operations in existence.

    >Did I forget anything? Filoni needs someone who will tell him no.

I think that was Kathleen Kennedy's influence. If you watch Rebels early on Sabine really doesn't get that much attention and Ezra is clearly the main character. But in the third season Sabine starts getting Mary Sued constantly and she goes from being girl Boba Fett to also being a genius scientist even though she's just a teenager and getting lightsaber lessons to boot. Then her story wraps up and she goes back into the background like their was a directive to push her to the front that was obeyed and then they moved on.

    >People b***hed that prequel fight choreography was too fast and cartoony
    >Reality is that the fights weren't even sped up artificially. The actors, who trained for months, were actually moving that quick
    >Majority of their swings are intended to injure or kill but people mistake the quick defense as "aiming for their saber"
    >Still knows when to not be full historical sword fighter and throw in silly but fun shit like Anakin's reverse flourish
    >Sometimes they went too silly like the infamous Obi Wan and Anakin flourishing at each other bit
    >Empire Strikes Back choreography, despite its age, is very well done for more methodical and strategic duel style, especially since one side is woefully inexperienced
    >RotJ veers a little bit into bat swinging territory near the end of the fight but for the most part it's still decent
    >Now in modern live action Star Wars media we have a mix of full on baseball bat swinging and moving at the pace of arthritis patients
    >All while having some prequel silliness of spinning except its being done so painfully slowly that it's not even plausible

      >RotJ veers a little bit into bat swinging territory near the end of the fight but for the most part it's still decent

Wasn't the whole point of the "bat swinging" part that Luke was close to losing control over his emotions which was then mirrored in his change in fighting style?

        Anonymous

Yes, but there are ways to portray rage in a fighting style that's not making the silly swings he was throwing out. Realistically Vader should've put him down for swinging like he does near the end.
But it still does a good enough job of getting the point across without being TOO stupid, something that's sorely lacking from modern SW choreography.

    1. Famous Artist known throughout the Galaxy.
    2. Trained Engineer
    3. Famous Bounty hunter and went of adventures with other bounty hunters. So much so that she is able to call up favors from other bounty hunters that owe her.
    4. Better swordsman and fighter than even Gar Saxon who is a trained Veteran of the Clone Wars
    5. Explosives expert
    6. Expert marksman
(Mandalorians only get basic training. They can't be experts in everything. Check the lore. They often specialize in certain weapons)
