Pairing Zuko with a female character who he shares some scenes with both of whom already have an established love interest? I guess?
Though I will say the Zuko and Suki scenes were kind of out of nowhere and did make me wonder if the writer saw an opportunity to push his rarepair or something.
exactly so that Sokka can get together with Toph instead. Those two absolutely deserved each other and Sokka would've been an immeasurably better father than whoever Toph had children with
I've always personally considered that the comics and Korra change/retcon so much previously established lore that it might just be an alternative universe or some shit like that.
What about Korra changed the lore? All the avatars all giving the same advice to Aang makes sense if they are all just the same entity that share a body with the previous avatars. In fact it makes way more sense then everyone of them but Aang agreeing he needs to kill the Fire Lord.
not when you're just doing it to piss them offf/make them jealous and plan on getting back with them. She was just using the guy it's why she immediately dumped him at the end.
I feel like it's mostly the case that they don't have interesting contrasts between them.Putting the emo dude with the goth chick isn't exactly going to light the screen on fire with couples hijinks.
Honestly, Ty Lee would have been a more interesting fit, if only for pulling Zuko out of his comfort zone.
The most interesting perspective about Mai I've seen is the idea that she's a thrillbawd and that she would probably get wet being Zuko's double agent inside the Fire Palace.
This. Even in the SHOW ITSELF Mai and Zuko aren't a lot of fun. The one "date" they go on has some very painful writing.
They're just not a good match in terms of good content. The broody, angsty guy and the broody, angsty girl together don't generate a lot of interesting moments since they're both just doubling up on the gloom.
This is why it's much more fun to pair them with brighter, sunnier characters that get them out of their comfort zones. BOTH of them. It's why I like Maang so much. Can you imagine Mai and Aang as a couple? He'd drive her crazy, it would be awesome.
not that anon but it's just good shit. classic bright and sunny x doomer. there's not a ton of content sadly, but there's some good stuff
check out 'traitor's face' if you want an epic length well-written fic with it as the main pair. basically aang waking up in a world where the fire nation has already won, and mai winds up being the first person he sees (because her family has been given governorship of the south pole)

After all, what's the ultimate goal of a gloomy goth girl as a character? To make her smile. To make her laugh. To fill her with sunshine, just for a little bit.
So I like the idea that Aang can make Mai smile and laugh, that he's some unexpected sunshine in her gloomy goth world. And Mai is initially annoyed by this, but eventually comes to enjoy the fact that Aang, and only Aang, can make her smile. So she grows very protective of him, and loving towards him. This, in turn, helps Aang, because Mai's more realistic and practical than him, so she can help him navigate the parts of the world that aren't so sunny and bright.
They complete each other, basically, the way good couples should.
I wish the fic that that art was done for had kept going, "So It Goes". The fic that got me into it was "Forgiveness" which, as an adult, is pretty fricking cheesy melodrama, but it's still got some decent parts.
And yeah, you basically get it. It's such a good fricking dynamic. I wanna see him whisk her away and show her how great the world can be, goddamn.
Azulaang is my second favorite, it has some stellar fics. But sadly way too much of the fandom is wrapped around Zuko. Aang gets no respect

Aang is well written but he is a little basic. Basic isn't bad but it does lack a certain kind of novelty. Zuko experienced tremendous character development and he's a big reason why redemption arcs are such a big thing nowadays. He also has that kind of "bad boy I can fix" thing with him too
I like to think Mai would've gotten along surprisingly well if she joined the Gaang after the Boiling Rock. I guess there wasn't enough screentime to add another character to the cast, especially one who'd take up too much of Zuko's attention.
Someone said it better than I, but Mai isn't too many steps away from being like Toph. Suppressed aristocrat, initially averse to getting too mushy or vulnerable, abrasive, definitely has a strong streak for rebellion and amusement.

Always thought Mai might look better with her hair down, same for Ty-Lee
Ty Lee's braid works for her. It works for her personality, the way that she moves, and her bright circus persona.
Mai's weird haircut with the meatball-head buns and the bob and the like rattails--is unflattering. It was like an unholy fusion of Sailor Moon and Queen Amidala. The style is too high-effort for Mai while also not expressing anything at all. Come to think of it, hair is a major design element for all the main characters, and Mai is the only one whose style doesn't suit or further her characterization.
I think Mai was shown with her hair down when she was taking off her make-up during her time undercover as a Kyoshi Warrior, and she looked so much better.
I can easily imagine Mai having a blast with Aang and Toph. I have the impression she would be good with young kids too. I don't really have anything that outright indicates that aside from her friendship with Ty Lee but I think it would be a cute aspect of her character.
June strikes me as the hardcore kind of girl that does anal with no lube or likes being tied up with her own whip rather than payment in gold if you're hung enough
Iroh is wise enough to know that for casual sex, an experienced and uninfected partner is better than someone who doesn't know what they're doing or what they want.

Always thought Mai might look better with her hair down, same for Ty-Lee
I like Mai. Like, I don't love her but I kinda dig her. She's a gloomy non bender that's good with knives and that's fine. I actually think she's pretty and I find her general look cool. I think the reason why people tend to dislike is that she's primarily a satellite character for Zuko and many people think (and perhaps rightfully so.) that their dynamic is boring and badly written. What also doesn't help is that they didn't really spend a lot of time together. If Zuko was say, with Ty Lee instead, I think people would jive with it more.
>t's literally just Yang self-inserting as Zuko and pushing a ship with his waifu,
Don't care it was easily the best ship in ATLA which isn't a high bar but still
Think she went by the name of caiman2 or emmabrave.
She's stopped doing shit for a year now apparently getting a job in the animation industry despite drawing the same body type for literally every woman like anon here said
Oh boy, another "I'll draw a giant mutant thigh blob with beach ball breasts and slap a character's face on it" artist. Terrific.
The show made the canon pairings pretty clear. If you think that Zuko and Mai don't get together despite dubiously canon comic drama, you're not paying attention.
The whole appeal of Zutara is simply not wanting Katara together with Aang, because Aang is younger and shorter than Katara. That's it. It's all about cucking Aang.
Does anyone not understand the confusion about adult Toph being a prostitute?
I've seen person after person on here claim Toph would never be like that, that it ruined her character. But that's baffling to me. Toph growing up to be a turbobawd is one of the only things about Korra I liked. It makes perfect sense and is entirely in-character for Toph. She literally left a sheltered, uptight upbringing with her rich parents and became a free-spirited hobo. You telling me a girl like that WOULDN'T take every dick that crossed her path?

still bothers me that we don't know what happened to either of Toph's baby daddies. Were they both just one night stands or were there messy divorces or death?
It's shitty for a parent not to be involved in his child's life. Toph does have a lovable selfish streak, but it's depressing to think of her as someone who went through a good deal of development and still is so extremely careless about creating new human beings, that she'd make two kids with the type of men who didn't even parent at all. She's not a ditz, so the impression is that she just didn't give a shit, and then continued not giving a shit.
Breaking up with her men and seriously butting heads with her daughters makes sense, just like Aang focusing slightly more on his airbender child to the point his other kids feel a bit sidelined. But Toph did have several moments of learning to be more considerate and responsible, so her future as a crappy single mom is disappointing.
There is giving flaws and complexity to characters, but TLOK seems to go out of its way to make the heroes to cross the line into being unlikeable buttholes who screw up so badly that their kids are still having adolescent angst in their middle age.
I think Ozai does what the story needs him to do pretty well. He's more of a way to show some of the themes and acts like a general personification of the Fire Nation so as a tool, he works well. Him having actual depth may actually detract from that, but if was going to make him more fleshed out, how would one do so?
Its better.
This they have actual chemistry and Suki is just way more likable than Katara
not a high bar
No, Korra x Mako is Zutara repackaged. But shit.
True
You repeat yourself.
Pairing Zuko with a female character who he shares some scenes with both of whom already have an established love interest? I guess?
Though I will say the Zuko and Suki scenes were kind of out of nowhere and did make me wonder if the writer saw an opportunity to push his rarepair or something.
Zuki is the first and only time I’ll ever support NTR.
exactly so that Sokka can get together with Toph instead. Those two absolutely deserved each other and Sokka would've been an immeasurably better father than whoever Toph had children with
except he definitely did and his daughter was by far the worse daughter of Toph's two
No. The comics aren’t canon. Only the show is. Anyone who thinks the comics are canon to the show is an idiot.
I've always personally considered that the comics and Korra change/retcon so much previously established lore that it might just be an alternative universe or some shit like that.

What?
It's NTR. Sokka watches while the Fire Lord fricks his wife.
Why are people desperate to ship Zuko with everyone but Mai? I heard people say she's ugly, but c'mon she's not hideous or anything.
Zutara shippers are still coping after all these years.
I don't think Mai is ugly. I do think she's boring as plain toast and is lame compared to basically any other woman adjacent to Zuko.
The comics also made her insufferable and petty as all hell.
>The comics also made her insufferable and petty as all hell.
So the writer for How I Became Yours got a job doing Avatar comics?
She cheats on Zuko and actively commits treason by hiding her Father's involvement in a coup plot.
>b***h best believe its hammertime
Weren’t they broken up before she got a new bf
anon, if you break up with your gf and then go on to date other people then it's moving on, not cheating
not when you're just doing it to piss them offf/make them jealous and plan on getting back with them. She was just using the guy it's why she immediately dumped him at the end.
no landboats
It's that she's ugly on the inside
Well, the only two girls she used to hang around with were 'above her level' though I am pretty sure in-universe Mai is "better" than Azula
Nobody is better than Azula, anon.
True, but I meant as in more popular at least based from the beach episode
I feel like it's mostly the case that they don't have interesting contrasts between them.Putting the emo dude with the goth chick isn't exactly going to light the screen on fire with couples hijinks.

god bless the SS Maiaang. Who needs screentime when you have such an obviously perfect dynamic? thanks for posting my commission anon
I thought this thread would be stupid but you've intrigued me with your ship I have never seen before. Tell me more, anon.
not that anon but it's just good shit. classic bright and sunny x doomer. there's not a ton of content sadly, but there's some good stuff

All of Loopy's other shit is great too. Retroactive, Trapped in Ba Sing Se, all great.
Sold. I'll check the fic out sometime this week.

Yeah and it could go either way too.
anon pls
I'm just saying if ya know ya know.
It's not that, i am asking you to stop being a homosexual
Can't stop won't stop don't even know how to stop.
unironically made for Iroh
who knows if his old man sperm is still potent, there's a minute chance he could still have a child with June
I'm sure June has fricked her way across the Earth Kingdom, Iroh might not want that used up womb.
Iroh is wise enough to know that for casual sex, an experienced and uninfected partner is better than someone who doesn't know what they're doing or what they want.
She might have siphilis
I ship Zuko with Mai, it's just that Mai is also a cuck.
Always thought Mai might look better with her hair down, same for Ty-Lee
Cause Maiko sucks and Mai as a character sucks.
Zuko also the character that could be pair with anyone and could work with a enough thought.
>Zuko also the character that could be pair with anyone
Not Azula
I like Mai. Like, I don't love her but I kinda dig her. She's a gloomy non bender that's good with knives and that's fine. I actually think she's pretty and I find her general look cool. What is NTR?
japanese for cuckoldry
Zuki is actually a beautiful idea though
It's literally just Yang self-inserting as Zuko and pushing a ship with his waifu, that's it.
>t's literally just Yang self-inserting as Zuko and pushing a ship with his waifu,
Don't care it was easily the best ship in ATLA which isn't a high bar but still
only daily intercourse with all 10 of Ty lee's sisters will heal Zuko's wounded soul.
no landboats
Of course not. Suki isn't massive naggabutch. Well, she kinda is but she keeps it to herself mostly.

Good GOD that Katara is thicker than a brick house
Yes she is

Reminder that the comics aren't canon and neither is Korra.

People should be reminded of this even more often.
I feel like suki is still gonna end up with sokka, regardless

Sokka is almost assuredly Suyin's father.
