Its had the exact same fanbase since day one

      Anonymous

It didn't have a fanbase because the people that loved it don't usually talk about what they read or join "fandoms", only when the tv show(that shares nothing with the source except for the basic premise and some of the characters) came out all the homosexuals, that would usually religiously join fandoms and buy merch and shit, started running their mouths. So now when someone, in my presence, mentions he likes The Boys i just smile and nod because nothing pisses people more off than taking a huge steaming dump on something they enjoy.

It's capeshit for capeshit fans who want to be self-aware about the fact that they like capeshit so they love how violent, edgy and subversive it is.

Alan Moore tried to warn us about this.

I'm not joking when I say regular capeshit like TDK and Spiderman 2 have more depth. This is literally bottom of the barrel and anyone who pretends to dislike capeshit and enjoys this is a brainlet pseud that I respect less than Pickle Rick fans.

They think video essay means a long video. There's a six hour "video essay" about the game Morrowind that's just a dry description of everything in the game. Don't know why these things are popular.

        Anonymous

because people legitimately just put them on as background noise and maybe actually watched all of 15 minutes of that 6 hours

      Those are the worst.
Watched one on "House of the Rising Sun" because I was bored, and it was basically just the wiki article for the song's history said in the most obnoxious way possible.

What do you people expect, we're at the end of history? Everything of significant cultural interest has already been assessed and catalogued. The only thing left to do is recite. If you want "new," you'll have to incite a a violent transfer of power.

Rather dramatic for people complaining about a glut of mediocre minidocumentaries.
You say that like there isn't good stuff still coming out all the time otherwise.
CnRsenal does fantastic video essays on WW1-Era firearms for example. With original research in some areas that has been very revealing as to context surrounding certain decisions or firearms developments.

          Anonymous

It's not really melodramatic at all. More descriptive than anything.
          >C&Rsenal
Interesting as that example is (I'm a fan), the subject is niche and the average person detests historical content, even with forensic/ballistics expertise. The closest anyone ever got to capturing that market was Deadliest Warrior (which I also enjoyed).

          >we're at the end of history
is that like how we were in "posthistory" after the fall of the USSR?

          Sort of, more pessimistic/fatalist.

"Video Essays" seldom ever have any semblance of essay format. As someone with a legitim learning disability who decided to go to college at 30, while it takes me a lot longer then your average person, essays really aren't rocket science. Come up with a question, support it with evidence. These videos can't even do that.

I wouldn't mind, but most of these youtubers take themselves WAAAAAY to seriously and treat their opinions as fact.

    >all the characters act moronic when convenient

This as well. The conflicts between the characters are all just very obvious setups for separating characters, or getting them to do what's convenient for the plot. The TV writing in The Boys is just too obvious.

Also, Hughie is fricking unbearable in the show. His relationship with Starlight worked in the first season, but since then it hasn't been convincing. Kimiko and Frenchie have also been given the worst B plots imaginable. Her b***hing about her powers, then conveniently wanting them again when the story needed it was just fricking cringe.

Love this show. It's proving how fragile polcels are at their core. Even the most obvious parody is taken as an assault on right-wing politics, and even when they shit on the left (the lgbtq+ food stalls for example) people act like it never happened.
The cognitive dissonance is unreal. Wake up to yourself and learn to take a joke ffs. Bunch of gravy seal Karen's.

    >You see dear viewer The Boys is not actually capeshit. It's a subtle satire of the genre that tackles poignant themes in today's society such as politics, sexuality and the ever growing rejection of scientific consensus. But on a serious note what do you think Homelander's power level is when compared to Thanos and Superman?
