>much more realistic bodies
>keep the super stylized heads
wow this looks like shit
Controversial Opinion
Plastic Beach was their best album
Non Controversial Opinion
Humanz is easily their worst
>Controversial Opinion
>Plastic Beach was their best album
This isn't controversial at all, what are you talking about?
Demon Days is their best.
That's a very casual opinion. Demon Dayz, Plastic Beach, and Song Machine are their objective top 3.
>song machine
>in the top 3
kys
Cope and seethe
Wait, why do 2d's legs look shorter here? They are supposed to grow longer as tines goes on. Who made this shit?
>Murdoc has joined the cabal and is going to hunt a gothic cowboy with dynamite
CRUDUX CRUO
Really makes the brain tremble.
The cartoon faces on realistic bodies ends up looking like kigurumi
it might actually look good if he redesigned the heads to be realistic as well but as is it's uncanny
SOUL VS SOULLESS
Gorillaz are just a time period touchstone, their style always changes to fit the contemporary era, it's why they look and sound like that today. It's not all bad, though most of their newer songs have been sorta bad
It should not have continued after phase 3. In an ideal world, DoYaThing would've been the last piece of media Gorillaz released.
Realest post in the thread gets ignored
Nothing more to add.
jesus frick. what happend to noodle? is she now a 80 year old grandma?
She looks weirdly old even though she's supposed to be in her 20s. Murdock's the oldest and he's barely changed at all.
Miss cute e-girl, barely able to speak english, thick as frick accent, Noodle from previous phases
>20's
Noodle is like 32 now.
She's canonically 32. But how she looks is entirely up to how James Hewlett wants to draw her in a piece. If he wants her to look older, he'll draw her older, if he wants her to look younger, he'll draw her younger.
Daily reminder that if Gorillaz don't end soon the characters will be all middle aged in a few years due to the real time aging.
>Daily reminder that if Gorillaz don't end soon the characters will be all middle aged in a few years due to the real time aging.
They already are and have been for a while now, even Noodle's hit the wall. Making cartoon characters age in real time is a total waste of the medium.
This is really stupid, they are clearly supposed to be a bunch of cool rebel youngsters going through crazy adventures.
>they are clearly supposed to be a bunch of cool rebel youngsters going through crazy adventures
Murdoc is nearly 60. Noodle is 32 and she's the youngest.
2D and Russel are already in their 40's and Murdoc is in his late 50's.
They're already old.
but the left style is so good and unique!
this is bullshit.
Did Jamie really draw that on the right? What's the source?
His Twitter. He draws the band in random outfits all the time.
Whatever happened to that weird PPG crossover they did?
Murdoc is out of jail now.
Heavily neutered because despite getting the gimmick going, they weren't allowed to do much...also just in general not a whole lot of Gorillaz lore/behind the scenes shit really happens.
Ace was planned to talk in the Tranz video which would explain why 2d is annoyed, but it cost to much to get the rights apparently.
Craig was into it but CN wasn't.
it's hardly a fair comparison when you're showing a bg panel that has been carefully adapted for lighting/perspective versus a basic that has nothing to contrast the characters with. ofc the right one is going to look shittier here lol
it still looks fine
Sometimes i think jamie just recycles. He really likes drawing 2d looking at you.
S1 looks kind of unbalanced and awkward tbh. I think they probably found the more standard face shapes worked better for comedic expression.
Oh god I hate everything about Humanz. The ultimate sellout death
The Gorillaz NFT was worse
This is Gorillaz in name only to me
damn noodle hit the wall hard
The funny thing is she didn't need too especially since the other members are all in their 40's/50's and Jamie put minimal effort into aging them (Oh wow 2d's hairline thinned a bit big woop).
Reject the flesh. Embrace cyberization.
Hope you're prepared to make a trip to the bottom of the ocean.
I didn’t buy a submarine for nothing
I pre-ordered the new art book all the way back in December and then they delayed it.
Where did it all go wrong?
Captain N season 3.
what did the N stand for?
I felt the same with the Demon Days aesthetic, but that changed with time. It's fine.
Although the OP does look pretty bad, I think it's an unfair comparison because since Jamie posts things so often online, they're not all as high-effort as the official art he would put out back in the day. He still also does pieces that have more effort.
In general, the art has gotten less stylish and cartoony and more stiff, realistic and detailed, which is less a downgrade and more a side-grade. The real reason I don't like it though is, like another anon pointed out, they've changed the idea of "cool" with the times. In the 2000s, "cool" was more tough, grungy, punk. Nowadays it's more hip to be "quirky," garish, cutesy and kitschy. Colors went from dark and muted to bright and oversaturated. 2D and Noodle went from a punk and a spunky precocious kid to a "softboi" and a snarky bawd. That's really what I don't like, I don't think the talent or effort in most of the art has been downgraded necessarily.
And James Hewlett still knows how to draw Gorillaz in a way that blends his old and new styles. So he's literally just putting minimal effort into Gorillaz promo artworks.
I don't mind the characterization, it is inconsistent sure but this is what actual bands are like. They used to be the pinnacle of cool, now they're just washed up, grosser, and trend-chasing to remain relevant. I think you're just thinking of them like characters and not like a real life band that is also drawings, which is what they're supposed to be
Fair but I think you're probably giving them more credit for being self-aware than they deserve
>they're not all as high-effort as the official art
Ah, yes... the official art. So much superior and polished.
>they're not all as high-effort as the official art he would put out back in the day
I'm pretty sure the anon was referring to the art pre-Phase 4.
for me it's The Fall, the best Gorillaz album
For me, it's Phase 1
Based
It's the most sovlful phase
Part of it is nostalgia, but I do love the softer shapes and the more exaggerated proportions of Phase 1, plus all the weird imagery they used
That and the first album had a real feeling of 'throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks' in the best possible way and while I still think Demon Days is peak Gorillaz, Phase 1 felt like a really fruitful time creatively
when i was a kid i took that exact image from the cd cover and cut each of those images out individually to put on my wall.
better times.
This. It's like the more "human"(rotoscoped) Jamie draws them to look, the less relatable they became. No one even knows what these guys deal is anymore and they're little more than animated stickers for live performances now rather than an "alternitave music media experience"
I'm still not sure who's supposed to be the original basist and who's the powerpuff girls bad guy replacement
This is probably just my personal bias but god damn, I'm so tired of 2D having white eyes. He looked so much better with the black eyes. My assumption is that he's drawn with white eyes to appear less scary now.
He was so frickable in phase 2-3, good lord.
God, I used to love the story & lore of this band and now i don't give a shit like the new writers.
I heard they got a writer who previously only worked on kids' books, so that's why the new writing is so bad. It's a combination of a writer who clearly only knows how to write kid-oriented fiction as well as Gorillaz now being made to pander to "people of all ages" (i.e make them as family-friendly as possible to pander to kids). I think it's also due to them borrowing way too much characterization from the Gorillaz fanbase who tend to simplify all of the character traits and generally just takes one trait from each character and just rolls with it.
I really wish Cass Browne would return to write lore again, he knew the band way better than these new writers do.
I MISS WHEN 2D HAD BLACK EYES AND HIS ARMS WEND ALL THE WAY DOWN TO HIS FRICKING KNEES
Studio Killers.
What the frick actually happened to theses guys?
They made a pilot for a cartoon show that was fricking AWFUL and I guess they're working on continuing that.
I want a back alley blowjob from Noodle on the right
Realistic noodz
not sure about the hairline
And here's the complete version in the Humanz artbook.
Modern Gorillaz makes me SAD.
