Personally? It's something "different" when it comes to the horror genre, especially with visual media. Most horror games now that aren't RE (even then that's arguable) are trying to imitate the feeling P.T. had on release. There are so many walking sim horror games on steam that it is exhausting, with little to no way to be invested. Hollywood has been shit for years with horror with some gems once every 7-8 years or so, and there is so much filth allowed on streaming services that it gets exhausting just to find something captivating. I think analog horror right now needs to just embrace the complete absurdity of "lost footage" and "existential threats". Look at the Hypnagogic Archive, that actually has some effort put into it and is having a slow buildup. Local 58 was popular because it not only had horror elements, but also some satire and dark comedy thrown in. It can work and work well.
How is it something different when it relies on cliches and trends established by other, better work? VHS horror is a dime a dozen now, as is horror with shadow people, elongated human faces/limbs, and biblical stuff. Hell, most of this shit is ripped straight from Little Nightmares 1&2 which coincidentally released in the same general timeframe. Local 58 got big because it had some interesting self-contained ideas that were enhanced by how well the creator emulated the media of that era. Mandela got big because it chased that established trend and the MatPats of YouTube latched onto it proliferating it to their underage audience.
Keyword is "now", and even then if you want to get into semantics, shadow people and bible related horror arguable goes back to the time of the Divine Comedy. The horrifying human anatomy can easily be pulled from 18-19th century painters. Even then, admitting Local 58 worked/ works shows that this kind of thing is possible. The video chronologically takes place in 2022, in a setting that's more advanced than our timeline but also significantly less in some areas like in computing, I don't think it's a stretch for graphics in that era to be like twenty year behind. It’s like they’re so insecure in their work and are afraid to actually show it. Mandela is the worst offender by far, the shadows themselves are supposed to be the scary thing. It’s like I’m being transported back the worst part of the found footage film craze where shitty directors used shaky cam to hide the movie instead of properly utilizing it. This analog shit doesn’t add shit to the horror most of the time.

Mandela as a concept I think could have worked if it went more with an "invasion of the body snatchers" tone, but kept the mystery. The fact that like we see the monster in the first video means we know what all the scares are gonna be like, which just ruins it.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the whole Biblical aspect should have been excised completely. It barely add anything to the narrative, it makes the whole thing too grand in scope without really doing anything with it, and the parts devoted to it are by far the worst in terms of presentation.
Speaking of the visual stuff for a minute, I still don't understand why current Monument Mythos gets so consistently praised here. It started with some novel ideas and presentation but starting with the finale the visuals have been just such mediocre workmanship, which was never Alex's strong suit to begin with, but the downgrade is too noticeable to ignore. I mean even the text looks off and at this point that's like 80% of his videos sadly. Not to mention the whole narrative has devolved into the laziest exposition dumps imaginable.
