That makes sense. First one seems more artistic than the second one which seems more general fun. They seem to head back to being more artistic in the third. From that one on they seem to be able maintain a nice balance between artistry and fun, besides maybe Americats.
the only memorable thing about Americats is the Donald Trump cameo >Donald Trump offered a minor voice cameo as Uncle Sam the Juggler[12]. CBS Entertainment president Bud Grant described the cameo as a "personal favor" from Donald Trump, recorded in "about an hour" while Trump was in Studio City on business[58]. Voice directors for the film would later recount: "Trump didn't seem to know much about the franchise. We were trying to tell him that his part was for a carny on the Fourth of July in Central Park, but the name "Cats of Istanbul" made Trump adamant to put on an Arabic accent for much of the session. It was awkward, but in the end we got something that worked well enough for a cameo."[59] At the Academy Awards that year, Trump told reporters from Entertainment Tonight that he "even voiced a cartoon this year, which my son, Donald Jr, loves very much, by the way."[60]

If he were anybody else, Nolan's career would've ended with Americats.
First one is a pretty serious, violent and grim movie from 1978 about the harsh life of Istanbul's street cats. The second movie from 1982 is basically a kid friendly remake of the first one with the black cat Abib as the main character who would go on to become iconic as the protagonist of the series.
The original protagonist was their mustachioed owner. The black cat was a minor character whose surprise popularity was huge and became the face of the franchise going forward.
The original protagonist was their mustachioed owner. The black cat was a minor character whose surprise popularity was huge and became the face of the franchise going forward.
Cats 1: the black cat has only 1 scene that was a massive hit
Cats 2: the black cat is still a fairly minor character but is used prominently in the marketing
Cats 3: the black cat has his own C-plot but the marketing acts as if it's the A-plot
Cats 4: the black cat is part of the central cast
Cats 5+: the black cat is the undisputed main character
The first film was some made-for-tv pile of shit but the sequel rights was sold to a different studio that did a way better job. Similar situation happened with The Cat Returns.
Black cat (albi) was first featured in an old Turkish comic book series (think their version of The Dandy) by the original author. He merged a lot of old creations into the first few films, but I believe it was the film director who decided to make albi more prominent past the first film
I recommend the comics if you can find them, short but humorous albeit some Turkish jokes might go past your head
Black cat is the kid of the two protagonists from the first movie. Didn't you see the ending scene where they showed him sleeping in his crib after all their adventures?
> The released film ”Cats 4: Back in Time” consists of two segments, which are "Egyptian Cat Gods” and ”Cats of Constantinople”. They were originally meant to be episodes of a series that was never completed called Cats in Time. Some additional animation was done to link the stories more closely
It's obvious that Anon's parents found Americats in the bargain bin DVD section and he just grew up watching it so has serious nostalgia goggles that even now have him going "w-well it's not that bad".
>original trilogy is considered a masterpiece >4 completely ruins everything by being an obvious cash grab and riddled with studio meddling >5 was the comeback after 10 years, it was an artistic passion project but was unable to capture the success of the original except amongst hard-core fans >6 was the 3d movie made for American audiences and a soft reboot of the series
>scene where Abib flies an air freighter into Baron Herschel's walking wartower
Look, I know this one was made over the course of like 5 years, but don't you think they coulda changed that part considering it came out in late 2002?
1. Considered to be a masterpiece. Heartfelt story, amazing art.
2 & 3. Added a bit of comedy while still having a strong story. Whether they were better than 1 is disputed. Trilogy finished here.
4. The director of the original 3 didn't work on this project. The plot wasn't compelling. Can skip.
5. Although another new director handled this one, it is better than 4. Some say nostalgia is the reason why it's slightly less well regarded than 2&3. A parts of 4 were retconned.
6. 3D animated, completely different studio. Since the original one was bought out and merged. Leaned more into comedic elements while not having as strong of a story as the 123 & 5. Branding was used to draw the children of the kids who watched the original trilogy.
1 is entirely different in genre and the sequels are more akin to spin offs than anything else. The third is were things started to get really good, 4th fricked up but then 5 solidified it as masterpiece. 6 is alright and 7 is complete catwater
I appreciate that Cats 4 was filmed with actual cats and live set pieces near the Giza complex, but they couldn't get much emotion out of the cats. Did it really cost 200 million to make?
I'm glad Linkara was beaten to death for saying Cats Of Istanbul 5: Moscow Meow! wasn't perfect.

>The modern fez owes much of its popularity to the Ottoman era. The fez became a symbol of the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century. In 1827, Mahmud II mandated the fez as a modern headdress for his new army, the Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye. The decision was inspired by the Ottoman naval command, who had previously returned from the Maghreb having embraced the style. In 1829, Mahmud issued new regulations mandating use of the fez by all civil and religious officials. The intention was to replace the turban, which acted as a marker of identity and so divided rather than unified the population. A century later, in 1925, the fez was outlawed in Turkey as part of Atatürk's reforms.
I recommend anyone read up on Ataturks life. Literally the closest figure to Napoleon in the modern era. He successfully removed roaches out of Turkey for half a century. A shame that modern Turkey is against everything he set turkey up to be.

What i liked about the original novel is the cats didn't speak and were more "animal"-like. The later sequels just really hammed it up to the point they're barely cats
>it's a Cats of Istanbul thread
hahahaha these always remind me that Disney Pixar is cranking out another pointless, soulless property every year that no one will see or get excited about yet this throwaway concept has me wanting to see an entire series of like 9 movies already
Walt Disney as in becoming a legendary animator and director who will leave behind a multi billion dollar enterprise, not some troony orbiting israelitetube eceleb selling shitty burgers, soon to be forgotten as the kids move on to the next thing.
Don't know if you all remember the 80s OVA that some Japanese studio did where Abib lead a group of thieves called the "Red Fez Guild". Interesting for an anime only concept. I remember seeing this everywhere in bargin bins on VHS back in the 90s.

A series of anime movies that were wildly popular in Japan but pretty niche in the West. The franchise pretty much died after the 2009 3D animated reboot flopped.
Can someone give me some recommendation for something that is reminiscent of these cats posters? They look fricking awesome. Kinda reminds me of pom poko or lupin.
Kek i thought you were memeing at first, i forgot it was called this. I actually enjoyed this movie much more than I though I would but it felt kind of like an empty world. Idk maybe I'm tripping.
Can't wait for when in like 5 years every random hobbyist groups, working from a garage will be able to generate entire studio-grade animated and live-action movies in weeks. 99% will be slop, but the gemeralds will be worth it.
Chan is a tabby cat who works as a detective for the Paws Police Department in Hong Kong, a city full of crime and chaos. He runs into the main protagonist of the Cats of Istanbul series "Kara", a black cat. Their first case together is to track down the elusive catnip kingpin, Meow Ming, who is flooding the streets with the addictive substance. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, such as rival gangs, corrupt officials, and dangerous traps. They also discover a budding friendship between them, as they learn to trust and respect each other. Will they be able to catch Meow Ming and his cronies, or will they lose their lives in the process? Watch “Cats of Hong Kong: Cantonese Cats”, a movie that combines action, comedy, and friendship in a feline-filled adventure.
Why is Cinemaphile so good at pitching movies? This is like the goat and crow australian road trip movie, or the guy who wrote an entire bond script, and those weren't even AI.
When it gets really moronic is when they shoehorn in the humanoid cats in 2 so the cats can interact with the world more but then they take them out in Athens and Time and just have the cats speaking with the humans durectly and being special talking cats but then they bring the humanoids back in 5 and they are basically their own race this time, so you have r3gular cats, talking cats, cat humanoids and actual humans. Shit is fricked.
The musical number about how "the whole world is your litterbox" included on the New Zealand 25th anniversary bluray was pure kino. Can't believe they cut it.
Funny how The Cats of Istanbul 2 was nearly pulled from Home Video release in New Zealand after some joke dream sequence involving the Gallipoli campaign. It was deemed "not insensitive enough" and just had it's rating bumped up instead.
This whole thread reminds me of how I came up with Studio Splatter, a nonexistent animation studio. I even came up with their whole catalog and history.
A chunk of the catalog I made. Some adaptations, some original. Their magnum opus is usually considered to be Mockingbirds, a modernized, more comical take on To Kill a Mockingbird. In this timeline, Toejam and Earl has a whole overarching story, and its popularity is the inspiration for multiple lore cartoons like Avatar and Adventure Time. Urban Lifestyle is a heavily edited dub of a french cartoon called Lou!, but it's considered a huge improvement. It's praised for it's humor and smart writing, and it edits out some stuff that wasn't in the books, actually making it more faithful. The BSC specials were directed by graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier.
This movie fricking mogs Grave of the Fireflies. Don't get me wrong, great movie, but this is something else entirely. Unironically had me sobbing at the end.

Why isn't the black cat in the first movie's poster? He a surprise appearance or what? His color change? He the next generation?
One more theory I came up with: the first one sucks and the second one with the black cat really started the series.
The orange cat was very hard to work with and demanded too much pay for the sequel.
That makes sense. First one seems more artistic than the second one which seems more general fun. They seem to head back to being more artistic in the third. From that one on they seem to be able maintain a nice balance between artistry and fun, besides maybe Americats.

The manga it was based on was pretty good
S O U L
the original Turkish novel is a classic
What i liked about the original novel is the cats didn't speak and were more "animal"-like. The later sequels just really hammed it up to the point they're barely cats
>it's a Cats of Istanbul thread
hahahaha these always remind me that Disney Pixar is cranking out another pointless, soulless property every year that no one will see or get excited about yet this throwaway concept has me wanting to see an entire series of like 9 movies already
Crazy innit, whoever can capitalize on this creative and market vacuum will be the next Walt Disney.
Unfortunately I chose the wrong career.
>the next Walt Disney.
Walt Disney as in becoming a legendary animator and director who will leave behind a multi billion dollar enterprise, not some troony orbiting israelitetube eceleb selling shitty burgers, soon to be forgotten as the kids move on to the next thing.
evil
>the forgotten Czechoslovakian spin off
Don't know if you all remember the 80s OVA that some Japanese studio did where Abib lead a group of thieves called the "Red Fez Guild". Interesting for an anime only concept. I remember seeing this everywhere in bargin bins on VHS back in the 90s.
I thought shoehorning in the japanese tourist protagonist who fangirls over the cats was a little heavy handed, but the action scenes were cool.
Why was this series was memory-holed until recently?
I don't know how I feel about the new sequel coming out guys, I feel like Disney is making it woke with the species swap
>Tinyek Talian as White Cat
>Dog
Why the frick does Disney do this???
They are promoting a species mixing agenda
God it's so tiresome. Why not just make your own damn film,
>Violent Dog
>White Pussy
They're not being very subtle are they?
>Americats
>Donald Trump offered a minor voice cameo as Uncle Sam the Juggler[12]. It was awkward, but in the end we got something that worked well enough for a cameo."[59] At the Academy Awards that year, Trump told reporters from Entertainment Tonight that he "even voiced a cartoon this year, which my son, Donald Jr, loves very much, by the way."[60]
I still have my Abibu plushie. Thanks for the memories, OP.
I cant believe that just a year ago that AI had extremely warped faces.
It's actually moving really fast and I bet in five years we'll have 30 second ai animated clips
I thought this was real at first but then I saw that the windows make no sense.
it's an office building
my cat Roger loves his plush, so glad my parents showed me this classic series when I was younger 🙂
I would literally buy this right now based solely on this thread
I only have have Abib beer coasters
Definitely a dumb product, they couldn't work out mechanics for how Abib would hold a beer.
I'd love to see Miyazaki's reaction to AI slop generating fake ghibli art. He'd probably have brain aneurysm on the spot.
I hope he has a heart attack from it
>waaaah real art can only be made if you experience life waaah
homosexual boomer cope. He'll burn in hell
>t.ranny
You need to participate in the rape of nanking for your art to have soul
This series is a thinly veiled pan-turkic propaganda, stop shilling it
What is this kino?
A series of anime movies that were wildly popular in Japan but pretty niche in the West. The franchise pretty much died after the 2009 3D animated reboot flopped.
Can someone give me some recommendation for something that is reminiscent of these cats posters? They look fricking awesome. Kinda reminds me of pom poko or lupin.
Felidae.
Thx
Kek i thought you were memeing at first, i forgot it was called this. I actually enjoyed this movie much more than I though I would but it felt kind of like an empty world. Idk maybe I'm tripping.
The Cat Returns.
Sherlock hound. Miyazaki worked on it a little too.
Furgays we eating good tonigh
Reminder that this one almost kill Rich Evans with laughter.
I’ve watched that. It shamelessly uses the TCOI branding on the packing, but the movie itself has no connection to the series.
Was it even an actual Chrome Lords movie or just some Latin American ripoff?
the cats of istanbul is kino, best animated movies ever made
Could we realistically make these movies real?
no
>dude remember those heckin wholesome stray cats what if there was a le wholesome 80s cartoon about them!!!
enough with this slop please.
>what if X thing but Y
this is the maximum creative output of ai sloppers.
it's literally just aping ghibli style you cretin.
>its literally just aping Velasquez style you cretin
I unironically think making abibi the main character was a mistake
>everybody keeps forgetting about the Black person Man cameo in Americats
Honestly it was one of the only good parts.
is this that mouse movie made by the land before time guy?
he's made a couple mouse movies
How long until these programs are sentient and plot to kill us? Just end it already please.
Can't wait for when in like 5 years every random hobbyist groups, working from a garage will be able to generate entire studio-grade animated and live-action movies in weeks. 99% will be slop, but the gemeralds will be worth it.
God I love these things.
I prefer the REAL Cats of Istanbul
Mamoru Oshii's:「キングオブザヒル」- "KING OF THE HILL"
© MIKE JUDGE x MAMORU OSHII x KING OF THE HILL PROJECT®
I will make this movie, I dont care if it takes 2 years or 10 years I will make it. Screencap this.
Do you think Cats 7 had any potential to be good had they not cancelled it?
the few images that got leaked did look kino
can’t believe they cancelled it in favor of that CG slop
>the original VA for Abib passed away two years ago
;-;
vax status?
Goddamn this one almost perfect. If it weren't for the pattern on the shirt and jacket material I'd think it was real.
IMO Phil Hartman in the dub was better. Y'know his role as Abib is actually why Disney got him to voice Jiji
Very good thred and the right way to AI post imo
That’s because there’s some imagination involved. Other DALL-E threads are just coomposting or remixing existing IPs.
Why is Cinemaphile so good at pitching movies? This is like the goat and crow australian road trip movie, or the guy who wrote an entire bond script, and those weren't even AI.
You’re bound to find a couple of creative people here.
Anyone done one for 'The Anvil Hoarder' yet?
Meep meep
Anyone else a fan of the bureau-cat comic? I own every issue.
thread made me remember this, anyone else watched it as a kid?
Is the cat of Istanbul muslim?
How do we feel about this rip off?
>le meme doggo
Soulless
demonic
Its been a while since we had a fun thread like this on Cinemaphile
>Cats of Istanbul
It’s Tōyō no neko-tachi, you plebs.
Pixar remake
ding
>remove Abib’s origin story
>he gets his fez from some dog
Frick this movie
>a series that literally doesn’t exist gets more enthusiasm than Hollywood slop
just don't be ugly
Its over Mousebros!
Did you know Abib has a statue in Istanbul?
I nominate this for the comfiest thread of the year.
had Istanbul won the candidacy for the 96 olympics Abib would've been the mascot
The combination of cats, humans and humanoid cats in these movies always triggered my autism so I couldn't even watch them as a kid
Shit is fricked.
>inb4 just turn your brain off and consoom
>no indian chapter
bitch
The artists explored some ideas but following the backlash to Temple of Doom it was decided that Abib would not be traveling to India.
There was a whole sequence set in India planned for Cats 4, but they had to scrap it. Which is also why the movie was such a mess.
Based schizo, dubs confirm. Tell us more of this Studio Splatter.
>Over the Hedge 2000
Bruh how did they not sue Dreamworks?
Not to mention it's leagues more faithful to the comics than DW
You can now make great posters for it
Why would COI remind you of some homosexual shit you made up?
>Studio Splatter
What's their magnum opus?
When I think about cats, I think about the Miyazaki one.
>Cat
>just Cat
Myazaki is a fricking HACK!
No more Mr. nice cat
someone took a gen from here and made kino
Best movie about the great Chinese famie
Frankly my dear, I don't give a chang
This movie fricking mogs Grave of the Fireflies. Don't get me wrong, great movie, but this is something else entirely. Unironically had me sobbing at the end.
I want to FRICK Chu
>bring back Cats of Istanbul in 2023
>it's a 3d flick about Abib moving to Germany and facing discrimination
It's so tiresome.
is it possible to make wallpapers with these posters?
why not?
well someone should
picrel makes me feel sad and empty inside
Same energy
They really whitewashed him.
Remember when he was on Ottoman propaganda posters?
this ai shit would've been incredible for me as a kid. I'm too mundane to make use of creative stuff now.
good night thread
t. OP
Kudos for only worthwhile AI thread in months. You're not like the other sloppers shitting up the board at the moment. Godspeed you, OP.
Gonna remember this thread for the rest of my life space cowboys.
This shit is incredible. Can't wait to see what the next few years of AI generation will bring. Very kino shots, reminds me of the cartoons of my youth.
Thanks anons.
Any pictures of Abib's feet?
Not like in a weird way or anything, I just thinkin bout them beans
