      You know-
Out of boredom and curiosity I once took some story and the characters fricking nobody knew about and just genderswapped everyone.

Everything intact, same dialogue, same outfits, same jobs and characterization- everything was left 1:1 except dudes were girls and the male characters were now women.
Know what? People went apeshit for the “now are all women” genderswapped male characters.

People simply hadn’t seen women act like that, do things like that. Suddenly, it was “hot”, and “I want to see more of this”. The female characters were suddenly that- CHARACTERS.
With diverse looks and personality and flaws.
I didn’t change a goddamn thing besides the gender here.

It’s like the first filming of the first “Alien” movie, everything left entirely as is, but just cast a woman as the main character in the script.
It’s madness, it boggles the fricking mind.

Literally all you have to do is take any goddamn story and just gender swap it- and people go apeshit over it.

I can’t fricking fathom it. It’s just so- it’s a self made joke.

My dude, the point is in fiction- people don’t even fricking TRY.
If you can have Eowyn cut off fricking Angmar’s head, surely you can write at least a modicum of something decent.

Y’all jackasses can accept laser powers and time travel and dragons but balk like fricking brain dead cowards over the idea of decent writing. It’s unthinkable to you, even.
I mean just look at this comment.
He’s such a brain dead piece of unbridled shit he just willfully ignores the entire point.
He’s not even fricking trying, he’s just reaching around so far up his own ass for a point that he’s passed his own teeth twice now.
God it’s frustrating, how do you get by being such a fricking lose in day to day life? Do you have to practice or does being a fricking waste in the eyes of your parents just come naturally?
Let’s hope you’re at least gay because the only initiate touch in your life is going to be when your family lowers you into the ground after the unbearable weight of being you finally drives your miserable ass to, thereby finally giving the world at least a tiny glimmer of hope.

there are female characters that ended up more well written despite the author not even trying, than the attempted "strong and compelling women" that western authors put full effort into writing.

I guess people just like women characters.
There's also the fact that women get written in such a narrow or restricted fashion that just writing them as normal people can seem "refreshing". Just having a female go out and do things is so unusual for some people, since they've been told or shown that women are typically passive or otherwise not main character material.

It's less surprising to me, but I've seen enough female protagonists and have read enough foreign media to not be too surprised. You'll find more female protagonists in more varied roles in French media, for one.

There's also Droners, for cute brown waifu with a focus as main character.
The Grémillet Sisters is a pretty good Italian series of comics with a trio of sisters as the main characters. Pretty good one as well.

Those are the top picks that come to mind. Nävis is just immediately what I thought when I saw the post, since "runs around the forest nearly naked and taking on monsters with a slingshot" is pretty much what you'd expect from a young boy protagonist, not something you'd typically see from writing for women characters.

Take Ripley from Alien, "she" was written as a man and then given a female sex basically at random. Nothing about the character was written to account for her being a woman, nothing about her is feminine. Any references an audience might make the pregnancy metaphors or the like are nonsense, they weren't a consideration at all for the writers.
Almost every woman character that is widely loved is either jerk off bait, or written like a man and then slapped with the 'female' tag at the end.

My artistic works involve wildly different male characters.
Unfortunate for this complaint they are supposed to relate to the female characters of others. I was in the same internet communities as Rebecca Sugar, like this board and John K's blog. Lots of my male characters are Cosmic monsters who live on Rings, they are supposed to relate to Rebecca Sugar's alien Gem characters, but the animation Community intentionally destroyed our relationship as John K students.

The artist behind this complaint would know something about this because I was drawing like MLP Friendship is Magic before the series was released. I had even connected with Lauren Faust.

        Paperman, a Disney short

        https://i.imgur.com/uRRM79f.png

It actually drives me crazy how often in cartoons men get to be all these cool, funky shapes with loads of personality, but women characters in the same source are drawn as what the designer views as frickable. Safe. Curvy and down for whatever the man needs..

I wish people who perpetuated this trope knew how dehumanising this feels

Try watching something that isn't titilation-focused. While some artists do definitely have a body type and stick with it, the stories which focus more on character interactions tend to not have every woman the same busty hourglass figure. If /misc/ and twitter are whining about it going "woke" then chances are you have varied body types of both sexes.

You know how videogames now are trying to force players to think man jawed, frumpy women are attractive (cause the women working on these games look like that ). Animation did it first, as these productions are full of big nosed, awkward, mop topped haired, sensitive soft bois.

To be fair ugly male characters are acceptable if done well, but genuinely ugly chick will just hurt the show. Question is if it makes sense to combat it, because double standards are a thing on instinctual and biological level.

To me, it got a theory that they try but exaggerating women body would be harder to get past the radar. Imagine a female equivalent of the fat guy and the huge broad shouldered chiseled buff guy.
Huge rump and boobas, thighs. Things thatd get caught in the 'No Fun' net.

The closest I've come to finding an ugly woman in fiction that I liked was Melody from HunterXHunter. And honestly, it took a while for me to warm up to her.
After that, she completely won me over. But that's because she's a genuine example of a well written earnest character. It's hard to even think of her appearance as a flaw because she's handled in a way that it's not even worth bringing up.

See, the problem with "women should have more cartoony bodies" is that although a good idea, it doesn't come from a place of honesty.

Should women in cartoons be ALLOWED to be more cartoony? Of course.

But the people saying "make the female characters more cartoony" aren't saying it out of "treat women equal to men in this regard, don't reduce us to objects", they're saying it out of envy more than anything. It's why most of the artists who "fix" designs of these female characters end up making everyone look frumpy/ugly and lack style because they haven't matured past being a teenager and get pissy at the idea of someone more attractive than them existing.

      Anonymous

And beyond that, women in cartoons aren't really allowed to BE cartoony for multiple reasons beyond "durr men are horndogs"

      >female characters are RARELY allowed to be drawn cartoony because being cartoony implies that they're going to be much more expressive/exaggerated, something that girls and young women tend to see as turn-offs
      >although it's not Cinemaphile, the people behind Konosuba had to fight the execs to make the girls more outrageous because the higher ups were concerned it would diminish their "cute" factor if they didn't have the same cutesy face and actions all the time (like you see in most anime these days)

      >expanding on this, cartoony/exaggerated designs usually go hand in hand with slapstick violence, something that audiences aren't comfortable with: it's fine to see Donald Duck get beat up or squished but parents get upset when Daisy gets the same treatment

      >lastly, it comes down to familiarity: girls tend to be more weirded out by female characters who look goofy, they prefer female characters who have neotenous/feminine features (hence why most women in cartoons have a "doll" face)

  50. 4 months ago

Shitty bait but yes female characters more closely fall into was is attractive by human standards because they are more often valued for their appearance and also women like being hot more than men. There are multiple factors here.

  51. 4 months ago
    Anonymous

one reason why we dont get many different types of women is from the majority of women themselves who will b***h endlessly about whatever you do when it comes to art. Make them too hot? NOOOO UNREALISTIC BODY STANDARD even though its been shown that women would love to look like that. Realistic body standard? NOOO YOUR NOT DOING IT RIGHT, on and on you cant fricking win. Just draw whatever the frick you want/make whatever character you want and if people b***h just tell them to make there own OC with black jack and hookers. If they try to correct your art you have full permission to correct there icon and call them a homosexual.
