No, I meant people being glib about venom spidey and calling it emo, was fricking stupid. Everyone was just surrendering to peer pressure and mumbling about emo spidey when asked why they didn't like it.

Sam Raimi made a mistake when he assumed capeshit fans have an actual sense of humor. you morons all thought "emo spiderman" was meant to be taken seriously even when he did a dance routine.

It's unironically the best part. Tobey must've had fun doing those scenes.

Yep. It was genuine fun and more engaging than the endless quips that we get nowadays. The Raimi films knew when to be silly and when to be serious, and they do both well. Quipslop is impossible to take seriously because every single line of dialogue or moment that could possibly hold tension or emotion is sullied by some unfunny zinger written by a balding, estrogenised millennial or braindead zoomer.

The main issue with it is just the pacing because they are juggling three fricking villains, everything else is genuinely fine and relatively good.

      Anonymous

The 3 of them are more developed than Carnage, Mysterio, the clusterfrick soulless cameo that was the last movie, evil Venom from Venom 1, etc.
If we expand to the MCU, other than Thanos (and maybe Loki if they didnt reset his progress every movie) are shallower, like way shallower than Sandman, venom and Harry.

  4. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

The ending with Peter forgiving Sandman was absolute kino and you won't see something like that again from the irony soaked culture. Just compare Starlord psychotically killing that one dude in the third film to how Spiderman dealt with the man who killed his uncle. Way more humanity in that film than the entirety of the MCU combined.

      Anonymous

on its own the scene is nonsense but as a finishing touch to how aunt may influenced him during spiderman 2 and a bit of how she doesnt hold vengeance in her heart for uncle bens killer during 3 it was really nice. if the entire movie was about forgiveness vs retribution it would have been the perfect scene to wrap up the movie

It’s shit mate. Venom was awful and no one cares about sandman.
The only good bit is where spidey chucks the bomb in Harry’s face and when the old butlers says “The blade that killed your father came from his own glider”. I quote that all the time.

Compared to anything with Garfield, Tom Holland or that animated shit it is like a goddamn Hitchwiener classic. It's just the weakest of a good trilogy is all. It can't compare to the more focused singular villains of Green Goblin or Doc Oc, there is too much shit going on.

But I still enjoyed it mightily and will rewatch it 1000 times over before I go near any MCU/post MCU capeslop.

He's alright as "Evil Peter Parker", which is what Raimi was really going for, but he's not a great Eddie Brock/Venom. At least not a "comic accurate" one.

It isn't bad but not even close to the first two movies and does a poor job of continuing thematically where 2 left the characters.

How? Evil Peter gets tired of Harry whining and humiliates him and maims his face.
But when Peter is fighting Venom and Sandman he doesnt go to help him because Peter was exonerated by a deus ex machina, he goes still believing Peter killed his father. And why does he go after all of that? Because it was his responsibility.
Harry and Venom tie the themes of the whole trilogy. Venom is Peter Parker without responsibility (literally asking God to kill him). Harry falls but at the end does what he does out of his own sense of responsibility. Impeccable ending to the whole trilogy.

Oh you didnt watch the editor cut. Sorry bro.

        Anonymous

        >Oh you didnt watch the editor cut. Sorry bro.
That's novel but it doesn't really matter because it doesn't conceptually change anything.
Harry's arc is both rushed and put too far in the background. Coming off of Spider-Man 2, it feels like they just wanted to back out of the idea. He's so much less compelling than in the first two movies, 1 especially.
And Peter and MJ's problems just aren't handled in a way that feels fine because all their biggest issues are artificially fabricated. Ironically, the only part that fits is the very last scene but it's too thin and comes after a story that didn't earn it.
Peter having the symbiote is a very cheap, lazy concept.

          Anonymous

          >Peter having the symbiote is a very cheap, lazy concept.
Yes, but enough about the Secret Wars comic book retcons, we are talking about a self contained trilogy of movies that actually made sense.

            Anonymous

I am. Having an external plot device that makes a character more evil just because is lazy. Compare symbiote Peter to Harry in the Thanksgiving scene from Spider-Man 1 as an example; there's a huge IQ difference between those approaches to character writing. I typed the earlier comment while completely forgetting Peter and MJ's drama in the first half of the movie that more or less ends at the dinner scene with Bruce Campbell. Then the black suit comes on and all that goes out the window. The real Peter being self-centered because he's high on life doesn't really get resolved.
I just pulled the movie up as reference and it feels like that scene is from a different, better movie.

              Anonymous

Yeah, well but the symbyote is pretty big part of the modern lore and it was well done.

              not this shit again

i told you last time buff venom was literally his first fricking appearance you gaslighting israelite

I think he is refering to the original secret war comic book. That being said the face of SM3 venom is indeed closer to the original comic book look than the modern depiction with the broken jaw and huge tongue

                Anonymous

                >Yeah, well but the symbyote is pretty big part of the modern lore and it was well done.
I think it's pretty clear while watching 1 and 2 that adherence to specifics from the comics didn't take priority over telling the story they wanted to. The comic autists were largely satisfied with Homecoming, and it just wasn't as good of a movie. The best parts of Spider-Man 1 play like a (good) brat pack movie, not capeshit stuff as much.

                >I think he is refering to the original secret war comic book
no he's referring to the ASM run when peter started using the symbiote suit, which first appeared in 252. then in 299, we see venom. in 300, we see eddie brock. pic related. he's always been a buff gymgay and the broken jaw has been there since day one.

                >The real Peter being self-centered because he's high on life doesn't really get resolved.
he literally becomes such a smug butthole that he drives MJ away after accidentally smacking her in the club. he realizes this and after putting two and two together, goes to church for confession and rips off the symbiote suit. now stop pretending you've seen the movie before you keep on making shit up.

My point is that the presence of the black suit muddles up character motivations and drama in a way that simply doesn't exist in the earlier movies. Like I said, everything Harry has going on in SM1 with his dad, Peter, and MJ. I found all of that surprisingly compelling on my recent rewatch and that character did not need a mind-altering substance to act the way he did with the characters that he's closest to.

Would have been much better without venom and just focus on harry as the main bad. The amnesia part is stupid too so get rid of that and just make the movje about Harry ruining peters life as much as possible. It would also be kino if peter is hunting down sandmad for the death lf uncle ben, before realizing hes just as bad as harry.

Criticism of the time that does not hold up
    >Emo Peter
This is some of the best comedy put to screen in the last two decades because that's exactly what Peter Parker would assume a dark hero would act.
    >Yet more relationship drama
No capeshit made today would have the maturity to focus on the realistic strife of preparing for marriage.

    Criticism that holds up
    >Too many villains/Venom sucked
It's still true. He's just too rushed.
    >How some of the drama is facilitated
There is no reason for Peter to not tell MJ that Harry knows his secret.

Don’t forget that despite acting like a dork the dude had pussy thrown at him for acting more assertive. Betty Brant, Olga, Gwen, and even the fricking waitress in the Jazz Club were all waiting to get on his dick.

I remember Spider-Man 3 legitimately confusing the frick out of me as a kid because I was insanely hyped for it and on paper it had everything I wanted in a sequel, including a bunch of cool scenes I liked, but I didn't like it and I didn't understand why.

I didn't understand stuff like pacing and story structure but I could still feel in my bones that this film wasn't good.

      >I didn't understand stuff like pacing and story structure but I could still feel in my bones that this film wasn't good.
I gained this 'sense' during my teens when I began to study film at school and watch movies more intently. I was able to predict iMDb scores of major films with 1. However, since entering my early 20s and diving into low budget exploitation flicks and monster movies, I've lost it. I do appreciate "bad" movies now though.

Friendly reminder that this movie's version of Eddie Brock and the whole church scene are lifted verbatim from the comics, the edgy bodybuilder Venom happened much later.

Topher Grace as Brock ruined it 100%, even the Venom standalone films are pretty lame. The reason Brock was great as Venom was because he was on paper cooler, chadder and much more natually athletic than Parker. It made Venom threatening, like here is guy with powers who looks stronger and more threatening than Spidey, how can he compete? Topher Grace and his girl arms bring none of that and the whole point of the character is lost, should have never been included at all, should have just been Sandman.
