Making money is not the point. Respectability in their own personal circles / uncancellability is the point. Look what a vocal supporter of women's rights Weinstein was before he got busted. These people do not care if their companies or countries sink without trace, their own financial and social positions are completely secure.

It isn't like fury Road. That's a lot of complaints about it. There is like one main action set piece with the war boys and the new rig but that is very basic and mostly cg.
          It was mostly world building.

The praise for fury road always felt very dishonest and surface level, I feel somewhat justified in that belief, seems like that superficial praise wasn’t here this time around, maybe they got greedy and didn’t try to astroturf this film as a modern masterpiece like before.

I think Fury Road was pretty great, but I just don't care about Furiosa enough to go pay to see this.
I might stream it in a year or 2 when I'm bored.
Frankly Fury Road is as detached from the Madmax character as I'm willing to accept. Mad Max without Mad Max? Eh.
I still would have rathered Mel Gibson had played Max in Fury Road too but Hardy did just good enough.

          Anonymous

don't watch it for Furiosa. much like Max she's just the excuse to tell a story, and in this case you get a big lore-dump on the world of Fury Road

        Anonymous

The film where Max is treated horribly throughout? That's already a Furiosa film, and the most popular character was the villain. I overall liked it and almost nobody produces action sequences like George Miller, but Furiosa comes off as him trying to 'correct' what he did right in Fury Road, as if it was a mistake to make the villain so Based and quotable. Given the direction Hollywood has taken since 2015, the people who genuinely liked Fury Road can only expect another lecture instead of an adventure in the latest film. Back then, Miller's idea for the Furiosa film was a sequel that cast her as the new villain, ruling the wasteland from the Citadel and no better than Immortan Joe.

Oh I wonder why that concept was dropped?

Charlize Theron hated working on the movie, no? I don't see her coming back for a sequel.

Her main problem was Hardy, who was never going to be in her(2nd) film. It would have been so much more meaningful for Furiosa's followers to be the ones to depose her.

Its significantly worse than just the "lowest in decades".
      >If the George Miller directed prequel comes in on the low end [$31 M], the last time a No. 1 movie or Memorial Day opening title filed a 4-day gross take that was lower was back in 1983 with 1983’s Return of the Jedi when it made $30.5M — and that was a lot of money back then.

      >If Furiosa hits at the high end of its current range at $35M, then that’s the lowest Memorial Day weekend opening since 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple which did $33.9M. Those ’80s grosses are unadjusted for inflation.

In other words, this is the worst opening in the history of Memorial Day weekend.

It’s so weird how the movie goes out of it’s way to not only make Dementus the real target of Furiosa’s grudge, but also make Dementus never do anything physical to Furiosa despite her massive hateboner for him

      >Takes a liking to her and repeatedly tries to make her his surrogate daughter, to the point of giving her his dead daughter’s bear
      >Specifically prevents his men from roughing her up when they captured her
      >Old guy specifically tells her Dementus takes care of useful people
      >Tries to prevent her being traded to Joe
      >Both great wrongs dealt to her are harming loved ones and making her watch
      >Final scene is him basically begging her for some level of understanding and acceptance
It’s like they wanted to make this nightmarish abusive figure that’s haunted Furiosa nearly all her life but chickened out of showing him actually do anything but be civil and courteous when it’s just the two of them together. His grand misdeeds are making a spectacle out of her loved one’s deaths but the first time he went out of his way to keep her alive, the second time he didn’t recognise her at all, and BOTH TIMES it happened after she and said loved ones jumped his men out of nowhere and started killing in cold blood. Remember it’s the Many Mothers’ policy to just shoot interlopers on sight.

If I didn’t know better I’d think the movie is SUPPOSED to make you think Furiosa is unhinged and inhuman. Don’t get me wrong, Dementus is clearly proud of being a piece of shit, but the protagonist centred morality of the movie is extremely strong.

It was a fine movie, but having watched it, I don't understand why it took 8 years to make or what George Miller saw in this character that demanded a prequel
I feel like I understand her character exactly as much as I did after Fury Road, and this doesn't recontextualize that movie in any major way. You understood that Furiosa was a captive and wanted to go home after 5 minutes of watching Fury Road, the only new noteworthy detail I can think of is that she had a kind of romance with a guy who was basically a bargain bin Mad Max

  41. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

I just got home from this. The theater was totally full.
I really liked it, but not as much as Fury Road. I like that he didn't just remake Fury Road too, it has a very different feel in the same setting.

      Anonymous

I will say that was probably the strongest aspect of it, it fills in a lot of the world building that Fury Road only obliquely hinted at, and as a result it feels like it's easier to take the wasteland as a real place where society broke down, instead of this weird over the top fantasy land. Things started leaning a little closer to Road Warrior instead of the zaniness of Thunderdome, and I could appreciate that

        Anonymous

obliquely hinting at trite world building is better than focusing on it, if anything this movie makes the setting feel smaller

        Anonymous

And at the same time there were a couple scenes where they made strong connections to Fury Road through the music and camera angles. It was pretty smart execution in that way.
I was compelled all the way through, but the end was a tad weak.
I liked the story of Dementus. He was actually extremely successful until he became a stationary leader for too long.

To the surprise of absolutely no-one with a brain. We already got enough information in Fury Road about these characters to be completely satisfied, and yet again it has the prequel problem of zero dramatic tension because we’ve already seen the end of the protagonist’s journey in a previous film. Should have just gone straight ahead with Mad Max: The Wasteland instead.

A lot of people try to argue Fury Road wasn't woke trash. They're wrong and likely have sex with men.
Everybody that hasn't seen Furiosa seems to think it's woke trash. They're wrong and likely arrived to this site within the last five years.

Pirate it when it's up and see it for yourself. Quit driving your opinions based on what a bunch of israeli marketers put together.

It’s was alright, but ultimately disappointing. I feel the setup itself is flawed, it should have focused on a specific event, not the 5 chapters we got. The coolest part I thought, was the 40-Day Wasteland War, which we got as a montage, like we get to see a battlefield, and then it’s gone, the movie feels afraid to slow down, next scene, next scene, let’s go

Hemsworth as Dementus is very dissapointing, like a man named Dementus, he don’t do a lot of demented things. Also didn’t like how immortan Joe or the war boys or the citadel didn’t really change in style at all in 15 years. Lack of unique and memorable vehicles

All I care about is that it kills Chris Hemsworths career, I want him to frick off into the sun with his equally untalented brother.

I'm Australian so I'm allowed to hate them.

The truth is that Anya Taylor Joy wasn’t blockbuster material. I avoid movies with either Hemsworth because a lot are streaming-tier. I also already saw Fury Road and that wasn’t long ago…this looked like more of the same. The mad max movies just aren’t everybody’s thing.

How did Dementus and his people even invade Bullet Farm.

Probably the same way they invaded gastown, but easier because they werent even a known threat.
      >boss is away
      >Dementus is one of the warlords at this point so you just let him in because you dont know better
      >his crew kills off the lieutenants and the farmers dont fight back
      >opens the gates to let in the rest of the horde

It was much better than the trailers. I enjoyed it for the most part, not as adrenaline pumping as Fury Road, but still decent and worth watching.
Anya was ironically the weakest link in the film, complete nothingburger performance. The little girl at the start did a better job.

    Power level rankings:

Mad Max 2 Solid 9/10 from start to finish.
Fury Road 8/10, incredible first half but let down by the second half.
Mad Max 7/10, iconic characters and chases even if a bit dated
Furiosa 6-7/10, not great, not terrible.
Beyond Thunderdome 5/10, remains the worst in the franchise

If there was any problem that a movie about world building had here, was that it just explained stuff from Fury Road. Nothing new was added to the world.

Like if Mad Max Wasteland now was just explaining "how people found/built up Gas Town and Bullet Town and the people who were at the Citadel first", who the frick cares.
