Han Solo in ANH makes a comment on how ISDs are really fast.
                >"I've outrun Imperial starships … I'm talking about the big Corellian ships now."
The Millennium Falcon also was unable to outrun the 3 ISDs in ESB

In real life US aircraft carriers, despite being big as frick, are faster than most ships due to their powerful nuclear reactors powering them. It makes perfect sense the these big ass ISDs have powerful engines.

They're actually so fast that the first thing they're ever seen doing is overtaking at sublight a ship colloquially called a blockade runner, that is like half engine by volume
Then like the other anon said, Han specifically comments on their speed and they maintain pursuit on the falcon after hoth

supposedly victory class star destroyers, the smaller ones, could enter orbit. However that's clearly not a victory in the pic. Imperial class star destroyers, which that is, were too large.

They look neat for scifi movies but they're stupid for real life and do not work in real physics. Same as the Enterprise. It's a real shame, but real starships are boring as frick and not that fun to look at. Literally 2001 is what starships will look like, cyclinders are the essentially the best for real physical craft. I know, it's disappointing.

I know, it's lame to learn that. It's why the Expanse ships are designed the way they are, mostly cylindrical, to be close to realistic.

at least these can account for non-magical gravity in-ship (stacked skyscraper), which outside of spinning will be the main driver in ship design.

              Anonymous

I actually expected the belter ships to buck that trend. It'd be nice if their ships were more geared towards floaty movement.

              Anonymous

I remember expanse books explicitly stating that the spaceship form didn't matter at all, as there's no wind, water, friction or air resistance in open space. They can look as they please, as long as they fulfill their purpose.

                The aerodynamics don't matter, obviously.
The structural integrity does matter, a lot. Start accelerating (or decelerating) with huge engines in the wrong place and you'll rip the ship apart.

Planets are pretty small and uncomplex since this is for teens. But anyway, stormtroopers and ties used to be actually deadly, in the literature anyway, and the destroyer could sit in orbit raining nuclear blasts on the seat of government, bases, populations, or supplies until they capitulate

yes really, you just need to destroy the planet shield generator, that's it , once that is gone you bombard major cities until they capitulate
