Is this the saddest animated movie ever made? At least When the Wind Blows and Grave of the Fireflies have the bittersweet/happy ending of everyone dying together.

yes
I honestly felt bad for Giovanni, that he couldn't join campanella. What's waiting for him on Earth? his mom is about dead and his dad is implied to be a prison convict. His one friend is dead, what is there?
I get the point that the movie's lesson is that life is about struggle and giving to others, but surely, god or the creator should make exceptions. I guess it was better to let him say goodbye and have one last night with his best friend before he departed forever.
I know of this film because it heavily inspired Mawaru Penguindrum
i found out about it cuz haruomi hosono did the ost
giovanni stays to help others on earth
He literally ran to be with his one true "friend" (I say that because it almost feels like a relationship but this movie was made in the 80's) and he was locked and left behind.
>giovanni stays to help others on earth
I feel like, especially now. the world is becoming much more dark and violent, look at what's going on in Palestine, who wants to be apart of what's going on in this plane anymore? Things don't seem to have a lot of hope anymore. and people in general act pretty animalistic without any sense of compassion.
How can you help people when they don't want it or they'll just end up trying to take advantage of and hurt you?
the worlds always been fricked but a better future is possible pessimism just isnt the way to attain it
>How can you help people when they don't want it or they'll just end up trying to take advantage of and hurt you?
theres more good people than bad
I know that.
I'm going through a lot right now and movies like this help me to cope.
I wish there was an epilogue that showed giovanni dying and then reuniting with his loved one in heaven, but it wouldn't be as impactful
sincerely hope you get better anon <3
thank you
There is a "sequel" to Night on the Galactic Railroad in the sense that the same director made another movie with the stylized talking cats. It seems very, very hard to find though; I don't know if it has any easter egg connections or closure with Night on the Galactic Railroad.
If Dr Strangelove didn't already do it. the english dub should have ended with Vera Lynn.
might be location differences but i found it physically on Amazon pretty quickly also its on the web archive (tho dubbed)
also just found it on aniwave dot to if u have adblock
If everything is fricked up then it's more important than ever that good people are a part of this world. You don't have to be a super hero or a very important person to make a difference.
You seem to believe in God and that there's an afterlife, I don't believe in any of that, but I still believe that life is worth living and that you must make the world a better place. I'm completely convinced that dying won't reunite you with anyone as far as I'm concerned. All the more reason to cherish what little time you have with those you love.
Not exactly like this movie, but maybe you'll like the last unicorn
I go back and forth. I'm a staunch atheist but I want there to be some creator or some authority that gives half of a shit because the billions of people that came into this world, they came to it and left in chains. The majority of people on this world that lived in were slaves and serfs that lived every day being beaten and raped. This still happens very much in the third world. The least the majority of people deserve is some kind of peace at the end.
Sublime movie!!!
Shhhhhhh, don't tell them about Plague Dogs or Watership Down.
this was way sadder than those two movies. watership down isn't that sad, it's just gorey. Plague dogs is pretty sad, but they at least get to die at the end together.
Giovanni's life is shit and his one friend (and the movie/book treats it like its borderline gaycoded so its not just a friend but an actual relationship) that understands him is taken away. He's sent back to his life in order to do good deeds, but it still sucks.
>Gundam: After Zeta
>part of a series infamous because any of the plucky, young characters can die
>heavily references Watership Down
>a kids' film infamous because any of the plucky, young characters can die
I love Japanese humour.
homie that's anime
The only thing Cinemaphile talks about is e-girls and Naruto. Old anime stuff might as well be Cinemaphile.
Black person, 90% of Cinemaphile's catalog is just cartoon girls. Let the one without sins throw the stone.
>be me 5 years ago, no idea what "Night on the Galactic Railroad" is about
>see pic related and read movie title, caught my attention
>think it is some cool sci-fi adventure
>watch the movie
>turns out to be some metaphysical fantasy drama
Not a complain, far from it, but the shock is something I will never forget.
Whoa, I JUST got through watching this after noticing it was on Roku. Extremely slow-paced film, but it was nice.
They were talking about "Nearer My God to Thee" and I thought, oh that's the song the band maybe played on the Titanic, and then they did the bit with the ship that hit the iceberg and the human characters all drowned together. That was a nice touch. I also thought his mom was going to be dead, after the light flickered out when he was on his way to the festival in the first part of the movie, but he doesn't go back home for us to see.
This movie is Cinemaphile not Cinemaphile.
That said it's a great movie. Very surreal and somber. It's like a long dream that's always right on the edge of turning into a nightmare, but never actually does.
