No, we see one corpse. First in Angier’s office - examined by cutter (while there is a man doing prosthetic work in the background). Secondly, in the last shot, we see one in the tanks. The rest of the tanks are not clear. It is however cut between the arrays of hats - implying - there are corpses in the tanks.

        the machine works.
        >borden sees 'angier' drown, gets arrested for it
        >cutter IDs the body in the morgue
        >cutter then goes to lord caldlow's house to beg him to destroy the machine
        >sees caldlow is angier, angrily asks 'how are you alive? i saw you on a slab for christ sake!'
        >cutter visits borden in prison, he reveals his twin, they hatch their plan to stop angier
        >one of the borden brothers follows angler's blind stagehands
        >the other is executed in prison
        >borden confronts angier amidst the water tanks and shoots him
        >final shot shows a dying angier
        >camera pulls back to reveal another dead angier floating in one of the tanks
        >three dead angiers: one in the morgue, one floating dead in the tank, one dying on the floor of a gunshot wound. every single one of these scenes takes place AFTER the diary reveals, meaning none of these scenes have an 'unreliable narrator' or whatever. three dead anglers, the machine works.

Cutter ID’s him in the office with big windows he and Angie’s picked for the Great Danton project.

that's weird and i've never noticed that before, but the fact remains that cutter discovers angier = caldlow after IDing the body, which gives us the third angier corpse, which proves the machine works

If Nolan has ever read this "fake machine" theory before I'm sure he was baffled by it.

Root meeting Angier is presented from his fake journal. Different nose, but it could just be prosthetics (that they work on in Angiers office)

You don’t find it strange that Root looks exactly like Angier?

                Anonymous

one of the corpses could definitely be Root, in fact it would make perfect sense for angier to want revenge on him and also to tie up that loose end. assuming Root is one of the corpses, the other corpse is still a clone, meaning the machine still works.

                Anonymous

Here’s also an idea. What if Root actually is Angier’s twin? It would make sense considering Angier is aware of how much Borden would sacrifice - telling ScarJo Borden’s life “is the act”. He might have been projecting?

Impressive how far some will try to reach out to delusions just to refuse that the machine works.

Ah yes, since repeating patterns of foreshadowing isn’t part of the whole structure of the narrative. The first scene is Caine showing the bird trick (before it is explained) overdubbed - telling one that one doesn’t look close enough. Conceit makes one think that the bird trick is a red herring from that point on.

Also, would Nolan really be that lazy to put Jackman play a random replica of himself that Olivia would know? Strange.

Machine was real in the book. Not sure why it can't be in the movie.

How is this certain? I’ve read that Angier’s relatives actually - see - the corpses of the clones?
You certain it doesn’t follow the same ambiguity?

The end of the movie only makes sense if the entire thing is a put-on. SPECIFICALLY to fool Borden. Angier couldn't fricking stand that Borden is a better *magician* than him. Sure he's the better showman, but the entire movie was about him stealing Borden's trick, Borden spotting how the Chinese magician does the fishbowl trick etc. To truely prove he's better, Angier must *make it real* for Borden. Make him believe in magic. Tesla fooled Angier himself and bilked him of money using the fancy machine with electrical bells and whistles and a bunch of top hats. So, Angier figures he can run the same act on Borden. The blind stage hands and only 100 show run were all beckoning Borden to have to see backstage. The rest is just him killing root, finding another double and putting a bunch of wax dummies in the water tanks. It's just more and more and more elaborate window dressing on the same trick until even *Borden* questions if it is real. Because that's the ultimate goal: make the audience wonder, if only just for a second. If the machine actually worked, then the whole point of the movie and Angier's final speech would be completely lost.

I disagree. When I wrote "I mean, we did see the clones" my goal was to banter, but this a context where banter is pointless. In reality, I wanted to write "Your point is moot when we saw several of the clones' cadavers", but I didn't want to come off as rigid. Upon examination, this exposes I'm more concerned about the form than the content, which goes against the spirit of an anonymous imageboard and proves I've been infected with the cancer that has consumed this website. Anon claimed people that partake like this should be enslaved, but we already are: enslaved by a culture that isn't ours.

I refuse to stay in these shackles now that they have been pointed out to me.

there used to be a vocal group of people i'd face off with here over the years who were so convinced the machine didn't work, that they would resort to saying moronic things like 'the angier bodies were wax dummies floating in the tanks at the end', or 'you can't trust what you see in that scene because angier is reading it from cutter's diary so he's intentionally lying' etc. all the scenes i greentexted are not being relayed to another character via diary, it's what Nolan is presenting to us straight forward on screen.
