Its complicated. It depends on your tv set up. There was a big conversation in the last thread about current home televisions and the way they process digital images.

The gist of it is you need a good tv to really appreciate the movie. And if your television is shit the movie can look like shit and even make the acting look like shit. It's complicated and seems a bit bonkers but its true. It watched this movie twice on two different tv's.

Yeah no shit. TVs will always look different from each other if not calibrated perfectly, and even then they will differ depending on whether they're LCD, OLED or whatever.

It's just where they copied the styles for the characters.

        The movie is
        >farm gets attacked
        >we need rebels to helps us defend
        >cantina scene to get guy to get more guys
        >mindless talk inbetween locations
        >scene with beastmaster who's skills never come up again (he's a meleegay against people with automatic laser rifles and spaceships)
        >elevator conversation with co-worker tier dialogue to next planet
        >scene with samurai lady who's skills never come up again (she's a meleegay against people with automatic laser rifles and spaceships)
        >melodramatic dialogue while going to next planet
        >scene with dirty general getting a bath
        >i don't even know what skills he has, at least he shoots a gun
        >more melodramatic dialogue while, plot twist, the guy comes to them this time
        >they still had to go to another planet first though
        >rebels finally join the movie
        >but only like 4 of them
        >traitor indirectly tells protagonist he's gonna betray them
        >next scene he does exactly that
        >big end fight with boss
        >boss dies but so do 3 out of the 4 rebels
        >lets go back to the farm I guess
        >oh we kept using the robot with that headdress in all our promotional material
        >yeah, there he is in a field holding a stick for 10 seconds
        >fin

I really don't know why we needed so many slow-mo shots of the guy taming the bird if they're just gonna abandon it there. None of this would really matter if the action scenes weren't so mindnumbingly dull. Cause when they stop fighting they start talking and that's even worse.

          >>i don't even know what skills he has, at least he shoots a gun
Apparently he's a super genius general but we never see him do anything related to strategy or tactics, either because the other character introductions took way too long or they're saving it for the next film. Either way, shit characterization.

Hell yes absofricking-lutely. Outside of some slightly cringe looking bounty hunters Jupiter Ascending is a phenominal looking movie that is easily better than 90 percent of the Disney dominated crap we get thise days in theaters.

Some of the visuals were just too much for my eyes. Similar to Marvel, it was one or two actors and computer cartoon everything else. I will say the building at the beginning was pretty great looking, though. Mila's dresses were incredible. And that page was hilarious. But overall, it was underwhelming.

I like the Terry Gilliam moments at the space DMV. Lots of things to like about the movie. It might have been overlooked because it was middle of the pack when it came out. But its definitely better than most of the stuff coming out today.

Yeah, I'll give it that. I couldn't remember Terry's name, but yeah, the page. I really enjoyed that sequence. It felt authentic, too.

This is 1000% a real question. Are you gay, trans, or super into pegging?

It's a weird film in that to a lot of people it really sucks, but if you fall into the aforementioned categories it hits close enough to enough fetishes that it elevates the film in all the right ways to make it fricking awesome. If you're like a normal nerd, you'll probably hate it. If you're trans though this shit will hit like fricking heroin.

          Anonymous

          >Jupiter Ascending is for trannies.

Absolute fucing lies. Literally nothing pozzed about the movie. The main hero is a super badass straight white guy. There's an honest to goodness damsel in distress that he has to rescue. No girlboss moments because she's a chick. She's a normal chick that can't fight and has to get rescued by the hero.

Also the movie looks great and the orchestral score is GOD TIER.

            Anonymous

The "main character" is literally Mila Kunis, a boring maid that finds out she's secretly a magic space princess. Her "knight", Channing Tatum is a literal space elf with pointy ears that has, and I wish I was joking, "extreme" anti-gravity rollerblades and is sworn to serve Mila Kunis. At it's core it's a YA teen romance like Twilight draped in scifi splendor. Hence: if you're gay, trans, or super into pegging it's awesome. Otherwise it's a weird really cringey mess.

Look, Jupiter Ascending is a movie that two 50 year old troony's both agreed was their dream project, an realization of their perfect fantasy. As such, there's genderbending stuff all over the film. The costume design often skews queer, the characters are designed in ways that challenge gender norms while embracing old scifi/fantasy character tropes and stereotypes. The "cool" female characters share that particular female-centric male-gaze feminism that verges on fetishization (Kunis is literally the queen bee) while the male characters are either sexless background noise or genderqueer frickbois. Redmane as the feminine power bottom and Tatum as the clubboi masculine restrained sub top. The concept of Kunis toiling away as a "lowly" maid while secretly being a pureblood princess speaks to the Disney princess fantasy of genderqueer/gender confused men who can only imagine femininity as an outsider looking in.

It's pure troony kino. There's nothing at all wrong with it, but it won't be for everyone.

WHITE GUYS ARE EVIL, POCs ARE GOOD: THE MOVIE

How many times are they gonna keep making this movie over and over?

The real bad guys aren't even white. The white king was slain by mutts he invited to his military and close personal circle. Every general shown other than Noble are some sort of Latino.

The theme the movie is going for, and this will become more apparent in the director's cut, is that expansionism and multiculturalism is a mixed bag because it dilutes the culture and identity of people, creating resentment and strife. The old king was slain by people from off-world that he tried to assimilate and befriend, Kora finds peace in a monocultural village where life is simple and its people have a strong connection to its land, several of the characters are people that lost their home and culture and are aimless.

If you are a Snyderchad with a decent televison setup at home its definitely worth a watch. If you are low test with near life or death opinions about curtain colors and the current price of lube then you might not like it.

    I just finished watching it.

    This movie was like a re-edited mini-series.
The designs of weapons and mechanics are very mediocre.
There's a cool colosseum, but no gladiator battles.
Honestly, even as a mindless sci-fi action movie, it's boring.

You seem to be confused about why streaming services finance projects on a basic level.

They do it to capture demographics. They essentially just put in effort to have a show/movie in every possible genre and key demographic to cover all bases, that's how they get people to subscribe. If they don't cover something, they will finance a project that takes care of that. These projects just need to be perfunctory, not actually competent. Essentially they want all bases covered.
This just covers an audience of Snyder fanboys, who also keep advertising this project within their own group and making a "snyder cut" is free publicity and it keeps these fans buzzing about it for free and continuously.
Even now everyone is pretending that the "snyder cut" is going to fix things, so they're going to watch every iteration of this slop and keep blabbing about it too.

Reminder that this movie is actually about Islam and the honorable fight that our brothers from Hamas are striking against the great Serpent that is Israel.

There is an Islamic belief that Isa (Jesus Christ peace be upon him) breathed into a clay bird and with God's permission gave life to the bird. In Rebel Moon a character called Princess Issa is seen giving life to a dead bird. Reference or coincidence?

    It's shockingly stupid and bland.
I can't believe Snyder was trying to hype this up as his passion project.

It's not even campy or shlocky enough to be a fun watch.
Here's a breakdown of the first half hour :

    >we are poor but fair peasants toiling to cultivate some grain, look at our completely peaceful life (this goes on for 10 minutes with people only communicating in stock lines), also featuring Corey Stoll who I'm not sure even took the role seriously
    >there's also some sort of a main guy who is even more of a cuck than James Marsden, if that is even at all possible
    >evil space nazis show up by just like ... appearing in the sky
    >everyone gasps and a huge bell is rang as everyone just stands around passively (this goes on for 5+ minutes)
    >the bad guys show up in some generic smaller space ships and then disembark and walk around (this takes 5+ minutes)
    >now for the next 15 minutes, the main nazi guy does the "we're your friends" routine that just keeps going on and on and on and on until he eventually of course kills Corey Stoll
    >then some afrikaaners bully the Hopkins robot for another 10 minutes

Every fricking thing in this movie takes FOREVER. Even simple interactions between people have them slip into some NPC stock dialogue that goes on forever while conveying absolutely nothing that one or two lines couldn't do. Every character is like this.
Evil space nazi soldiers literally speak out loud everything they're doing as they do it "oh look at this hot chick over there that you, the other soldier, likes. what if I raper her right here and now while everyone else watches and then I keep raping her and then maybe I kill you later or maybe not, what do you say? hmmm? okay I'm going to place her onto the ground and start raping her oh NO my superior officer just arrived!! ahaha I'm the superior officer and I think I'll rape this girl right there as well!!!"

    Everyone fricking talks like that.

    >“They’re all misfits,” Snyder says. “They’re all healing and finding a place to belong. It’s a movie about finding a family.” In fact, the director, whose previous blockbusters include 300 and Man of Steel, continues by teasing a scene where Kora and her teammates look upon Veldt and agree that the moon is so beautiful that it’s worth dying on — or fighting hard enough to live upon. “That’s really at the heart of the movie in a lot of ways: Kora finding a place to call home, something that she wants to protect.”
    >According to Dechant, the film “is a battle between brutality and harmony.” As Admiral Noble ominously traverses the galaxy, he brings destruction to civilizations and entire worlds. Veldt contrasts the nihilism of the Imperium with its kindness and integration with nature. It’s a “place worth fighting for,” Dechant explained.

This movie is literally about Gaza.

None of this was in the film. It's just empty talk. Snyder does this a lot actually. He blabbers on about the supposed details and motivations and absolutely none of it is in his film, it's all just "this is how it is, so like, react like it was actually here ok"? Like Gunn might say that about his GOTG films....and it's true, it is about misfits finding family, that's most of the films. Snyder's characters have no character, they're just character designs and that's it.

Snyder often does that, just talks out a load of nonsense he claims is in his movie but it's nowhere to be found. He's as big a fan of "tell, don't show" as there is, the problem is he equates telling with showing...regardless of whether the telling is not even in the film, but in interviews or supplemental material. So you get him making all these claims about what the film is about or features and you wonder what movie he saw.

I’ve seen 2 out of 3 of those and they both came out way past their prime even though its source material was innovative and started some tropes we see everywhere now. Is it the same for Rebel Moon because based on the trailer it just looks like Seven Samurai in Space which is Star Wars.

      >it just looks like Seven Samurai in Space

It is literally that. Mixed with some 40k aesthetics and Star Wars beat points. If you aren't gay and like manly things like most Snyderchads you should at least be interested in checking it out.

the movie is just a bunch of tik tok clips put together
the absolute worse scene i've ever sene was in that movie
it's when they recrute that asian ninja
Nutella draws her gun and then she and all the other 20 people just stand stil and watch the asian fight the monster spider.
even when the fricking child was in danger and the white farmer, with no fighting experience at all was shielding the child, basically ending his life, no one moved.
when the asian lady was about to die, no one moved. not a single bullet was fired.
and when theasian lady killed the spider in the most stupid way possible, THEn Nutella put away her gun and everyone else started moving again.
this was just fricking bizarre and ultimately proves what a dogshit director Snyder is.

        >It makes everything look like a fake toy set, a little diorama.

THIS is what I was talking about and trying to explain to the other Anon with this post here

        From the other thread:

        >digital processing of a shitty tv will even make the acting look bad. People will say its cope but people that understand how digital tv's and post processing works will understand. Nolan understands and BEGGED people to turn off post processing before watching Tenet at home.

        >It can even effect how the viewer sees acting. But I remember being at Fry's Electronics way back in the day looking at a display television and they had Pirates of the Carriben playing on a new tv with the image post processing turned all the way up to max level. It made the whole movie look like a soap opera where you could tell that Johnny Depp was wearing a wig and you could see him "acting". Film plebs will have no idea what I am talking about but people that know know.
        ---------

        >That's called motion interpolation. What it does is that it generates extra frames between the normal frames, increasing the framerate. Looks like dogshit.
        >The added frames are calculated and put in between the original frames for a "smoother" picture. The problem is the added movement frames are not natural. They are calculated by a computer inside the television. The subconcious can sense that something is 'off' which makes you think it's the acting that is unnatural when it is really the added artificially calculated frames of movement.

Motion interpolation can thankfully be turned off in pretty much every television, but the extremely confusing part is that every single TV manufacturer has a different name for it in the picture settings.

Nah, the diorama effect is because of the shallow depth of field, caused by shooting with a lens at a T stop of T1.5

It's terrible cinematography because Snyder appoints himself in that role.
And like a teenage girl with her first SLR camera, he favors shallow depth of field over deep focus.

But then on watching...I think it was episode 4. The one where she has the duel with Bailin. I first watched it at my friends house then wen't home and watched it again on my high end 70" Sony XBR. It was like night and day. Almost like a totally different shoe. That episode with the duel looked pretty fricking amazing. I tried to turn it off. But it seems to just have this built in shitty image post processing automatically that won't go away even when you turn it off. Its a newer television. But its an entry level and it probably has a Z grade chip in it humming away processing evey image. I suspect its the same problem with a lot of newer cheap tv's that have shitty processors to save money.

But then the post processing seems to be more pronounced with these newer streaming shows like Ashoka and Rebel Moon that are shot on the latest digital cameras. It can look really good on the right tv but if its not the right tv its going to look like shit. Its like a shitty music master that only sounds good on a high end audio setup but sounds like shit on your clock radio. Really good audio masters sound good everywhere. Even on shitty equipment. I suspect its the same thing with these newer digital video content masters where they haven't mastered it for low end equipment.

I'm guessing you just didn't find the setting since all manufacturers have a different name for it. Would be easy to figure out knowing the type and model of the TV
                >But then the post processing seems to be more pronounced with these newer streaming shows like Ashoka and Rebel Moon that are shot on the latest digital cameras.
That makes zero sense. They're just video files being streamed. They don't include some magic data that enables the TV to do more post-processing.

                Anonymous

The cameras used have absolutely nothing to do with the post-processing. It's an entirely separate thing. Any video can be post-processed in awful ways no matter what camera it was captured on. Film or digital. And these large scale productions are shot as RAW video data anyway.

I've been telling you that 60fps is the bane of cinema. If only Mr Snyder made his movie in 24fps his shots wouldn't look like little kid dioramas with two-dimensional characters. 24fps adds more depth to the characters, story and background detail, which in this case is exquisitely crafted from fine corinthian space leather.

It was shot entirely in slowmo and then sped up to 4x-8x so you're basically speedwatching it on normal. Also the soft-focus effect is because each of your eyes can only see 30fps so he cleverly interpolated them so it appears to be 60fps and slightly 3d, like the 3ds. He's way ahead of everyone in the industry, except maybe Cameron.

This is literally a Star Wars treatment Snyder proposed to Lucasfilm 12 or 13 years back, that they passed on, he reworked it to be his own serial numbers filed off universe. He is open about this. Who are you trying to kid?

Nobody, but your kidding yourself if you think this is any sort of plagiarism, especially if you want to bring up starwars, which was made in the exact same way (borrowing cool shit from other people and mashing it all into a space opera).

It isn't 1976. You can't pretend Star Wars doesn't exist. It doesn't matter if Star Wars was a pastiche of Republic serials and Japanese movies. It has subsumed those sources. If you have a Star Wars project you propose to Lucasfilm, then rework into your own universe, but keep a character having glowing swords that cut through anything, they are going to be compared to lightsabers.

I like it in concept but not really in execution.
The characters are completely non existent, the plot moves too fast to get to the end. It feels like it was a movie that was made from a bunch of cut up episodes of some miniseries or something.
I like the set design though

The cutting and obvious skips in narrative is a little jarring, especially once they leave the first planet. But after reading the endless kvetching and seething here for two days before watching it, I was pleasantly surprised by how little it bothered me. I was expecting a total clusterfrick shitshow like Suckerpunch but wound up enjoying it more than maybe any of his other films besides maybe 300 on first watch. It helps casting an extremely frickable lead actress who isn’t spiritually and psychologically repulsive like Brie Larson. If this is the shitty cut, the R rated extended cut is going to be absolute kino.

I think it would work much better as a miniseries, we could take the time to know the characters and maybe see some more adventures, this way we get like three minutes to show each new character and then they get shunted off to the background.
Like that prince dude who can talk to animals or whatever, that's shown once and then he gets like three lines of dialogue in the entire rest of the movie.

          Anonymous

          >better as a miniseries
Couldn’t agree more. It’s very clear there’s a tremendous amount of context cut out. I have a feeling the full cut will be a similar improvement from Whedons Justice League to the Snyder cut. But at this point in current year soulless Hollywood goyslop, I’ll take what we can get.

            Anonymous

            >I have a feeling the full cut will be a similar improvement from Whedons Justice League to the Snyder cut
That's literally a different movie. This at best is going to be BvS's ultimate edition, where the plot is a little less scattershot and sliced up, but it didn't fix BvS's fundamental problems of an awful and pretentious script and a dire third act. It won't fix this movie's central problems of ugly camerawork, bad acting and a deeply unoriginal fantasy world. In fact Snyder's claimed that besides the added violence and nudity, which were pretty obvious where they were missing, the extended cut won't even be focused on Kora the protagonist, it'll be adding in lots of scenes focused on the bad guy, the Regent. Which isn't what the movie needs, it needs its cast of characters to not be flat cardboard cutouts of concept art. The robot that was only at the start and end got more developmental than Kora's entire band of warriors. The spider monster that died in the same scene it was introduced got more development than the warrior they were recruiting in that scene.

After the final skirmish there was a big CG looking hero shot of all the surviving band lined up, exactly like his Justice League shot at the end of ZSJL, only...I don't give a shit about any of these people, so it falls hilariously flat. I don't even know half their names. It actually reminds me of Legend of the Guardians, another Snyder film that felt like it was missing half a movie in the runtime, there was a scene before the climax where they had a "you've come so far together, heroes!" scene where the group reaffirms their unity, but half of the group showed up like a scene or two earlier, it was like we missed an entire adventure with all these characters between scenes, and the movie just informed us instead that apparently they're a close knit group now.

I didn't bring up "Do you like Star Wars or do you like Rebel Moon". Your preference is not relevant. The point of discussion is whether or not those not-lightsabers are copied from lightsabers or not. What does "I don't like Star Wars film!" have to do with that discussion?

Or is it you believe all things exist in some sort of perpetual console war and you must not "surrender" a point to the other console, even if it has nothing to do with quality or preference?

You didn't compare anything. You just replied to a specific argument going "BETTER THAN LAST JEDI!!!" which has nothing to do with anything. The point being discussed is "are those glowing sci-fi swords that cut through anything copied from lightsabers?". Your opinion of a Star Wars movie is not relevant. And the answer is yes, because this is literally a repurposed Star Wars project Snyder proposed, and those swords would have been lightsabers originally.

That the movie is already full of nearly 1:1 copies of various movies and shows Snyder has seen, and having not-lightsabers left over from his Star Wars project is obnoxiously on the nose even by Snyder's standards.

It seems more like Snyder fans are seething over them being called out as being lifted from Star Wars. They're not being singled out as the reason the movie is bad. Merely an example of how deeply unoriginal the film is, not just in its world, but its story, scenes, even designs. But there's some fans who won't accept the example, they're adamant in this repurposed Star Wars project, the lightsabers are not lightsabers and definitely have nothing to do with lightsabers. As if the film is not FULL of ripoffs from other films. That's just one.
