It's obvious that the plots of the GTA franchise, especially 4 and 5 was largely inspired by Sopranos. What other examples of games do you know whose plot was inspired by television?
It's obvious that the plots of the GTA franchise, especially 4 and 5 was largely inspired by Sopranos. What other examples of games do you know whose plot was inspired by television?
Almost all of them. Video games are creatively bankrupt more often than not.
Just wait till you find out about books.
Everything steals from everything else. The fact video games existed separate from the rest of the entertainment industry with the modest ambition of being disposable toys for kids (or quarter-munchers in restaurants) means they were more shameless than most, and remain so. One comparison is maybe the direct-to-video boom, but even that doesn't quite capture it.
Most of the first video games were definitely not intended for children lol, they were played entirely on university computers
Nobody is talking about Spacewar.
>or quarter-munchers in restaurants
Are you 70 years old? Arcade games haven’t had any relevance since the early 1980s. Nobody except senile dying boomers even considers them video games. They’re the f2p mobile game slop of their generation.
>arcade games
>f2p
He didn't imply they're free to play, he compared them to the current lowest-of-the-low type of video game. Learn to read.
Do you know what a f2p mobile game is? They’re all designed around the concept of hooking players in with a free app download and then deliberately designing the gameplay to make you spend money if you want to actually enjoy the game. It’s basically the same way arcade games worked but even more insidious because they get a much large number of morons addicted before making them spend any money.
I'm not sure what your point is. Many video game series that started as arcade games--or had a critical presence in the arcade--still persist to this day, including any and every major fighting game series and fricking Mario. But my point isn't that the video game industry is the same today as it was in 1990, just that it still shows signs of what it's rooted in. At their core video games are disposable distractions for young people.
the last of us 2 and happy gilmore
Deadly Premonition borrows quite heavily from Twin Peaks.
That's right, Zack.
no wonder it sucks lmao
It's so weird cause twin peaks is way weirder than the videogame
You can't outLynch the Lynch. It's impossible
Alan Wake does too and they both fricking suck dick.
Every Kojima game, obviously. Even if you ignore the Hollywood stuff, he's used nearly every scene from Angel Cop in his games
>Angel Cop
What about every spy movie ever.
Just because you have seen an anime doesn't mean the rest of the world is also a gay virgin.
Explains why 4 and 5 sucked
don't know about 5, but 4 storytelling is a masterpiece. the way how they glued multiple plots across main game and dlcs is remarkable
It really isn't. Just having a NPC show up a couple times then write a story about them isn't good storytelling
Vice City is basically Scarface with Henry Hill
GTA 3 copies a lot from Payback
Red Faction is Total Recall
Tony has tattoos? Major loss of respect from me
Is that why GTA 5 was so shit? I kept postponing my playthrough of it until there is enough time to go for full playthrough, I was shocked how empty it was
Isn't GTA 4 inspired by the russian film Brat 2?
It definitely felt very uninspired to me
Very generic plot, lots of cutscenes and not enough gameplay to make up for it
half the story is just trevor b***hing to michael about his betrayal and that douche who dies in the prologue
max payne 3 is man on fire
red dead redemption is the wild bunch
la noire is la confidential
>max payne 3 is man on fire
My whole childhood right there. Pure kino
>red dead redemption is the wild bunch
It's The Proposition.
Movies can't stop ripping off video games these days.
It's also the Wild Bunch you stupid homosexual.
It's so much The Proposition that they paid the director to make a movie with in-game assets as a promotion.
>MUH LE WILD BUNCH
The only western you've ever watched?
You need a literal fool to not see clear parallels between Thornton and John and Pike and Dutch plus the whole washed-up gang in the perishing wild west theme that they spread over both games. Guess who's Uncle.
The Legend of Zelda is Peter Pan
Zelda A Link To The Past is The Black Cauldron
Links Awakening is The Odyssey mixed with Atlantis and other marooned lore
Wind Waker is Atlantis (2001)
Twilight Princess is beauty and the beast.
none of that is accurate
Classic Zelda is extremely Tolkeinesque. It's very apparent in OOT. I could never look at that game the same way again after reading The Hobbit, it made me appreciate it a little more
Gonna have to explain because I don’t see it at all beyond heroes journey archetypes
a lot of the wordlbuilding stuff with the sages basically being wizard avatars and the triforce
Liberty City Stories
5 is clearly a parody with micheals family. Meadow became a prostitute, AJ became even more pathetic, Carmella started cheating with everyone
Dr Melfi is also an scammer
so are all psychotherapists
true
i'd still like to frick melfi tho
4 maybe, because of the setting. but 5 i just don't see it.
GTA games heavily reference pop culture, especially those elements related to each game's respective city. you can recognize a couple of different movies and TV shows playing IV and V. they are a simulation of crime movies essentially, and that's why a GTA movie would be stupid, it's just a crime movie you've seen before
4 not really.
The mafia plot later in the game, yeah. But the whole game is about a balkan immigrant.Nothing to do with the sopranos
>nobody mentions san andreas the movie
lol no, they're completely different. San Andreas is basic hero's journey but starting as a ghetto gangsta
The last scene in SA is literally the last scene of Training Day.
I think he's referring to the antagonist cop. I can kind of see the similarities, especially the ending with him bleeding out by a vehicle.
So a scene of a guy dying by a car is enough to be "San Andreas the movie"? Come on, it's a dumb comparison.
GTA 3
I'd argue Ralphie is more similar to Ray Boccino from GTA IV
GTA 3 literally has a mobster character called Tony Cipriani that's in a constant squabble with his ma.
In Liberty City Stories his ma tries to get him whacked as well, only that Cipriani doesnt do anything about it because he's kind-off a b***h.
Nah.
it actually finishes wrapping up the diamonds plot which was unfinished from the original GTA 4.
I'd argue the only unnecesary appearance was Luis in Three Leaf Clover since it adds nothing to the story.
What's poor storytelling is the complete joke they turned Ray Bulgarin into in those DLC.
It's hard to believe that a man who was living with his sister made a war veteran ran off to another continent.
red dead is just a rip off of young guns 2
ITT: Cinemaphile finds out Dan Houser is a hack
Might and Magic
What movies will GTA 6's plot and characters be based on?
Chuck and Sneed
who cares. it won't be out for another two decades.
Natural Born Killers probably.
Throw in films like Bones and All, True Romance and Bonnie and Clyde, along with films like Baby Driver, Knight and Day and you have your generic action lovers on the run/bankrobbers story.
Florida Man twitter memes
Unironically, that's how bad writing/bankrupt for ideas R* is
also Bonnie and Clyde. That's what it will be, a modern Bonnie and Clyde plus Florida Man
I hope she's able to go barefoot amd you can see the wrinkles on her soles.
Astral chain stole a lot from evangelion
Goldeneye N64 was based on that one movie. Braveheart
Silent Hill is copied off Jacob's Ladder
The part where Michael pulls down that stilt house on the hill with his truck is a shot-for-shot recreation of the same scene in Lethal Weapon 2
all the housers did was rip off films. in gta 5 they even ripped off the beginning heat scene where they use a semi to topple over an armored truck. then because gta is a shit series you had to kill literally 100 cops. gta 5 was one of the dumbest games i've ever played. the story says you're supposed to be professional thieves but every heist has you mowing down hundreds of people. trash
Theyre are obviously parodies. Like listen to fricking radio comercials dude. The problem is that sometimes the story gets serious them it just comes off as plagiarism
yeah, i don't buy it because it was the same thing in every other game. in their serious story of rdr2 and la noire you're cutting down people by the hundreds
Because that's fun. You must be some solo-stealth, payday2 sperg.
why isn't there real options for approaching heists that affect the outcome? the only thing that has improved in the houser's games is the technology which btw is created entirely by americans in case some people aren't aware.
I haven't played 5 but I know 4 sucks so maybe. Sopranos is shit, how could you stand watching enough of that garbage to know if something is like it?
The opening of No More Heroes is basically the big action scene confrontation from Kill Bill vol1 where Beatrix fights the 99.
Watchdogs 1 was basically a game of The Dark Knight but as not-Batman (though I accept that this could be coincidental since it's a modern day version of Assassin's Creed which is literally just historical Batman, and it's set in Chicago where TDK was filmed)
Sonic obviously stole (parodied) a lot from DBZ
Dead Space is literally just a videogame of Alien/s with Resident Evil 4 combat
Halo was the videogame of Aliens before that
Metroid was also a videogame of Aliens (Aliens inspired a lot of videogames)
>Halo was the videogame of Aliens
lol what. Just because its in space and the bad guys are aliens.
https://halo.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_references_to_Aliens_in_Halo
Literally 5 seconds of google. Bungie themselves even admitted it.
covenant kinda look like xenomorphs
difference is Halo is literally just the iraq war in space and the aliens are space muslims
Dead space is literally event horizon, even down to the repair equipment used as weaponry
Assassin's Creed - Kingdom of Heaven
AC2 - ?
AC3 - Gangs of New York, The Last of the Mohicans, The Patriot
AC4 - the unmade pirate epic that hollywood hasn't tackled since the 60s (Black Sails happened to release at basically the same time and they obviously share a lot of obvious overlap)
AC Unity - Les Miserables
AC Syndicate - Gangs of New York (again), Peaky Blinders
AC Origins - ?
AC Odyssey - (Alexander and other ancient Greek epics)
AC Valhalla - Vikings
Read a hystory book homie lmao. If anything AC is ripping of the Matrix.
>AC Unity - Les Miserables
Another victim of the "thought Les Miserables was about the 1789 revolution" misunderstanding
I'm 22 and have tony's hairline
Having rewatched Blackhawk Down recently, I realized that the look, feel, set pieces, and action of COD4; especially the American missions, are taken directly from the movie.
The son of Imran Zakhaev that you kill in one of the later missions is wearing the same tracksuit as the villain in the movie Behind Enemy Lines
MW2 is just nonstop references to The Rock and Red Dawn
Modern Warfare 3 does even more Behind Enemy Lines references with a few levels in Mogadishu
Tony Scott and Brian Helgeland should sue Rockstar. Max Payne 3 is pretty much just this movie, but without the kid.
You do understand that Man of Fire is not an original movie?
>examples of games do you know whose plot was inspired by television
literally every game is like 90% direct rip offs or "homage" to shows and movies
Kojimbo when he ripped off Blade Runner, Kojimbo when he ripped off Lethal Weapon, etc
Resident Evil is basically “Let’s take Night of the Living Dead, The Fly, Aliens, Terminator, The Thing, The Birds, Jurassic Park, Tremors, Dagon, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Evil Dead, and throw them into a blender.”
Uncharted/Tomb Raider from Indiana Jones
deadly premonition 1 is basically twin peaks seasons 1 and 2
deadly premonition 2 is basically true detective season 1
i want to like the director for being so wacky but man, how much he lifted from both really makes him feel like a turbo hack
Only Michael is based on Tony Soprano. They had a great original story with Trevor, the whole game should have been about him building his meth empire with Michael and Franklin cut out. And since he's a psycho who doesn't care about subtlety or family it wouldn't have been accused of ripping off Breaking Bad.
Trevor was created to appease all the people that were complaining about IV being too serious and who missed rampages and main characters being sociopaths, there isn't much more to him.
It's the action during his introductory missions that interests me, fighting biker gangs and assassinating drug suppliers. Then you can buy your own air strip to conduct drug deliveries by sea plane. And the countryside environment would have been a refreshing change from past GTAs.
