Didio has nothing against Dick. He was just correct about the fact that Dick didn’t do anything beyond being a famous former sidekick and Didio was a firm believer that if you have a book it should actually matter in a way rather than “ well people buy it”

      >Didio was a firm believer that if you have a book it should actually matter

Like all the cancel fodder that we had for New 52 like Captain Atom, Dark Knight, Batwing, Blackhawks, Hawk & Dove, Grifter, JLI, Legion Lost, etc. That bald frick even admits he padded out the line to get to 52 titles.

It's definitely hilarious that you think Didio follows his own rules when it's pretty clear he makes this shit up as he goes to go after characters that he hated like Wally, Dick, Cass, Steph, etc.

Those books were all catering to different people during a launch where they were trying to offer something to everyone.

And the logic also applies to Steph and Wally. What does Wally offer that Barry doesn’t, nothing except certain demographic grew up with him as a Flash. Steph was a female sidekick to a sidekick.

Most of these books had no audience.

          Captain Atom lasted 13 issues.
          Blackhawks lasted 8 issues
Hawk & Dove lasted 8 issues
          Grifter lasted 17 issues.
          JLI lasted 12 issues

The only ones that lasted past 18 were Batman related titles like Batwing/Dark Knight aka the only thing that sells at DC.

The entire young heroes/sidekick editorial line for example was liquidated post-New 52 because of nonexistent sales.

Again by Didio's own standards, Nightwing had more of a right to be there than the goyslop that was the majority of New 52.

The fact these titles got canned so fast just shows how fast these book fell saleswise.

          >What does Wally offer that Barry doesn’t

Wally has a family, you dunce.

You know nothing about comics and like the rest of Cinemaphile, you don't read them. You are here to whiteknight whatever dengerate DEI politics, you support.

Character development, a family, a personality, years of good stories.

          >but the actual long term plot/meta for the DCU going forward was Williamson's ideas
Why didn’t they go to someone like Tomasi instead?

Tomasi is only interested in writing about little boys.

If you're running a business then "well people buy it" is literally the only reason you need to have a book, and if you're a writer then you start from there and give people an extra reason to keep buying. Failing to do so is just Didio admitting he's a failure as both a creative and executive.

I mean yeah Didio was mostly a failure. His biggest successes were Identity Crisis, the Green Lantern expansion, and new 52.

        >new 52 collapsed after 3-4 years with DCYou being a massive failure
        >rebirth collapsed within 18 months (bringing down the then-still-steady new 52 trade sales with it)
        >Green Lantern collapsed back to one book within 5 years of Johns leaving.
        >all the books he played nice with because he thought they would make good adaptations all sold like shit (Jonah Hex, Manhunter, Blue Beetle, etc)
        >Superman collapsing from 4 to 2 titles
        >taking steady selling/decent books/characters with sizeable fanbases and chunking them into limbo because of personal biases (Flash twice, JSA, JLI characters minus Booster and Guy, Cass/Steph, etc).

Didio is like half the reason DC is in the crapper right now. He destroyed what people like Kahn, Berger, Giordano, etc had built up over the years because of some childish rage over CoiE. And once he got fired for all the horrible shit he did, the whole rickety structure collapsed on itself.

Probably the worst comic exec if not for Jim Lee and Bob Harras existing.

Didn't his book win its first Eisner award? So it seems to be doing well.

It is. Dick is headlining two top titles in Nightwing and Titans while featuring regularly in Batman and World's Finest. He was the main character in Dark Crisis and a major character in Beast World, two of the last 6 major events DC has published.
Only a moron wouldn't see the change in how the character is being treated post-Didio.

        >Only a moron wouldn't see the change in how the character is being treated post-Didio.
I hate it because within the DC universe Dick has always been held in high esteem by his peers for his work as Robin and Nightwing, but in comes the post-DiDio crew who him in these terrible events as a way of saying “see, unlike DiDio we get Dick Grayson.”

Wait, are we talking about how Dick is treated in-universe or how he's treated by the DC Comics editorial? OP was talking about the old EIC.

I believe the comic would get stronger sales if every issue featured at least 3 pages showing Dick's squishy cheeks getting plowed by the female character in explicit detail.

I’m just realizing they’re giving Dick the same push Hal Jordan got in the mid-2000s and all he has to show for it is Dark Crisis, Titans and his run.

They aren't even pushing Dick half as much as they did Hal in the Johns era of writing him.

Because Hal sold extremely well. SCW was the only highlight during Countdown when Didio was shooting blanks with "52 done right". And DC with Blackest Night actually kicked the shit out of Marvel for once sales wise. So yes they pushed Hal becase he was a golden goose under Johns.

It was in part because they were trying to set up Hal for their live action movies, which ended up bombing.

          Infinite Frontier in early/mid 2021.
There were some lingering ideas from 5G that DC tried to salvage like Magistrate in some of the batbooks and some 5G leftovers having books like Yara, Jackson, and Jace, but the actual long term plot/meta for the DCU going forward was Williamson's ideas and by 2022 most of the 5G shit was cancelled or close to it.

Nobody else wanted to do it. That was the time WB/AT&T and COVID started cutting DC into bits.

Williamson himself almost left DC until they offered him the architect role.

Honestly learning about DC’s state in the early 2020s is more interesting than actually reading the stuff they put out at the same time.

Armageddon? Amazon's Attack? Remember Cry for Justice? Event Leviathan?
Dark Crisis was bad, but these were bad and damaging to the line as a whole.

To me he's interesting as a reflection of Batman, and Batman is interesting in reflection off him. Nightwing is what happens if you give Batman responsibility for an 8 year old kid and let him raise this boy into adulthood. I love everything about it.
