It's more clear that James' 'golden age' of video games was Atari/Intellivision and the NES. Once you hit the SNES it peters off into when he developed actually hobbies, and beyond that (or any Sega, PC Engine, PC in general, etc.) is out of his scope for what makes AVGN feel "genuine".
AVGN stopped feeling genuine around the time he did that Nintendo Power episode. Felt like it was the last of stuff he was truly there for in a big way- not to say the stuff past it wasn't funny, just that he was obviously scripted and had more knowledge fed to him.

The reason is that he's been playing a character he wrote as a one off for over 20 years, long past the point where he finds that either ideal or even fun in regards to AVGN. He has to say it's fun and that he likes doing it because it's his job, but nobody, especially actual creatives, likes doing that.
Tangently related, another youtuber I used to talk to on and off again did a show making fun of creepypasta. Started as a thing where he fricked around with friends, then became a way to branch out and meet people, form communities, and now he's a decade down the line getting comments on shit he actually wants to do with "When's the next episode?" It fricking sucks to have things you probably want to actually do, and to end up just doing the same shit constantly, especially when that shit is ostensibly a creative medium.
This isn't to say "feel bad for James", as he could quit whenever he wanted to. Sure, he'd have no income and would need to start flipping burgers fast, but he could. This is moreso the reason why he may seem depressed.
There's also obvious other factors. Guy is 40, AVGN was a character he made in his youth (20s if your youth, I'm sorry if you're a high school dropout lamenting your wasted youth, you're still in it), and Monster Madness was something equally focused on his nostalgia. He can do snappy videos about this shit because he knows it- Hammer Horror, Halloween, classic Atari games, etc.
But, that well ran dry on both ends. So, he's just talking about stuff in a more casual way because he's the casual now. It's why his best video in the past 10 years was the comparing Dracula adaptations one.

It's hard to focus on your work or find TIME when April refuses to watch the kids. Imagine having two screaming autistic children running around and kicking shit over when you're trying to record yourself playing old shitty games. Doesn't help either to know April is out with the bull, makes it even harder to concentrate when your mind wanders to that inbetween your kids' tard rages and tantrums.
The reason is that he's been playing a character he wrote as a one off for over 20 years, long past the point where he finds that either ideal or even fun in regards to AVGN. He has to say it's fun and that he likes doing it because it's his job, but nobody, especially actual creatives, likes doing that.
Tangently related, another youtuber I used to talk to on and off again did a show making fun of creepypasta. Started as a thing where he fricked around with friends, then became a way to branch out and meet people, form communities, and now he's a decade down the line getting comments on shit he actually wants to do with "When's the next episode?" It fricking sucks to have things you probably want to actually do, and to end up just doing the same shit constantly, especially when that shit is ostensibly a creative medium.
This isn't to say "feel bad for James", as he could quit whenever he wanted to. Sure, he'd have no income and would need to start flipping burgers fast, but he could. This is moreso the reason why he may seem depressed.
There's also obvious other factors. Guy is 40, AVGN was a character he made in his youth (20s if your youth, I'm sorry if you're a high school dropout lamenting your wasted youth, you're still in it), and Monster Madness was something equally focused on his nostalgia. He can do snappy videos about this shit because he knows it- Hammer Horror, Halloween, classic Atari games, etc.
But, that well ran dry on both ends. So, he's just talking about stuff in a more casual way because he's the casual now. It's why his best video in the past 10 years was the comparing Dracula adaptations one.

Being an adult is realizing that he was never a good critic and the charm of monster madness was his enthusiasm, even if he didn't know what he was talking about.
It's actually interesting to think about. He used to have passion, enthusiasm and charisma. He was always moronic but we didn't even notice at the time because he was charming. Only once he became a lazy, flippant dickhead plagiarist did people start to notice his autism.
I would notice a few things here and there. He would miss themes or get some details wrong about a movie I already saw, but like you said it didn't matter because he was charismatic enough and talked about movies I hadn't seen yet or would be enthusiastic about movies I did like. But like everything else he got lazy about it.
