It's usually sex scenes that don't further the plot, and make half the audience uncomfortable so yeah I don't blame them.
One of my best teachers in school was playing a film with a minor love arc in it, but being school appropriate did not have sex scenes. He paused the movie to ask if the love characters were having sex. The class unanimously said no, because there was none portrayed. Wrong answer, he said. Of course they're having sex! It's just not necessary to show it. This was teaching us to read between the lines, to pay attention to detail and nuance.

I think you either go all the way, like Betty Blue, or none at all. In a real relationship the two people are constantly horny for each other, especially at the beginning. If you want to show them being horny then they should constantly be grabbing at each other, they should be naked around each other, they should be fricking every day. Hollywood sex scenes are stupid. Lights off, under the covers, she keeps her shirt on. It's boring as hell.

Tolkien spent years struggling with the morality of his own setting and being unable to cope with ideas like orc being inherently evil creatures created by a demonic force. Going through a succession of retcons where he changed their origin story to better fit his pastoral Catholicism.

Tolkien did not like the idea of an evil force being able to create.
First, it disparages the power of creation from being something that only good can do. Only good can make something new. Evil can only twist and corrupt.
And beyond that, within his Catholic world view, you're opening the door to Gnosticism. Where if one evil 'god' can create, what is stopping another? All the way up to the question of 'is this world the product of an evil god'?
There is a reason that most Christian denominations claim that demons and the devil cannot make new things.

The most annoying thing about GRRM is his realist pretence while his understanding of the world and human psychology is that of a teenager who just recently read Nietzsche and Machiavelli

        Anonymous

The annoying thing about him is that anyone that is villainous (because there are obvious villains) has plot armor as thick as a brick wall, and anyone that is heroic (because there are obvious heroes) gets killed for bumping into someone on the street.
And his precious author's pets like Tyrion, Daenerys, and Cercie, are so obviously going to make it to the end that it kills all the tension.
He is uneven handed to a great degree despite the facade.

The operative element there is how bullies exert effort to navigate and manipulate the system to avoid getting in trouble and their victims think the world will recognize who’s in the right/wrong

            Anonymous

The problem there is that he has a setting where all the bullies never get in each other's ways and exist simply to be villainous towards the heroes.
Reality is that actual systems where everyone is a bully turn into mass melees of backstabbing. Like Late Byzantium.
Where someone like Cercie would have been killed by a scribe years ago over some petty grudge. Tywin wouldn't have gotten killed in a climactic moment where he dies covered in shit, but would have died to being poisoned by some ambitious provincial lord.

GRRM isn't appealing to realism even in your system.

      >The world is full of corrupt government officials and politicians who are consistently and relentlessly fricking over the entire world for the sake of their rich donors
      >Social media and the internet makes it incredibly blatant and easy to see, along with the almost complete lack of any consequences
"why are modern writers so depressed and nihilistic tho?"

It's just trending. Over time, things ebb and flow. In the 80s high concept movies with easily defined good and evil were very popular in stark contrast to the 70s where gritty crime movies and character studies with much more ambiguous grey area were the norm. Lord of the Rings movies were hugely popular with their clearly defined good and evil, and so was the Game of Thrones show with its morally grey characters.

I didn't save the screenshot, but an anon here posted an analysis of ASOIAF about how towards the end it was going to show that actually traditional morality is indeed best
    >Circe's mercenary realpolitik allows her to easily TAKE power, but it becomes precarious because you're too busy looking for daggers in the back to lead
    >Meanwhile Ned inspires loyalty innanorf years after his death, and despite his bannermen suffering heavy losses because he demonstrates that loyalty will be answered in kind
    >Arya's tale of vengeance isn't a YASS KWEEN SLAY story of badassery, it's a tragedy of a broken girl who recites the names of those who have wronged her like a prayer, and is unable to make friends; slowly losing her humanity until she is literally "no one"
    >The Boltons and Freys, like the Lannisters, make short-term gains through treachery, but quickly find themselves ostracized from their honorable neighbors
    >Dany is a straight example that royal blood alone doesn't give you the right to rule, given she does a renegade interrupt at every single occasion, showing little regard for the wreckage she leaves in her wake, alienating her advisors until she's all alone
There's more but I forgot. Anyway, I thought it was an ACTUAL subversion of expectations like everyone wants to do, rather than the "what would everyone least expect right now?" subversion that DnD did.

When a contrarian teen says this it's not an insult. You are just putting medals on my chest.

Tradition is just a guise to wear for those that can't make anything new themselves.
It is a childish way of thinking that is a replication of a toddler looking to mommy and daddy to explain how the world works.
But eventually you learn that mom and dad are imperfect people who are wrong about stuff as much as they are right. But in your panic you instead start thinking that if they're wrong about stuff, assuredly those in the past were always correct.

                Learn to be an individual.

Dismissing concept like truth, good, beauty and similar things that we spent millennia trying to define, isn't "making new stuff".
And teenage contempt isn't "being an individual" Everyone were like you are now for few years, before growing up

It is entirely possible to deduce how electricity works from basic principles and then apply it.
I had to build and power a small motor in science class in high school. Therefore I can deduce how a washing machine works independent of any prior documentation on electricity.

Asoiaf did have clear morality though: if you cucked other characters you got slaughtered.
That targaryen guy who cucked robert? Chest crushed with a hammer.
Catelyn stark cucked littlefinger along with Ned. Both got brutally executed.
Tyrion's male relatives constantly subjected him to sexual humiliation. All dead.
Yas qwain slay cucked several men playing 'I'm a strong woman grrr' and every c**t and simp in the country bought into it only for her to go psycho and by extension make them look psycho.
