M$ is the worst with video game adaptations. They want to have their filthy hands all over the project instead of just letting it be made properly.

That failed movie is why Halo 3's story is so shitty compared to 2, and why it mangled the characters and everything compared to where 2 was sending it. Joseph Staten went off to work on the movie and allowed non-writers at Bungie to make all the story choices, resulting in the jarring tonal shift and all those over-indulgent "epic" and "dramatic" moments and cliches

Just got into a discussion today that the VFX in District 9 were more compelling/showed greater prowess than Avatar, which also came out that year. It's way more impressive to integrate CGI into a real environment than it is to paste people into animation. Beyond that, the story in District 9 was actually innovative, and char dev was way better (which isn't hard, since it was present).

It’s so obvious that district 9 actually had a story to tell. Story in Avatar was just a pathetic excuse to show expensive cgi.

Agreed; when everyone was raving about Avatar, I just thought of it as a glorified tech demo

why was district 9 so kino but elysium and chappie were so mediocre?

Ikr I was expecting a mind blowing experience when I heard blomphkamptf was getting his very own original big budget story greenlit. TWICE. What the frick happened? What we got wa some cringey Hispanic people movie and a stupid ass robot movie.

IMO Elysium was less original of a story, and Chappie was literally "What if Die Antwoord had world-changing technology". Maybe Blomkamp thought that leaning into an easy story and better CGI given Avatar's success was the way to go?

I remember Cinemaphile loved this movie when it came out. Should’ve got a sequel.
Sharlto Copley also should’ve got some better roles after this. He’s a great actor. Funny I recently watched the remake of Oldboy and he was the only good thing about that pos movie.

I re-watched it a little under a year ago. It's holding up pretty well so far but the fact that they made it on a budget was clearer to me on a re-watch.

It's interesting how Wikus is such a callous Little Eichman with the prawn in the first act, but immediately he gets the Black Goo, he suddenly cares for the life of the prawn much more. This can seem odd at first, but when you realize that the Magical Goo is altering his DNA, it also alters his psychology toward his fellow prawn.

Agreed, I think it's actually better if that ending is left as is. I think you could do a "sequel" and perhaps "hint" at a resolution, but I feel like what I found interesting was exploring the general interactions between the prawns and humans (Wikus was great to follow, but I don't want to be spoon-fed that end)

Not quite part of the same storyline, but I liked the mock-documentary Blomkamp made that was used as the basis for D9 in that regard

District 9's setting was based on an event that felt personal to him as he experience it himself.
Other movie's setting felt like what rich people in Hollywood think the class struggle at the bottom is like.

Put yoyrselves in their shoes. Imagine being a species of aliens that accidentally crashed onto Earth. Imagine having to deal with humans, who then almost immediately enslave you into some slums and only want to befriend you to take advantage of your technology.

First of all how great this movie looks on its budget and the fact that the ship landed in Johannesburg and not generic new york or LA. You are supposed to feel the change of character that Wikus go through in the movie, first, he is just a good corporate goy that only cares about his job and wants to do good. Then when he is exposed to the black thingy his DNA changes, he becomes more like them, and more sympathetic towards the prawns as well, maybe because he has a change of character after seeing the medical experiments, or because of his experiences during that day or possibly because of the change to his DNA. Could also be after he realizes when he is the "fookin medical experiment" that he had absolutely no personal value to the company. Either way you do not have to feel "sympathetic" to the prawns to appreciate this movie, you can also see it from Wikus's perspective.

Besides the movie being well written and a good plot, I think that is one of the reasons I love it too. We would totally screw over aliens in that situation. I wonder if the reasons aliens, if they exist, don't visit is becauase we are like a bad part of town in the universe. Like any alien that ever comes here either gets shot or kidnapped, so they just avoid us as much as possible.

aliens are alien - their motives seemed to be:
          1. find habitable planet after escaping whatever situation forced them out
          2. get help from natives
          3. go back and fix situation

instead they met humanity and got coopted. it's meta commentary on what current economic systems value(short term techno gain over literal galactic domination)

This. I really appreciate the Avatar hate ITT, James Cameron is a Lucas tier disappointment as a 21st century filmmaker. Just another fat, moronic, out-of-touch zillionaire. He makes "advances" in cgi by sucking talent out of the industry. He's proud of having nothing to say artistically.

        >Give you 20 times the budget

      the only reason District 9 was good was because Peter Jackson made sure of it. You can see this in action because all of Neil's movies since then have sucked and had terrible writing.;
