It's very cheesy and le wholesome and EMOTIONAL
Didn't really land with me. It;s definitely made for general audiences and tries way too hard to make you feel things in a corny way. If you care about things like kids getting saved, the strength of family bonds, the triumph of love over evil etc. that's cool I guess but for me it all felt very forced and gross, just cloying emotionalism about underwritten characters. And you hardly even see godzilla in the whole movie!
Maybe, but when I watched the movie I was caught off guard by the wholesome story and surprised by the happy ending. I think the movie is just lucky to come out at a moment where the kind of story that appeals to humans on a most basic level is also the least common kind of story in cinema.
It seemed like a very generic Hollywood story to me, don't know what your comment is supposed to mean. It's clearly a very palatable audience-friendly heroes journey that is literally every modern movie nowadays.
Mainstream asian cinema is sappy and sentimental as hell. You just kinda have to roll with it.
> etc. that's cool I guess but for me it all felt very forced and gross, just cloying emotionalism about underwritten characters.
You sound like a huge gay. I am beyond sick of the nihilism and cynicism rampant in Hollywood filmmaking.
>And you hardly even see godzilla in the whole movie!
He is used sparingly because alone he is boring. He is shown through the eyes of people as this big destructive monster and all Godzilla scenes are top tier and punctuate each act.
Shin Godzilla was not sappy and sentimental and it had a much greater emotional resonance than this new film.
Nihilism and cynicism in Hollywood? Sorry I'm schizophrenic but I'll take your word for it, I'm sure that Top Gun 2 and Ant-Man are nihilistic masterworks on par with Cioran and Schopenhauer in your reality but can't say I see it personally lol >He is used sparingly because alone he is boring >Godzilla is boring
wtf
why even watch a godzilla movie if you think godzilla is "boring"
So your ideal godzilla movie is one where he just never shows up at all?
Sound like a fake fan at best
What is nihilistic about Top Gun then, please just explain what you mean because the idea that the industry which relies on reaching the most people possible in a majority christian religious pro-life world would every endorse anything resembling actual nihilist theory is bewildering to me. And no, libcuck corporate mandated idpol is not nihilism.
Godzilla is an allegory in these movies, stick to the legendary monsterverse if you can't understand basic storytelling
>Godzilla is an allegory in these movies
Yeah that doesn;t mean you don;t include him in your fricking movie that is called 'Godzilla'. Shin did the metaphor better and included shitloads of Godzilla action. This is a drop in both quantity and quality of godzilla allegory and you know it.
You've already exposed yourself as someone who's unable to separate nihilism from masterwork in your mind, so I don't know why I should continue to talk to you.

You really going to pretend you don;t understand a joke? hyperbole? but sure man whatever don't engage with any of the actual substance of what I'm asking you. I'm not convinced that you know what nihilism means and I think you're trying to divert

Good review. If the movie had been an anime, I wouldn't have minded. But seeing this shit in live action form felt embarrassing, especially in a theater packed with actual adults.
Sometimes people make the excuse that it's okay for monster movies to have a weak human drama.
It's not true.
It's definitely better to have both monster and a good story.
This movie gave me both.
Without having watched them all, my top 5:
Godzilla (1954)
Terror of MechaGodzilla (1975)
Godzilla: 2000 (1999)
Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla (2002)
Godzilla Minus One (2023)
It's a strong contender for the best film of the year which the competition is weak. It's a good story with characters you will like and the sparse scenes of Godzilla are effective in what they should be.
>This is a standalone movie and you don't need to have seen any of the other movies or shows in the Cinematic Universe beforehand.
This alone gives me peace of mind.
I don't know. I normally cheer for Godzilla to make more cool explosions, but in Minus One I wanted to punch him in the face and scream at him for being too mean.
I'm about to watch it I'll tell you in a few hours
Now I'm not entirely confident the showing I walked into actually has subtitles though, eh i'm sure it didn't mention once since it's just assumed
It was really good, visually the plane landing and takeoff scenes were a bit off and you could maybe nitpick other parts but it looked fine, any real issues I was too engrossed to notice. What was the budget?
It was kind of funny seeing them talk about information control being a Japanese government speciality in a movie where the Soviets are a plot point though, maybe they were trying to make an intentional point about the grass always being greener on the other side
Quite the contrary I'm not American but at the moment America is living rent free in my head for the democratic party failing to get the memo that the cold war was over and as such causing war in Ukraine.
But that doesn't change the fact that they were master censors and controllers of the spread of information, you see Japan's weakness in this area in the movie, one of the mechanics praise MC for not going through with the attack because he knew Japan was basically already defeated anyway
It is good for godzilla movie standards and for 2023 movie standards. We're comparing it to yidsney and illumination, and in that comparison, it is quite good.
>Remember that godzilla fans have obscenely low standards
I feel like your dismissal of Godzilla movies and Godzilla fans is unjustified. But I also don't like most (not all) Godzilla fans that I've interacted with online, so I guess I too can imagine that stereotype you may be creating in your mind.
I just love Godzilla movies man. I loved Minus One, great movie. The Godzilla series is overall great, but there is no doubt some stinkers in it too.
Hearing people that aren't familiar with Godzilla saying things like 'its surprising Godzilla hasn't been in Tokyo much before this' and things like that just make me wonder what movies people see when they watch Godzilla. Do people think Godzilla is only the 1954, 1998 and 2014 movies? Very confusing. I've probably been that guy for other franchises too without realizing it.
>Obscenely low standards
Part of the fun of some Godzilla movies is how silly they are, Godzilla movies cover a wide range of genres and themes. Watching Godzilla vs. Megalon with friends and family where you just marvel at the ridiculousness of it beats just about any other film experience there is. Too bad, your arrogance blinds you to something truly unique.
I thought it was kind of clever how they made the anti-Godzilla force a civilian group. It makes sense in post-war Japan and also neatly avoids political controversy.
??? Did it leave theaters in your country already? I heard some countries only had it in theaters for 3 days.

The director said he wished he had a $15m budget, so it must have been less than $15m.
Man that's a shame, seeing it today I had to go for a fairly late showing since there weren't any early ones but not being able to see it at all must suck.
It's hilarious because "oh we made this super prototype but it wasn't fielded in time before the war ended so we just kept it in storage" is an anime ass plot except it's real
It's not a complaint but it's undeniably a lil awkward to deliberately set your movie in 1945-1947 and then say "Oh, America is a little occupied elsewhere at the moment, they send their best wishes though"
Not shown or referenced. If I remember right it destroyed 1 american destroyer, then the japanese ship that was slated for destruction. Most of america’s naval forced would be fine.
1. Usa does not buy the jap legend of godzilla and chalks up the ships hitting mines instead.
2. Usa responds too late and they get btfo leading to the ginza disaster.
3. JP is a ex-military comes together to carry out their plan as shown. USA allows this.
No. Shitty kdrama with awful cgi Godzilla cameos. Fricking nu-garbage for zoomers. Also I'm not sure why this didn't get a bigger budget, the CGI looks like fricking trash compared to shin godzilla
Decide for yourself
It's the 3rd best Godzilla film of all time.
The top two are 1954 and Shin?
Of course
Yeah.
No way is Shin top 3.
I'm sorry but Minus One took Shins top 2 spot, Shin will have to live life from now on as #3
CUTE
I've only seen the first picture, didn't know there was a second.
>shin
KEK. i hope more anons will want that weebslop so we can call out all the Shit Godzilla shills
Yeah it is okay.
No
It’s a great movie
The #1 all-time best Godzilla movie is the 1998 movie, idiot morons.
It's entertaining. I don't get the hype it's getting. Acting was horrible, scenes were too melodramatic, Godzilla was kino.
It's very cheesy and le wholesome and EMOTIONAL

Godzilla is only an allegory in a minority of movies. Like, nearly every Showa and Heisei Gojira movie is a fun romp about a big lizard.
>and surprised by the happy ending.
I was hoping for something bittersweet. Having nobody of importance die soured the experience a bit for me.
Mainstream asian cinema is sappy and sentimental as hell. You just kinda have to roll with it.

>minus one
Karaoke singing belongs in Cinemaphile, dumbass.
Be nice. He's already banned from Cinemaphile for posting there
Oh. Okay.
Please go to Cinemaphile, kind sweet anon whose parents dropped him on his head causing moronation.
Sometimes people make the excuse that it's okay for monster movies to have a weak human drama.
It's not true.
It's definitely better to have both monster and a good story.

yeah
Top 5:
1:Godzilla(1998)
2:Godzilla Vs. Megalon
3: Godzilla Vs. Monster Zero
4: Mothra Vs. Godzilla
5: Godzilla: King of the Monsters
5: 1956 version
Top 5 for me
>godzilla (1954)
>ghidorah, the three headed monster
>mothra vs godzilla
>invasion of astro-monster
>godzilla against mechagodzilla
based 98 enjoyer, there are dozens of us
1. Shin
2. Biollante
3. Gojira (original)
4. 98
5. Hedorah
Without having watched them all, my top 5:
Godzilla (1954)
Terror of MechaGodzilla (1975)
Godzilla: 2000 (1999)
Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla (2002)
Godzilla Minus One (2023)
1. vs King Ghidorah
2. vs Megalon
3. vs Mechagodzilla II
4. Original (1956)
5. vs Destoroyah
9000. Final Wars
9001. Shin (made him way too OP, which sapped the fun out of it)
>Gojira
>Shin
>Astro Monster
>Terror of Mechagodzilla
>2000
1. Godzilla 54
2. Biollante
3. Astro Monster
4. Mothra Vs. Godzilla
5. Shin Godzilla
Just watched it. Pretty sure it’s propaganda to get Japanese people to marry and have children
It's a strong contender for the best film of the year which the competition is weak. It's a good story with characters you will like and the sparse scenes of Godzilla are effective in what they should be.
Best character
>CGI garbage with videogame action scenes
I knew nips have no soul, but I didn't think they were sellouts.
>This is a standalone movie and you don't need to have seen any of the other movies or shows in the Cinematic Universe beforehand.
This alone gives me peace of mind.
You would appreciate it more if you have seen the original movie though
That's not true stfu, like frick I wish I could watch Minus One with zero Godzilla knowledge. I could only imagine.
I don't know. I normally cheer for Godzilla to make more cool explosions, but in Minus One I wanted to punch him in the face and scream at him for being too mean.
Maybe this film is a little too pure to be talked about on Cinemaphile.
Too pure for most places.
>Everyone look at me! I was filtered!
godzilla movies are dogshit because, well, they are movies about godzilla
this is a war drama biopic with godzilla in it
I'm about to watch it I'll tell you in a few hours
Now I'm not entirely confident the showing I walked into actually has subtitles though, eh i'm sure it didn't mention once since it's just assumed
Just remember that "hai" means "yes" and "ohhhhhyyy" means "interesting." You should be able to figure the reat out.
>"ohhhhhyyy" means "interesting."
homie how do you misspell "eeeehhhhh?"

It's a pretty decent movie. nothing to write home about.
It's a little better than okay. Just a little.
Remember that godzilla fans have obscenely low standards for what constitutes as a good movie.
It is good for godzilla movie standards and for 2023 movie standards. We're comparing it to yidsney and illumination, and in that comparison, it is quite good.

It's a great movie
It's the first modern movie I've liked in 10 years or so
I like Godzilla, but it was also nice to watch a movie without any pozzed shit that promoted traditional values, so rare to find in this day and age.
It's too on the nose but it's a nice piece of nostalgia.
First half is 10/10 godkino, second half is too Hollywood
the fighter plane circling godzilla combined with the music was so fricking good however
?si=5kF_6uXOjHWhneRk
It looked weird how he was just able to float upright in deep water like he was standing.
Sometimes style is more important than realism.
He's using his legs to swim
There is no doubt that Shin and Minus One created a new generation of Godzilla fans.
Godzilla will continue to live for another 30 years.
It's a solid pretty good.
I thought it was kind of clever how they made the anti-Godzilla force a civilian group. It makes sense in post-war Japan and also neatly avoids political controversy.
Where do you even watch this? All the free websites ether don't have it or are a dead website.
In the cinema, I litterly just finished watching it in there it absolutely deserves the big screen
Would if it existed in the theater.
??? Did it leave theaters in your country already? I heard some countries only had it in theaters for 3 days.
The director said he wished he had a $15m budget, so it must have been less than $15m.
I think the places were it landed really well got extensions, others got stuck with it's originally planned short run
Man that's a shame, seeing it today I had to go for a fairly late showing since there weren't any early ones but not being able to see it at all must suck.
Have you tried theaters?
this thing is so cool

You can argue that a major part of US force in the pacific got fricked by godzilla at sea when it made its way to Japan.
Not shown or referenced. If I remember right it destroyed 1 american destroyer, then the japanese ship that was slated for destruction. Most of america’s naval forced would be fine.
I'm pretty sure there's a montage where he just dodges all of them on a map.
Huh, I thought that montage indicated that he fricked up every ship that tried to fight him on the map
Yeah the excuse is weird. Instead they should go:
1. Usa does not buy the jap legend of godzilla and chalks up the ships hitting mines instead.
2. Usa responds too late and they get btfo leading to the ginza disaster.
3. JP is a ex-military comes together to carry out their plan as shown. USA allows this.
The whole movie is a little flimsy. The way it just cut to Bikini Atoll for ten seconds was jarring. Really needed a rewrite or two.
> The way it just cut to Bikini Atoll for ten seconds was jarring.
They add new scenes based on test screenings. Here some people may have complained they didn’t get why Godzilla got so big between scenes.
No. Shitty kdrama with awful cgi Godzilla cameos. Fricking nu-garbage for zoomers. Also I'm not sure why this didn't get a bigger budget, the CGI looks like fricking trash compared to shin godzilla
You seething Monsterverse fans won't stop trying to pit the Japanese movies against each other, but I'm not buying it.
idk, got the slotslights?
It's a good movie. Could have used more military marches tho
