No. It's the comic equivalent of thinking you're a badass because you look at gore threads on /gif/ (or /b/ back in the day).

Gave it a shot up to the 3rd book with the birthday clown story. It's the most edgy and vapid thing I've ever seen. To top it off the art style is garbage. Dont bother with it. There is nothing of worth about this shit series.

Wish You Were Here is somewhat interesting in a "gradually realise how quietly horrible the protagonist is as a person" kind of way

Crossed is interesting in its niche, which is a rebuke of the then typical treatment of zombies. That is, as something of a power fantasy for the audience. The Crossed are horrible, and that's kind of the point. The survivors are horrible, and that's also the point. The problem is that Garth Ennis is an edgy gore hound, and despite the Crossed being consciously sickening there's a glee in the gore that's obvious, and it's kind of off-putting given the subject matter. That said, the original run of Crossed is pretty good. The disease is scary, the antagonist is relentless (despite being somewhat comical), and the stakes are real. The main characters are boring as wallpaper, though. The point is very much to show what would actually happen in a zombie apocalypse. That is, you either die horribly or become a totally dehumanized c**t.

I agree with this. Wish You Were Here is probably the best treatment of the subject matter. It focuses far less on the gore and far more on the psychological horror among the survivors. It drops the ball occasionally (mute prostitute girl and very pointedly making Shaky's love interest a nun, mainly), but in general it's pretty good. Seems wild to me that the best example of the series is the free webcomic.

Other than that the one with Prince Harry is good. Haven't read anything Crossed in ages, because I have hard time believing anything will do it better than Wish You Were Here.

Giving total freedom to comic book legends made realize that their work was never truly that great and pushed me to read actual books

The main problem with Crossed, as with any zombie story, is that a lot of the time they don't necessarily take advantage of the situation they're in narrative-wise. Which is to say, it's a bunch of whiny shitty survivors destroying each other while the zombies watch and barely interact with them.

That being said, there are a few stories that are genuinely good. The webcomic as mentioned. The Five Bloody Fingers story off the top of my head. The stories featuring the lucid Crossed like Smokey. The Crossed 100 series is interesting given how society rebuilds itself.

I think Crossed is Ennis's lowest point, a parade of his worst tendencies unfiltered and with no heart to it whatsoever. Basically Crossed is what people unfairly accuse the good Ennis comics of being.

However to answer your question: the "100 years later" spinoff written by Alan Moore is quite interesting. It explores the ramifications of a zombie apocalypse that just keeps going and going for so long that nobody alive even remembers a time when there wasn't a zombie apocalypse going. The culture becomes fricky, language degenerates to the point that even the most learned people talk like moronic crackheads and so on.

Reading that +100 now. It's OK, but the slang Moore invented for the future people is moronic. The people themselves seem kinda stupid too, to be honest.

Yeah, 100+ is the only good thing about the entire series. Vanilla Crossed is just a ripoff of 28 Days Later but with more rape and swearing. It doesn't even make sense half the time. Initially the Crossed are smart enough to launch nukes, but they rapidly degenerate into your typical horde of gibbering morons. No different than any other zombie, except they say 'frick' and 'c**t' a lot.
Oh, and the 'Crossed' name and mark on the face is a 'clever' slight against Christianity. I bet Ennis chuckled loudly to himself when he thought of it. But does he do anything with it? No. At least 100+ does.

Is edgy for the sake of being edgy. Is only good if you like the same moronic violence like me.

yes, the stories are mostly good and revolting, there's no asspull victory for the uninfected, and Si Spurrier wrote the best entry in the series, followed by Alan Moore.

The Crossed virus is bullshit (which is kind of the point). It’s spread through skin contact and gestates instantly, making it one of the most fantastically contagious viruses ever conceived. Nothing on earth could stop something like that.

Crossed sucks pimple puss ass but the arc where the smart infected like Fleshcook are shown is interesting.

other stories tends to be the same exact shit. It’s boring as hell. That anti-crossed comic is some of the most out of date coping crap ever put in a comic, it’s the epitome of a angry Twitter rant made into a comic.

The crossed are so stupid and cannot build a society unless they are taught at a young age so they’ll die quick. They’ll die in the freezing cold and starve to death after killing everything.

christ, I had forgotten about that. and to make the anti crossed a fricking Faust reference? frick off, moron.

Alan Moore's soapboxing in +100 is getting tiresome. He's not the worst writer, but he's certainly not the best either.

It sits comfortably in the spot of my brain that says "whats the edgiest comic you can think of." I mean I haven't read the thing, but if I ever work on some edgy project about sadistic gang raping cannibals, I know where the bar is.
