the 50s shit was added by bethesda much later when they decided to manhandle the IP. the actual point of fallout is to make fun of and pay tribute to various sci fi & pop culture tropes, like another anon said already in this thread. before fallout 3 there was no indication that the pre-nuclear past was some kind of retro-future parody setting. not a bad touch but it definitely wasn't always the intention.
I think the core of Fallout still takes most of it tropes from 40's/50's stuff, the intros to F1 and F2 shows that very well. But you see a lot of things from different decades like art deco buildings and these prototype bullpup guns from the 70's/80's for example
I thought it was fine for mole rats since they were easy to kill and it balanced itself out. Plus the noises they'd make when you kill them were satisfying. Radscorpions doing it too for some reason just sucked. FO3 is trash but generally the best starting point as it establishes the core features and lore points in the game quite well while it's not as preventive as 1&2. New Vegas is easily the best pf the 3D games, try to ignore the obnoxious hardcore FO3 contrarians. FO4 is the most modern and high intensity combat focused of them. Great exploration and base building/customization, but lacking interesting story, characters and RPG elements. FO76 is FO4 but online and therefor shit.

The entire core concept of Fallout is what people in the 1950's thought radiation did, which is that it made ordinary animals into much larger aggressive mutant versions of themselves.
the 50s shit was added by bethesda much later when they decided to manhandle the IP. the actual point of fallout is to make fun of and pay tribute to various sci fi & pop culture tropes, like another anon said already in this thread. before fallout 3 there was no indication that the pre-nuclear past was some kind of retro-future parody setting. not a bad touch but it definitely wasn't always the intention.
I think the core of Fallout still takes most of it tropes from 40's/50's stuff, the intros to F1 and F2 shows that very well. But you see a lot of things from different decades like art deco buildings and these prototype bullpup guns from the 70's/80's for example

I thought it was fine for mole rats since they were easy to kill and it balanced itself out. Plus the noises they'd make when you kill them were satisfying. Radscorpions doing it too for some reason just sucked. They have way more health, in addition to doing a lot of poison damage, so them burrowing on top of that just made them a pain in the ass and anti-fun.

Great exploration and base building/customization, but lacking interesting story, characters and RPG elements. FO76 is FO4 but online and therefor shit.

It might have been a massive leap forward technically, hell I enjoyed Fallout 3, but it was definitely NOT true to "all the source stuff", and saying something like that reveals what a massive fricking homosexual you are for pretending to have played F1 & F2 and when you haven't. Almost NOTHING makes sense lorewise in Fallout 3, and it simply pretended that the earlier games never existed in the first place. The worldbuilding of F3 is like a cheap fanfiction of the original Fallouts.
Oh, how I long for the days when the Fallout franchise would have been allowed a dignified demise. In my eyes, it practically breathed its last with Fallout 2. Now, it's almost a tragic comedy watching them repeatedly exhume what's left of it, desperately attempting resuscitation, and then, with a flourish, presenting this... this necromantic puppet show as a 'brand new yet quintessentially Fallout experience.'
