It's by the numbers 70s toku for the most part with the added gimmick of it being Spiderman that's the suit. It's ok if you're into that.

Don't watch it for Leopardon though because a few episodes in the suit was lost behind the scenes and for the entire rest of the show they just use stock footage and first person perspective shots to hide the fact that it's gone.

why didn't they just make a new suit and call it an upgrade

        Anonymous

They had no budget. The street scenes were filmed guerilla-style (ie. they didn't even tell the police or passersby that they were filming there).

This was the dark ages of Toku. They didn't upgrade robots back then. Plus Leopardon was literally the very first one and inspired all Sentai robots to come.

          >This was the dark ages of Toku.
          >Kamen Rider, Kamen Rider V3, Return Of Ultraman, Iron King, Spectreman, Lion Maru and so on was a “Dark Age”
Do you mean budget wise, because it was one of the best booms for Toku in terms of shows.

I think he's referring to the period after Stronger and Leo ended.

Actually I was referring to the fact that it was very basic, and generally nobody got upgrades or new forms or robots back then and everything was very simple. That's not a bad thing though, but it was just different. Maybe Dark Ages was a bad description, but I meant like it was the oldey simple times of Toku.

          >Daitetsujin 17 had a giant robot at the same time as Spiderman that was planned to have a crossover with JAKQ
          >Toei already had made 2 shows about teens in colored uniforms piloting combining vehicles (Combattler and Voltes)
Even if you don't mention non-Toei works like Gatchaman (or not even non Japanese Thunderbirds), saying that mechs exist in Sentai only because of Spiderman is too far of a take

Because the robot was not the focus of the show's action so they just used stock footage afterwards. There are many rumors about the lack of Leopardon suit in later part of the show, either it was stolen, damaged beyond repair or the suit material made it too clunky to move and had to be scrapped for good.

I remember hearing it was because they just got lazy.
In fact I’ve heard that Leopardon & the Machine BEMs are very distractingly tacked on.

        Anonymous

Leopardon only tends to appear for a very VERY quick fight at the end of each episode. The max screen time it gets is about 2 minutes. The BEMs fair better because they’ve gotta smash shit up and face up against Supaidama in his flying car first but they still don’t get much screentime either. If you’re going in looking for mecha action you’ll be disappointed but as a Toku show it’s still a lot of fun

Wasn't Leopardon being up for just general bullshit and then when Spider-Man got bought they threw it in? Like Toei or whoever just had dudes kit bashing ideas together for toys and kids' shows.

I don’t think so. There’s concept art of it floating around and on the same page is art of the Marveller Ship as well as the Web Shooters they use, plus there’s the web design on the shield and chest that add a bit more credence to it being made for the show. No concrete evidence however, it wouldn’t surprise me if they just threw it in for shits and giggles considering how little of an impact it has in the grand scheme of things

Bro it's a robot LEOPARD on a show about SPIDER-Man. It's obviously thrown in, like reused from another show or something.

it's a sphinx, not a leopard. it's named Leopardon because of the Leopard tank and the sphinx fits perfectly thematically with being a robot created by an ancient alien race of people

One of the producers (Marvel side) was a DJ and used to sign off with the moniker GP-7, if the documentary I watched is correct.

iirc there's a fairly informative making-of that Marvel put together a few years back, had a lot of the crew discussing stuff
I think it said Leopardon was specifically designed for Supaidaaman, but was because that one sentai robot to finish the show was popular and DaiTetsujin 17
also a lot of the climbing effects that aren't clearly post production used the technique of "just don't fall, bro"

              Is Supaidaman actually worth watching?

              it's okay
it's your usual weekly melodrama with a toku hero helping out in some capacity
the gimmick of "lol it's Spider-Man" does give it some legs the show might not otherwise have

      So like early MEtal Hero?

They had no budget. The street scenes were filmed guerilla-style (ie. they didn't even tell the police or passersby that they were filming there).

Not OP but that makes me want to watch it more now.

Honestly, in the realm of 70s Toku, it’s very mediocre. It isn’t bad, but there was way too much competition in that area that was a lot better: Return of Ultraman, Kamen Rider (majority of Showa), Robot Keiji K, Iron King, Red Baron, Spectreman, etc.

The only real thing that stood out were the wall crawling sequences.

Also one thing to note is that because they used a similar design to the regular Spiderman costume the mask is thin enough that you can see his mouth moving underneath it, which is unusual for Tokusatsu

Don't get your hopes too high.
Across the Spiderverse is a collab project between Sony (movies, games) and Marvel (movies, comics). Getting Takuya involved would add Toei to the equation and Sony probably wouldn't be willing to do that right now.

Since the 2nd movie got divided in two parts, that's probably why he wasn't there
