It's the short version. There's a longer one with scenes from the first trailer, I assume. No clue when the release is but it's been announced some time ago. More character backstories and such. I was honestly pleasantly surprised how decent this turned out to be.

I would generally agree on flashbacks except that Snyder does those in a very visual manner, which doesn't throw you out of the movie. And you won't get around plenty of backstory for something with epic ambitions like this. No way.

my honest review is that it seems like they were overzealous with the first movie, trying to cram a whole franchise worth of lore into the exposition of the first movie and it doesn't work.

Snyder's idea for the movie is not bad at all. He just gets up his own ass and can't properly structure the story within the allotted time. We get two long-winded flashbacks about Kora that could have been 1/5 as long and still get the message across. Whereas the very unsurprising twist gets one tiny scene to foreshadow it and no one else gets any fricking development. Snyder needs to make a fricking series if he sucks this much at time management.

Because I often hear James talking about how that's an idea which was spawned from his childhood imagination and I feel like you can see that present there too. Acting was awful, cinematography and CGI was straight out of mid-2000's.
6/10 sci-fi would be something like The Creator.
Rebel Moon is just bad, 2/10 at best. As much as it pains me the critics are absolutely right about this one. It obviously can be enjoyable depending on your expectations, but by all objective means this is a bad movie.

All lies. Acting was fine. Only one CG shot was bad (them heading to their ship leaving the planet with the eagle creature) and cinematography was decent as well, which I didn't expect after Army of the Dead. Stop lying.

There are things that I absolutely adored about this movie, production design was brilliant and I liked most of the aliens and robots. I would consider it something close to Chronicles of Riddick. It's bad and incompetently made, but at least it's creative and can be inspiring.

It's becoming quite a worrisome trend these days. Instead of being honest & straight up admitting that the film was pure unwatchable trash, people, all of a sudden, start coming up with all sorts of excuses in order to avoid the truth & uttering what's really on their minds. It felt like they had pitched an andor style 6-8 episode season but were forced to cram it into a movie instead.

As usual Snyders writing and slow motion is so exaggerated and sappy its practically diabetic, full of ham fisted tropes and predictable plots. Also the choreography was sloppy and cumbersome

I still enjoyed the hell out of it though.

The world building was fun, the villains equal parts authoritarian conquerors and esoteric techno mystics, this felt more like a story out of the 40k universe "diaries of a commissar" than it did a star wars ripoff. Although each of the characters on the main cast could have used a full episode to introduce, they were still quite fun and what little we get of their backstory could be good if it's explored in the future and not just dropped as is.

The costuming was mostly good, although the farmers were a fairly boring European ripoff, the blood axe rebels costumes were missing something, and the main antagonists costume was a bit misleading, looking like an SS uniform when the empire itself was modeled more off the Roman empire (complete with very on the nose colloseum).

I do also feel snyder is going a bit overboard with the lense flare and light bloom in this movie

Overall 7/10. Should have been a limited series instead of a movie. Looking forward to pt 2

The attempts at EPIC SWEEPING SCI-FI ironically make it feel much smaller, every outdoor shot has five closeup planets filling the sky but none of them look like they're in the scene. It just makes scenes I assume were shot in actual outdoor locations look like a tiny soundstage with an unconvincing greenscreen behind them.

      Anonymous

i didn't mind that particular aspect so much, but i do agree about attempting epic sci fi. instead of just being comfortable in its own shoes, the whole experience comes off as tryhard.
what stood out most to me was the script, especially the dialog. this movie has the problem where every character sounds like they're speaking words that no one in real life says and it was so distracting. one scene in particular is in the beginning when one of the farmer guys is talking to the villain and uses the word benevolent when referring to him. i was just jesus god damned christ nobody much less a farmer would ever actually say benevolent.

      Anonymous

Exactly right. Snyder sucks. Being edgy and violent for the sake of it with tons of swearing and nudity also sucks. I got the distinct impression that the Snyder cut is just going to be nonstop F bombs, the female lead having sex with at least 3 of the different men in the group, and gorier fight scenes. There still won't be a plot. There still won't be character development. The CGI will still be terrible. The fight scenes will still be dull and poorly choreographed with lots of needless slomo to try and hide how lame they are. The lighting and cinematography will still be bad. There will still be no cohesion to its designs and aesthetic leading to a distinctly AI generated look and feel to the movie. It's bad no matter what and Snyder will never make a good movie.

In the director's cut they reveal that the Imperium wasn't that bad when the old king was alive. The truly bad one was the general Balisarius, who's not native to the Mother World. He came from a conquered planet and decided to one day lead the Imperium.
The general Balisarius adopted and raise Kora because he sees himself in her. His plan was for him to slay the old king, make Kora slay the princess, so the two could lead the Imperium.
The old king was slain, but Kora ran after blowing the brains of the princess.
The Imperium know under the leadership of regent Balisarius is decaying and becoming more and more corrupt.

The plot twist is that Kora didn't actually kill the princess, Kora rescued the princess and took her to the farming planet. The princess is the farm girl seen talking with the robot.

Netflix asked to axe this from the theatrical cut because apparently having angry immigrants ruin the empire from within was bad optics, but it is still present in the director's cut.

        Anonymous

When they first meet he legitimately looks like a teenager and she mentions he was "young" then. So it's possible he'd actually not be much older than her. Maybe like 10 years older or something.

          >Maybe like 10 years older or something.
Then they should've cast a guy in his 50s and not a 36-year-old who can't even pull off a fake beard.

He is based on Joseph Stalin, who Zack Snyder hates with a passion.

      >The Rebel Moon mythos is already charted out far beyond the events of the first two movies. Snyder has the history of the Imperium chronicled back in time several millennia, even including their universe creation mythology, some of which will be featured or referenced in flashbacks.
      >Hundreds of years before the events of the movie there was a renaissance at the height of the Imperium. Art and culture were at their peak, but the Imperium has been in a state of disrepair since then, especially after the death of the “Slain King” four years prior to the events of Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire. According to producer Deborah Snyder: “after the royal family's death…they didn't try and advance…they were war machines. So that's, everything was very practical…it's just not taken care of like it was when the king was alive. All of that kind of gets lost, that appreciation of the art of everything.”
      >While the Slain King was an Imperial colonizer, the Imperium got even more brutal and oppressive under the reign of his replacement, Regent Balisarius according to Zack Snyder: “the old king is much more a straight-up imperialist but like in the tradition you know where I feel like the Regent Balsarius he's much more like a dictator like, as [Joseph] Stalin was, you know, he'd be happy to raze a planet just for its natural resources rather than like ‘oh we should land and see what the people are like and maybe some of them can fight for us’ and you know like ‘maybe we could assimilate their culture into ours’ where it was a much more sort of 18th-century imperialism… with old king being based on the Nicholas II who was the last Tsar of the Russian Empire, that expansion was a bit aggressive but at the same there was a bit of compassion for its people, and now it's worse.”

There is rumor that a prince will be revealed soon, with the rumor saying that it will be played by Henry Cavill. He's going to play the Slain King's son, who wasn't able to take the crown because he is in a distant sector of space battling some space horrors or something. He'll appear in the third movie and be angry that his father and sister were slain by off-world scum and try to exact rebellion.

    >While there’s far more groups and factions in the Rebel Moon universe, that was the basic separation for most of the props we saw. Imperium technology is denoted by its more brutalist and utilitarian design and shows signs of deterioration and patchwork repairs, the rebels' technology is mostly stolen and repurposed Imperium technology, and Veldt technology is more hand-made, naturalistic, and aesthetically pleasing.
    >Sci-fi weapons in other properties typically operate by shooting some sort of energy or laser, but Rebel Moon’s gun projectiles are a little different. Guns are loaded with tank-like magazines containing pressurized plasma. When fired, the guns shoot a blast of what prop master Brad Elliot described as a “lava cork.” Elliot says “it’s molten, it's heavy, and it's about the size of a cork. So if it hit you, it would knock you over, but the hole that it would create would cauterize.” On Veldt, the weapons operate on a similar technology, but operate a little differently and generally fire a larger chunk of plasma Elliot referred to as a “lava puck.”

The stupid lava guns didn't work. It just looked stupid.

Maybe it's my dad's tv or something but all of the backgrounds were glaringly fake and I could clearly see they were just acting in front of a greenscreen. The edge of the set was visible in every scene.

      Anonymous

This. The backgrounds were very inconsistent. The physical sets were fine but the cgi/greenscreen ones were awful. The nuke scene for instance was absolutely egregious when they raze King Levitica's world.

        Anonymous

That entire world looked fricking dreadful actually. Not a single shot of it looked like they were where they said they were. In fact the only worthwhile effect was the King there, whose CG looked well. Otherwise they all just looked like they were stood in a big green room. Even the introduction, we see a ship flying, then Sofia Boutella is just there on this void of a place talking to the King. Very jarring.

      Anonymous

The worst part is much of it was on actual sets....but they're worthless because the unconvincing digital backgrounds just make the sets look small and cramped. There was a scene early on where she exposited her backstory to Daario 2, they were camping with another giant glowing Burning Crusade skybox in the background, and even though I bet that was filmed out in the desert shooting location ,it looked like the most rinky dink little soundstage in front of a greenscreen. It did the opposite of what it was supposed to do.

Here's news about the R-rated cut.

        >One of the main differences between the original and the director's cuts will be their explicit content. Rebel Moon received a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association for "sequences of strong violence, sexual assault, bloody images, language, sexual material, and partial nudity." While the original version is already pushing the limits of the PG-13 rating and drawing some ire, the extended director's cuts will be rated R, allowing them to show even more of the aforementioned explicit content, including some very, VERY graphical sex scenes as well as a rape scene.

Why not just release the r rated version right away? Netflix has plenty of gory/soft porn shows already on its platform. They shouldn't care.

Why not just release the r rated version right away? Netflix has plenty of gory/soft porn shows already on its platform. They shouldn't care.

The apparent reason was the runtime. Netflix told him most people won't watch long movies on their streaming. They'll binge shows for hours, but won't sit down to watch long movies. So Netflix asked him if he wanted to cut the movie in two and if possible making under two hours, with him being allowed to do whatever he wants with his own director's cut.

And the reason he couldn't make his PG13 cut 10 minutes longer to include some actual connective tissue is? Since I'm assuming the extra hour of the R rated cut is not simply 60 minutes of gore shots added to scenes and nude shots.

Daario 2, Griffin guy, and I don't know, the robot.

Goonar, Charlie Hunnan and her dead boyfriend

The other farmer that is held as a great hunter in the village. When she comes from the party to come to sleep and has that conversation with the old man about her needing to find a more permanent relationship, she'd just come from fricking the village hunter.

The other is Kai, of course. Which is why she was so hurt by his betrayal, and why that scene about him goofing about being a changed man actually happens. The director's cut set up a love triangle between Gunnar, Kora, and Kai, with Gunnar essentially being cuckolded throughout the movie by Kora because she's sleeping with several guys BUT him, despite him being in love with her.
Then at some point she actually sleep with Gunnar before the ending, when they're all heading back to the village.

Apparently, Zack Snyder have autism about things being left implied. He wants to see it all.
Same reason why Batman killed in BvS. The reason wasn't so much because Batman was worn down and suicidal, but because Snyder hates it that superhero movies always cut away whenever a henchmen gets knocked out by a hero, specially in circumstances that could end up with their possible death. So he wanted to show Batman "actually" killing henchmen.

Same with this. He knows that Star Wars had sex and everything, because of the Cantina. But he wants it to be shown.

Because robot characters, due to their inherent inhuman nature often contrasting with their reckoning with very human emotions, are a potent source of pathos for audiences, even when written by a shite writer like Snyder. Robot characters are regularly a highlight of sci-fi media, they're hard to get wrong frankly. The Tin Man, basically.

Now, the fact that the robot got an extended dialogue scene that had absolutely nothing to do with the central plot of recruiting seven space samurai, and simply featured him talking about his uncertain place in the universe and his feelings of failure, that also might have something to do with it. Compare that to the amount of character development the goon squad got. New planet, new gimmick fighter, recruited, exposition scene, new planet, new gimmick fighter, rinse and repeat.

The extra evil soldier who was extra evil to everyone and everything made me laugh, like how are you even alive? In this lawless universe you're telling me no one just shot him in the head at some point before now?

Some extremely evil soldiers who seem to do nothing but evil soldier things try to gangrape a village girl, complete with laughable dialogue, then the protagonist shows up and kills them

ahh shame. I thought it would be like a 1v1 and not gangrape bad shit with "LOOK HOW EVIL THEY ARE!!!"

When they resurrect the bad guy at the end, they send his "mind" into a matrix like space

Well you see, they never invented telephones in Motherworld. So they had to invent The Matrix to communicate.

Was the buzz cutted girl supposed to be someone? Because she just walked into a scene and the movie acted like we already met her earlier and she'd been established. But she hadn't. I had no idea who she was. Then later she's getting an oh no the leader is dead sad scene and I still don't know who she is.

She's just some rebel who had a crush on the angry black rebel man

I barely knew the black man's character when he's getting a big heroic sacrifice, I know his random underling even less.

She is a girl that was rescued by the Bloodaxes and became a rebel. The movie has a whole backstory for her, but it was cut.

She goes from a cute girl to a troony after joining the rebels.

You know, making a movie that's 7 hours long and then has to be cut down to 2 hours and thus is incomprehensible might point to your original 7 hour requirement to make sense as being a flaw.

The robot have tons of scenes in the director's cut according to Zack Snyder.

There were more scenes about the Regent Balisarius, showing him murdering the king and being a c**t.

    https://streamable.com/v4zmgx

Also, apparently there are talks about a TV show focusing entirely on the evil Regent. It is so obvious that Snyder is way more into the Imperium than the actually good guys.

I mean it's pretty obvious that Balisarius murdered the royals tbh. I took that for a given even if its never stated.

Here's is a thing. In the movie there is an orgy shown when depicting the MotherWorld. You see someone fricking four naked women, including the horned alien girl. This isn't in this version of the movie. She is a plant sent to spy the inner circle on Mother World.

        I've the actresses listed.

Someone please explain why stabbing a spear in the turret gunner caused the ship to crash. Is there a ten minute flashback that would explain it cut from the film?

Apparently the gunner was also the driver

The cast needs the context and fleshing out but I wish it was via actual dialogue and not cutscene spam lol

This is exactly why the robot felt more engaging, he had an actual dialogue scene instead of just press play on flashback.

Tarzan guy really did nothing in this film. Even less than the other characters. But we got a whole terrible scene of him flying a hippogriff.

The funny thing is that the director's cut have an entire different opening and ending. Most of the POV isn't even focused on Kora, the protagonist.

    >"We're still tweaking, but they'll probably be 45-minutes to an hour longer, each one. You get more character. You get a lot more of everything. It's not just a few deleted scenes."
    >Snyder teased: “It’s, like, an hour longer and has a whole other opening that’s all Ed (Skrein). It focus on Belisarius. It’s really crazy.”
    >“Basically, there was a Royal Family devouring the universe but with benevolent intentions,” Snyder explained.
    >“Then, once [Regent] Balisarius (Fra Free) comes to power, it’s more of a Napoleonic concept, as he was afraid of the Motherworld’s Empire but decide to take it from within.
    >“And I just think that those things are so easy to relate to in our history and mythology. And it’s incredible how humans just keep doing the same thing over and over.”
