Literally no one watched the original film. Daft punk carried this.
It's mostly eye candy for the Tron aesthetic. It's not nearly as mystical and revolutionary as the og for many reasons but I think it's mostly because that level of cgi and world building was becoming commonplace and that's what made the og stand out the most. Without that uniqueness tron 2 fell flat and is just eye/ear candy (great soundtrack)

The original movie was gay as frick. He light cycle computer game on amstrad, commodores and ataris was the only reason anyone remembered what is was.
Came out the same year as Conan, rambo, dark crystal, Firefox, the thing and blade runner.

On its own it is a pretty good movie, at least aesthetically.
It's basically one big Trance Opera, one big Daft Punk music video.
So if you like that sort of thing you will like Tron Legacy.
The plots pretty hollow though, barely a tangible connection to the previous movie.
It wouldn't surprise me if it was one of those things where an original screenplay for an original IP was pitched to several studios and one of them went "Oh hey, that's pretty similar to this big IP we've owned for an age but don't what to do with, so we'll dust it off and use its name as clout to market this cash in".
Had some weaknesses but goddamn what a movie. Same director for Top Gun Maverick too. He has a good sense of style and despite being entirely digital still felt more real than a Marvel movie.
