As a little kid it feels like i went to countless birthday parties where party clowns were hired and nobody was scared of them at all. Ronald McDonalds a great example too. Idk where this "everyone is scared of clowns" phenomena came from

Are You Afraid of the Dark had like 3 scary clown episodes, I think Goosebumps had some, there was the 90s IT miniseries which might have scared some maybe, basically ever since John Wayne Gacy everything in movies/tv with a clown was considered dangerous. I remember especially in the 90s Ronald McDonald was pushed really hard as family friendly, always trying to make him look like your best friend to try to offset the "clown stigma", but the problem with that is the more friendly a clown is the more creepy the clown can turn out. I had nightmares about the Crimson Clown from Are You Afraid of the Dark as a kid, but that's not why I didn't like clowns. I was at a birthday party when I was like 6 and I saw the clown hug one of the kids at the party, kinda hidden away, (no) I realized it was the kids dad and I thought how I'd feel if my dad was a clown and I thought "that'd be embarrassing" so I've just sort of looked down on the profession ever since.
