It's about the writing, references all the shows made, you just don't get them in Tom and Jerry because the references aren't overly obvious. These "references date the show" are more for things that are badly written. People have no problem watching or reading movies about the past

Hue here, no, it’s not quite the laugh (even though it certainly something we find it funny), it’s just that the dub for the classic old 40`s, 50`s and 60`s have voices and performances that we just love, that batch of different eras for Woody was rerun for decades straight across public television and cable TV, so at least 3 generations of Hues are as acquainted as it gets with Woody Woodpecker.
So, it is pretty much an osmosis of two different factors, we like Woody Woodpecker through the lenses of how we adapted with our own voice talents.

KRL is shortened for "Caralho" which is the strongest cuss word in portuguese derivative from just the word for dick or penis; I don’t believe English has a cuss word carrying the same weight, certainly not calling someone a dick or a prick, we weight "caralho" the same as Frick, even though we have the word "Porra" which is the closest thing to "Frick".

From my personal experience we just aren’t as much into furry as Americans, our porn based after classic cartoons are mostly from He-Man, Flintstones, Jetsons.

What other US cartoon characters that Brazilians like other than Woody?
Zé was famous enough to get a lengthy series of comics made here in Brazil officially licensed by Disney to publisher Abril (huge publisher back then, now it is basically dead), I had a lot of them in the nineties, but unfortunately Zé Carioca didn’t have too many animated appearances to really make a break on local TV, can’t really have a rerun of a few features all year along; meanwhile Woody Woodpecker had decades of shorts to really fill any channel’s program block for years on end.
What I loved about those Zé comics was that we had him dress like a common poor carioca from the nineties / early 2000’s did, just a guy with a white shirt and jeans shorts, not like the dandy from 1940, but in certain issues Zé wore his classic outfit for recognition, can’t have him wear modern stuff all the time so people forget who he is and thinks it is some original green bird character.
Weird trivia, Stanley Kubrick was a huge fan of Woody Woodpecker and asked the creator, Walter Lantz, if he could hide Woody Woodpecker in all his movies as an Easter egg. Lantz said no. He later said he regretted the decision after watching 2001: A Space Odyssey, but felt relieved after watching A Clockwork Orange and The Shining.
