Is there any movies about the Kowloon Walled City? Absurdly densely populated shithole, with basically no laws, and controlled by gangs. Seems like the perfect setting for a movie with beautiful visuals focusing on the concrete jungle.
Picrel. I mean just look at this place! Shit is crazy.

*set in the kowloon walled city
Kengan Asura has some stuff about that I guess
Some of the setpieces and areas they filmed for In The Mood For Love are pretty dense and you can imagine it's Kowloon if you pretend hard enough.
The movie Re-cycle has the ghost world as a version of the Kowloon Walled City.
>re-cycle
isn't that kind of a rip off of the Langeliers
>all that empty land
why didn’t they just build single family homes and low-density apartment complexes like normal people
It was legally uncontrolled land, nothing about it was properly developed.
ancaps vindicated
exactly! now I’m coming to your place to kill you and take all your shit then burn it all down!
what an easy ideology!
>neck yoself you fat baby
It came about mostly because of some weird land argument between the Chinese and the Brits, it was in Hong Kong but that small chunk of land was still owned by the Chinese so different rules applied.
the city was built on an old Chinese imperial fort.
the land belonged to China and was not legally governed by the British. it there for attracted a lot of Chinese mainlanders that could not live in Hong Kong legally. basically, a big complex larp
When the brits took over Hong Kong, the Chinese kept a tiny patch of land and that little patch of land turned into Kowloon Walled City. Now that the Chinese are back in control of HK they will probably end up demolishing it at some point in the near future
>they will probably end up demolishing it at some point in the near future
it was demolished in '93. It's a park now.
I probably should have watched that documentary to the end, huh? lmao
Yes some point in the near future like 1993-1994.
wait, are you the based time traveller-sama?
I spoke to you before
>they will probably end up demolishing it at some point in the near future
moron
This is the person arguing with you about your movie opinions, never forget
A picture of the very park they built where the walled city was has been posted in this thread already my man
Well someone should post it in this thread
Here anon
kys moron
It has already been demolished ages ago dumbass
It was cleared out and totally demolished in the early 90s.
>When the brits took over Hong Kong, the Chinese kept a tiny patch of land and that little patch of land turned into Kowloon Walled City. Now that the Chinese are back in control of HK they will probably end up demolishing it at some point in the near future
Based armchair knowledge anon
Unlike fat decadent westerners Chinese are not wasteful and indulgent they use land correctly and resources parsimoniously it is why China is advancing while westerners cannot even buy homes.
China is facing water shortages because instead of using the water they have judiciously they instead waste it all on a bunch of outdated rice paddies, then they go and steal water from their neighbors to make up for the loss. The average Chinese has no sense of living in harmony with nature, if one saw some rare creature the first thing they'd do is try to kill and eat it.
>Chinese are not wasteful and indulgent they use land correctly
you know that episode of family guy where they turn the house into the country of petoria?
>ywn live in peak Kowloon
Cyberpunk bros it’s so over
>Absurdly densely populated shithole, with basically no laws, and controlled by gangs
There are tons of pictures of that place and inside it was quite ok. It was just a bunch of stores with even a kindergarten, dentists, restaurants and other shit inside. The food production places were filthy but the rest was just a crammed but nice neighborhood. I would feel safer there than in Detroit or some other nigmerican city
>just a crammed but nice neighborhood
anon, raw sewage would drip through the ceilings
the electrical wiring alone was a constant lethal peril
it's AMAZING that it didn't burn down to the ground, that's probably proof that the chink gods are real after all
Dunno what you’re on about, looks perfectly sanitary
It's called SOUL.
>just a crammed but nice neighborhood
lol
lmao
Video footage can't capture the smell and the heat.
Tell us about your time there since you clearly experienced it firsthand
Just imagine.
It is also mentioned in the documentaries that the air was stuffy, and the temperature was hot.
>The food production places were filthy but
There is no "but" there. Gutter oil is a non-starter.
>I would feel safer there than in Detroit or some other nigmerican city
No one in America cares about Detroit or any of the cities. This is where you worldpoors get it twisted. All you know about America is what is sold to you via the media. American is a paradise compared to your shitholes.
Time and Tide (2000)
Did you see a tiktok about it or something?
That movie is extremely bad.
I think that closed down.
No. The second one was bad enough.
You'd be dead in a week. The government doesn't just give you money there to watch shounen anime in your room.
> The government doesn't just give you money there to watch shounen anime in your room.
Nta but yes. Yes they do
Nah I saw this video on it.
?si=f8aY-29tnV4uxs3_
The thumbnail is silly but I liked the video. It described how interconnected it all was which was cool. But before I even watched it when I saw the thumbnail I remembered hearing about the city before, and looked it up and saw picrel which brought me to the books and then I made this thread.
there is an arcade with this theme in Japan but all the machines are in disrepair.
Kino
SOVL.
Bottom left is a scene from Batman Begins.
Hell on earth
what do they breath
they don't
underrated
Ground zero for every epidemic
No, they didn't have a well funded us run biological warfare lab to make more virulent diseases.
>Ground zero for every epidemic
But thats not a US bioweaponry lab funded by CIA black budgets
I cannot imagine how sheltered and innocent you need to be to romanticise living in a place like that
Nobody cares about your opinion. The city exists in living memory, surely there are countless accounts from people who actually lived there. Your speculations are not needed
go eat diarrhoea out of a chink fetus
They should film a third The Raid there
it was demolished long ago
Bummer
yeah it seems like the perfect location for a high speed action thriller. Should do it with cgi since its gone now. Makes me thinj if escape from new york
>Should do it with cgi since its gone now
or, you know
build sets.
As far as actual movies I couldn't say, but here's a couple of interesting documentaries off youtube. The first 2 are showcases about living in Kowloon itself, whereas the last one is a dramatization of a man and his family trying to move out of Kowloon, supposedly based off a true story. I think I found at least one of these off a previous Cinemaphile Kowloon thread, so if anyone has any more please do share.
What went on in that open air middle area?
wet market/trash heap
Why do all the wet markets ITT (
,
) look to be inside rather than outside and why would you throw your trash in the middle instead of outside or burn it on the roofs?
>why not start random trash fires all over the place?
anon... it's a miracle they lasted as long as they did
>all over the place
I said on the roof, not all over the place.
>its just one big “inside”
Not the middle part that is a big open air hole right in the middle of all the inside spaces.
>now we have a cramped, unregulated, walled city where the roof is on fire
still not a great idea, anon, and it wouldn't do wonders for the air quality
The roof isn't on fire, its made of concrete and there are burn barrels burning trash up there so the smoke goes up in the air and isn't constantly coming in everyone's windows.
>its made of concrete
you sure about that, anon?
>there are burn barrels
who makes sure of that?
>the smoke goes up in the air
I'm sure the neighbours would be thrilled by that
>you sure about that, anon?
Sorry, you are right, it was made of large granite slabs that are even more fire proof than concrete.
>who makes sure of that?
The same people with all the crap all over the roof already.
>I'm sure the neighbours would be thrilled by that
It would go up and away from the neighbors while removing the trash rather than being at ground level where they can all smell the rotting trash build up indefinitely.
and yet they didnt burn it.
Burning is the primary garbage disposal method in Hong Kong since they are so low to sea level and don't have a lot of room for landfills anyway.
How does trash burning above you make for worse air quality than trash being stored just outside your window in the middle of your building complex?
... you need me to explain how fire works?
Yes, I specifically asked because I need you to explain why burning stuff on the roof and getting rid of all your trash would lead to worse air quality than hording a bunch of rotting trash in the middle of the complex indefinitely.
and yet thats what they did
makes you wonder doesn't it
I am not convinced they did since trash would be piled much higher if that was their only trash disposal method and you can't actually answer for your air quality bullshit.
>look to be inside
Because its just one big “inside”. Do you jest sir?
>why would you throw your trash in the middle instead of outside or burn it on the roofs?
laziness
If they are so lazy, why does it look empty instead of a giant pile of trash?
But there was a giant pile of trash
That pile isn't giant, it is barely ankle deep, a giant pile is something more like what you would see at a landfill where they have to dig down a tenth of a mile to fit all the trash in the giant pile.
anon that courtyard is basically a landfill
they planned for it to fill up
its not like they could get rid of it any other way, the city of hong kong did not operate garbage trucks to haul away their shit
If you read through that one anon's pictures they actually did send people inside to clear the trash and take it away, it would look much worse if they didn't.
>this courtyard filled with ankle deep trash is perfectly normal
good morning sirs
Its not perfectly normal for a landfill which easily stacks trash taller than a person, its perfectly normal for a shared living space used by third worlders as you indicated.
Good morning :*~~
Good morning third worlder who lives in a country where nobody can afford heavy machinery so they don't have landfills.
Look up Ponte tower for what a giant pile of trash looks like.
Gross, but sess garbagey than that circular apartment skyscraper in SA with the giant lightwell down the middle. Every fricker just tosses their garbage out the window into the middle.
It was so dystopic they used it in Chappie unchanged.
kek imagine being on one of the lower floors
you slowly watch the garbage pile up, probably contribute to it yourself in the beginning, then suddenly realizing that this isn't going to stop
it's going to pile up way past your window
lol
They're comfy tho
You get free food and there is no elevator
they probably wore it and made shit out of it homosexual
sex
Dredd
I would NEET here, how bout you gays?
sounds like a great place to neet with a drug addiction, occasionally just roam around drooling
I would make sure to be constantly having loud arguments with people if I lived here
Looks amazing. Wish I could just move somewhere like that and get money to live a quiet life, just walk the streets and not worry about having to kill myself because of running out of money, it would be a dream.
here's a dump
Those poor unsuspecting cats.
wahey
Why the frick would anyone choose to live like this? It's a cool setting for a horror movie but what kind of human would look at that and say yeah, that's where I want to set up shop.
If you are born there, it kind of "is what it is"
You would be surprised to know how many "it is what it is" a human can actually take.
Apparently many of them were stuck there due to citizenship issues
idk I'm not even a city slicker and I think its kind of fascinating, something I'd give a shot for if my chances of being mugged were low enough if only for a year or whatever. It sounds exotic roaming around the literal industrial complex that is like a series of hallways in an almost labyrinth leading to all the buildings you find in a city but attached, the seedy aspects would be kino af
living cramped with asians has gotta be safer than living down the street from Black folk
they are mainland Chinese drug addicts in a lawless self governed city
you would have become a meal
whitu piga
I'll take this over living next to Black folk any day of the week, but this is absolute squalor
those Asian would have slit you from end to end
feed on your corps
>Why the frick would anyone choose to live like this?
Beats living in China.
It was a libertarian utopia. People saying it's a shithole have been fed propaganda
it was like 20$ a month to live there
also they mostly drank bottled water
From what I’ve heard it was a kinda “I got nowhere else to go situation” for example doctors or dentists that couldn’t get their licenses renewed for whatever reason would set up shop there
they'd still make bank
rather live in hong kong than china even if it’s there
holy fricking kinowloon
cyberpunk edgerunners pretty much had the same setting
>you will never drink the Kowloon 7up
that vending machine probably hasn't worked in a decade
So how was the dirt swept from this store, for example, not just piling up somewhere?
Suddenly I want to know the trash infrastructure of that city.
most businesses were on the border of the city enabling outsiders to purchase stuff dirt cheap
Amazing
Absolutely kino mailman.
F
Are you this moronic all the time or just today?
=
>tfw will never have kowloon candy factory gf
Why live
tbqh I honestly doubt this was much worse than the other shitty low-rent apartments in Hong Kong and I'm willing to suspect it only has its bad reputation because redditors latching onto it as le epic cyberpunk anarchy cool liminal space shit.
it was bad because it was a lawless Chinese enclave deep inside Hong Kong.
the brits had no jurisdiction over it for a long time and they had a hands-off policy pretty much until the early 90's
Absolute kino
Add some neon and leather jackets and it's a cyberpunk mecca
And that's it for the screencaps I have from a cursory glance. The book is City of Darkness - Life in Kowloon Walled City by Ian Lambot. Should be able to get a pdf just from a google like I did. If not I can upload, many of the stories themselves are just as interesting as the pictures
Imagine how easy it was to get dicky
yikes
Legal too. It was a neutral zone with no laws.
>no guard rails
too bad the book costs like 200 dollars, wouldn't mind owning an actual physical copy
>sheep moron will pay $200 for a university book instead of getting the older last edition but wont shell out $200 something he wants that isnt for a toilet paper degree
thats it bioshock is what this reminds me of same vibe
Long arm of the Law
Movies no, but COD Black Ops had a Kowloon map and it was kino
Yeah, you drive past something like in Sleeping Dogs too. But it's not accessible on foot.
Shenmue 2 was kino, and it taking place in Aberdeen and Kowloon was a big reason why.
Didn't realize the anime series included Shenmue 2. I may watch it now.
aberdeen as in scotland? wot
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberdeen,_Hong_Kong
You know there's a Dublin in Texas, too?
i didnt but i know america has a load of uk named places like london ontario. seems out of place in asia even if britain did own hong kong until recently
I live there
>Shenmue 2 was kino
Elbow Assault > Tornado Kick
i've never seen a movie here, but the end of Shenmue 2 takes place here and it seems like a nightmare zone full of crime and destitution
Imagine the smell
>Still less violent than the average American megacity
How did they do it?
No black people
Does it have good internet?
Its harder to connect to commercial websites and log into facebook and whatnot, but there are plenty of open local shares to download whatever book, movies, music, and television at blazing fast speeds.
It doesn’t exist anymore. So I assume it doesn’t but idk. Don’t quite he on that.
Ghost in the Shell
>zoomer consensus is that kowloon is icky and gross and why would chinks even want to live there??
These mfs are so sheltered.
Where do you live that makes you so badass? Also kowloon is objectively icky and gross. 1000% more so then other 3rd world countries with how dense it was and how haphazard the sewage system was. Probably the only comparisons is some absurdly sad African country or some parts of India.
I'd humor you but you are just another zoomer with no sense of wonder that can't imagine living without the government wiping their ass.
>do you not like living in human filth and sewage? Hehe, must be because you're a ZOOMER right!
>living in human filth and sewag
Chances are you already do that.
Chasing the Dragon has Kowloon vibes.
Weird, it’s got the same title as this book about Kowloon.
This is non fiction and a must read for anyone interested in the city. A white b***h goes on a missionary expedition to Kowloon and sees unfathomable degeneracy there. She even becomes beloved by gang members.
Chasing the dragon is a common term for using opium. Kowloon was a place where you could chase the dragon very easily.
based on
>woman writes book
>becomes beloved
Wow, such non-fiction.
Asian countries stink. Even the "first-world" ones. They smell like open sewerage. I don't think Asians even notice it.
Then again I'm sure American cities do too.
Ever been to NYC or Los Angeles? Or Venice for that matter
No I'm Australian. Our cities don't drink even with abos in some of them
>I'm Australian
>Our cities don't drink
I know for a fact that's a lie.
Venice smells alright these days.
I would like to sex this lady.
time to lay off the porn, at least for a couple days, m8
>that AI art
disgusting
I dunno what this b***h is talking about. I bet she has "content creator" as her job description
her job description is "running an architecture firm"
Ok where are her building designs?
Ghost in the Shell.
Dredd
Took a tour of it once.
How fricking old are you?
>How fricking old are you?
No spring chicken that's for sure.
>Is there any movies about the Kowloon Walled City?
How about a romance manga with a dash of sci-fi?
i dont know if its been asked but what drugs were popular there? opioids seems obvious but maybe synthetic shit cooked up in the city like meth?
>urban squalor
🙁
>urban squalor, china
:OOO
It was called Dread
Stop posting this lame thread

this place looks like hell to me and i find bourdain's affected worship of sloppashit street food cringe.

Post country and skin tone
First time I'm seeing a Chinaboo thread kek. Normally people here simp for Japan.
then you haven't been here very long. kowloon threads pop up all the time
