Gorillaz are just a time period touchstone, their style always changes to fit the contemporary era, it's why they look and sound like that today. It's not all bad, though most of their newer songs have been sorta bad

She's canonically 32. But how she looks is entirely up to how James Hewlett wants to draw her in a piece. If he wants her to look older, he'll draw her older, if he wants her to look younger, he'll draw her younger.

They already are and have been for a while now, even Noodle's hit the wall. Making cartoon characters age in real time is a total waste of the medium.

Although the OP does look pretty bad, I think it's an unfair comparison because since Jamie posts things so often online, they're not all as high-effort as the official art he would put out back in the day. He still also does pieces that have more effort.

In general, the art has gotten less stylish and cartoony and more stiff, realistic and detailed, which is less a downgrade and more a side-grade. The real reason I don't like it though is, like another anon pointed out, they've changed the idea of "cool" with the times. In the 2000s, "cool" was more tough, grungy, punk. Nowadays it's more hip to be "quirky," garish, cutesy and kitschy. Colors went from dark and muted to bright and oversaturated. 2D and Noodle went from a punk and a spunky precocious kid to a "softboi" and a snarky bawd. That's really what I don't like, I don't think the talent or effort in most of the art has been downgraded necessarily.

And James Hewlett still knows how to draw Gorillaz in a way that blends his old and new styles. So he's literally just putting minimal effort into Gorillaz promo artworks.

I don't mind the characterization, it is inconsistent sure but this is what actual bands are like. They used to be the pinnacle of cool, now they're just washed up, grosser, and trend-chasing to remain relevant. I think you're just thinking of them like characters and not like a real life band that is also drawings, which is what they're supposed to be

        Anonymous

Fair but I think you're probably giving them more credit for being self-aware than they deserve

Part of it is nostalgia, but I do love the softer shapes and the more exaggerated proportions of Phase 1, plus all the weird imagery they used

That and the first album had a real feeling of 'throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks' in the best possible way and while I still think Demon Days is peak Gorillaz, Phase 1 felt like a really fruitful time creatively

This. It's like the more "human"(rotoscoped) Jamie draws them to look, the less relatable they became. No one even knows what these guys deal is anymore and they're little more than animated stickers for live performances now rather than an "alternitave music media experience"

This is probably just my personal bias but god damn, I'm so tired of 2D having white eyes. He looked so much better with the black eyes. My assumption is that he's drawn with white eyes to appear less scary now.

God, I used to love the story & lore of this band and now i don't give a shit like the new writers.

      Anonymous

I heard they got a writer who previously only worked on kids' books, so that's why the new writing is so bad. It's a combination of a writer who clearly only knows how to write kid-oriented fiction as well as Gorillaz now being made to pander to "people of all ages" (i.e make them as family-friendly as possible to pander to kids). I think it's also due to them borrowing way too much characterization from the Gorillaz fanbase who tend to simplify all of the character traits and generally just takes one trait from each character and just rolls with it.
I really wish Cass Browne would return to write lore again, he knew the band way better than these new writers do.
