Three was a continuation of 2. Dead Man's chest and World's End are one single story. Stranger Tides was just painfully mediocre and tried to recreate the first film and it did terribly

Dead Men tell no Tales pisses me off as it brings back the Revenge now captained by Barbosa, shows it once then never mentions it again.
The highlight of 4 is probably the mermaid hunt at whitecap bay followed by Barbosa giving no fricks at losing most of his crew 100% loyal to the crown to thristy rape mermaid action
Because Jack was not the main character. He was the supporting character to Will Turner. Yes, of course Depp had the stronger character, role, writing, etc, and the success of the first movie can be attributed in great part to Depp's performance, but 4 movies in, it's not new or novel concept anymore, and you need a "main character" to balance Jack.
But they gave Will's character a resolution and role in universe that prevented anything more than a cameo appearance of the script with by the time the 4th and 5th movies rolled around, Sam Claflin was a fresh actor with no star power or draw, although his character was the "will turner" of that movie, and in the 5th movie, the will turner (son) was showed up by a woman.
It's a dead franchise because it was built as a trilogy, most of the characters we cared about were written to have had a resolution, and the "draw" of the movie - Depp as Jack - is basically a clown that NEEDS to be balanced.
They should have made a new trilogy and introduced a new MC in 4, instead of thinking Depp could carry the film. I loved the first three movies and saw all 3 opening day in theaters, but Pirates 4 is one of the few movies I ever almost fell asleep while at the theater watching
3 was the best in the franchise. Strongest opening sequence, phenomenal ending they ties up the many threads of the story, incredible writing for all of the characters. Quinoa at its finest tbh.
