I can't take this movie seriously because the samurai in it refuse to use guns. It takes just one google search to find out how much feudal japan fell in love with firearms and the huge quantities of muskets they produced, more than any western nation at the time.
There was more than 250 years between the golden age of Japanese gun production and the Satsuma Rebellion. In that time period, guns were abolished in Japan after the Tokugawa Shogunate started and peace lasted for hundreds of years. The samurai of the Satsuma rebellion did use a lot of guns but they were foreign made and reintroduced after Commodore Perry's black ship shenanigans.
Hideyoshi and, later, Tokugawa enacted hardcore gun control and introduced the idea that guns aren't honourable weapons in order to disarm the samurai a few centuries before this.
