Different anon, but Rogan was pretty vocal about saying that the reason it failed was because it "pissed off tens of thousands of white supremacists." How involved he was or wasn't doesn't change the fact that he was pretty defensive of the reaction people had for it.

This looks nothing like Spider-Verse. They're both stylized, but in different ways. Are we just gonna call every movie that doesn't have industry standard realistic textures and lighting Spider-Verse copycats? Spider-Verse isn't being copied, it simply opened the floodgates to something that was bubbling beneath the surface for a long time.

        Anonymous

I work in the industry, spiderverse followed by arcane radically changed a LOT of production pipelines and style demands. It's not "copying" them but I can guarantee you that the style development had both those properties on the wall in vis-dev underlined and bolded...twice. There also probably some overlap in the people working on both.

I see people make this statement all the time, and all the time I have to point out that as the number of people in any given conversation increases, the odds that they all agree on any particular topic drops. It's really not a difficult concept to grasp.
Can you find 10 people who liked a niche pilot or cartoon? Easily. Now find 100. It gets a little harder. Then look at the number of unique IPs that Cinemaphile gets in a day. At some point or another, you're going to be making a thread where someone's going to see it and share their opinion that they don't like it. And that's fine. But you're taking away the wrong message. With the number of people on an anonymous image board like this, you will find in just about any given thread someone expressing dissent from the popular opinion.

I do hope that makes sense.

      Anonymous

That's not what Cinemaphile as a whole is for anymore. This place is an outrage grooming tool used to push people towards the right by constantly portraying them as victims and feeding them things to be mad about.

      Anonymous

Yes. But instead of saying "lets talk about what we like about this movie!" we just make a thread that says something to the effect of "He wasn't good enough for her" *Picture of main character standing next to a love interest* or *Picture of some woman in a movie*.
This way you keep the topic related to something in a movie or TV series. It becomes about concepts or characters instead of being a circlejerk. Granted it will likely turn into a circlejerk later on in the conversation but at least its somewhat earned.

When spider verse was being stylistic it looks good, the problem is faces had a very weird look to them half the time and much of the movie wasn't that stylized all things considered. They should have made each alternate universe slightly different in some way visually and made it so that each spiderman looked visually distinct with the own art style as opposed to where it's just RATM looking like pig pen, penni being anime, Lego, and udk old times spiderman

Organic rough and imperfect like in 2D animation or stop motion is fine, disingenuously making CG look shittier on purpose is not and is a cheap copout to developing actually good looking CG aesthetics

        Anonymous

It's like purposely lowering the frame rate for shows like Dragon Prince and some of those 3D anime to have the same framerate as the typical anime series. Anime has 12 fps due to budgetary limitations. 3D as it is shouldn't have that issue, so making the product look worse to unnecessarily go for a "style" is totally pretentious.

        Anonymous

Is it disingenuous if it's being done on purpose though? It's like making a film in black and white today, or filming with 16mm or some other weird format. You can say it's being done for cheap art points but at the same time if it *looks* good then maybe cheap is better? I mean no-one really criticises South Park for looking cheap.

          Anonymous

It's disingenuous as long as you're going out of your way to make the end result shittier as opposed to the shitty result being a consequence of the process itself. Filming in black and white film or regular film for film grain is okay, filming digitally and then editing the footage to look black and white or have film grain is not.

            Anonymous

What if you’re editing stuff to make it look better? Like drawing digitally and then editing it to make it look like traditional cel animation?

There's nothing wrong with the artstyle, it's actuall really good, it's the subject matter that's the problem, the ugliest possible versions of the teenage mutant ninja turtles talking like "heckin realistic" (not at all) children and the ugliest possible april o neil.
If they used the same techniques and artstyle for something good it would look fantastic.
