It's not a copout, it's acknowledging that fiction isn't beholden to realism, and that this is especially true when other elements are explicitly unrealistic. Expecting an adventure movie to conform to the laws of physics is nothing but pedantry

The idea of having a bell shaped object trapping air under water is perfectly possible. It was how early deep divers were supplied with oxygen without needing to resurface. However, said bells were ballasted with heavy cast iron elements.
In OP's pic, while the boat could perfectly trap the air if properly forced into the water, two men wouldn't be enough to keep it down, especially when the two men natural tendency is also toward the surface.

        Anonymous

Air is lighter than water so it pushes upwards to get free from water, a human body has air in the lungs that also pushes him upwards, they would need weights on the boat to keep it down since 2 men wouldn't be able to hold it plus weights on them to keep them from also going upwards. they would run out of oxygen fast and all that weight would increase the effort making them consume the oxygen faster

  5. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

    The short answer? No.

Why not? For every 10 meters you descend into water you gain 1 atm of pressure. Humans aren’t adapted for being under high pressure, so becoming pressurized has some serious consequences. According to Boyle’s Law, there is an inverse relationship between the pressure of a gas and the volume it has. The higher the pressure, the smaller the volume. In other words, as you descend to an area of higher pressure (i.e. under water) gas compresses proportionally. This means that in the case of Jack and Will, they would have quite a small volume of air stuck under that canoe – not enough! And since they are breathing in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide, in conjunction with exerting themselves, they would quickly run out of oxygen. Buoyancy would be another factor – they would have to have huge weights attached to the canoe to keep it from bobbing to the surface. These are only a few reasons why this is impossible – think again, Captain Jack!

        >inhale gas from inside the canoe
        >exhale gas into the water

they breathe until the canoe fills with water
        wow.

        Anonymous

main problem with this is if they breathed the bubbles underwater outside of the canoe, the british would spot the bubbles at the surface. If they breathed them into the water under the canoe, it just goes back up into the air

Jack and Will were barely 10 meters underwater, the camera pans and you can clearly see the dock above them as they walk along. They only appeared to have walked for a few minutes, if that. The only thing that makes it unbelievable is the weight due to the buoyancy.

missing the point, they wouldn't have the strength to pull against the buoyancy

      Anonymous

So it's only possible if the life boat is dense enough to maintain a relative neutral buoyancy while holding an X sized air pocket. So now you just have to solve for X in the hypothetical. The problem is the air pocket is going to be too small for two people to continually take breaths to make it a distance of what looks like about half a mile.

      https://i.imgur.com/g9yNx7s.jpg

      Is this possible?

Pretty sure myth busters determined you could do it with a smaller air pocket where Johnny and Orlando would have to have themselves weighed down and be totally submerged, bobbing up into the air pocket to get a breath before coming back down to hoof it every 30 seconds or so. Might be good for a few dozen yards but not one end of Port Royal cove to the other

        Anonymous

        >The problem is the air pocket is going to be too small for two people to continually take breaths to make it a distance of what looks like about half a mile.
Oh no, that's quite doable, I forgot the exact number but the air you breath in is made of 21% oxygen and the air you breath out is like 20% oxygen at most. They could definitely last half a mile with that volume of air assuming they don't stop to smell the roses, the problem is keeping the boat underwater.

  43. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Ignoring that the boat is completely filled with air in the inside shot, if the amount of air inside was not enough to give it buoyancy, I bet they could swim under this submerged boat, rather than walk on the sea floor with relative ease.
For how long would be unclear, but you don't have to completely fill a boat with water for it to sink, I bet you could fit in a few breaths worth of air in there without it floating.
