I think the only part that doesn't work are the sex jokes. Sex is only ever brought up in 40k under the most horrifying of contexts, so having unironic horny sex jokes just feels wrong.

I agree with you but there's a larger problem, the entire series is one massive sex joke. Even if they didn't strap big blinking lights on half the sex jokes the ones that don't get an explicit spotlight, it's clear that that the Star Defenders are boys who have been surgically forced to have balls.
And from the mural of Space King himself, where he's surrounded by alien pussy, we know that's going to be the punchline - that at some point the big reveal will be the Star Defenders realizing Space King was all about the poontang and that is the parallel with 40K where the Imperium gets everything the Emperor said wrong after he's gone. This is the best direction it could go and it's going to be awful because it's going to be a buildup to a sex joke that isn't funny. And let me be clear here, people are going to find it funny the same reason people found sex comedies of the 80s and 90s funny but those people are fricking moronic and as Flashgitz actually straight up said in the credits, for little boys who didn't grow up.
It's the same with the furry videos. The first few were funny but they just fricking kept hammering it until it stopped being a joke but become something almost if not malicious and hateful. Space King is going to be the same and with how the first episode went it can't go any other direction. They're going to smash the "haha they're just immature teenaged boys" button until it stops being funny and personally I didn't find the first episode funny at all except for the gag where Space King was speaking to each of them.
