I think making solo movies for everyone before JL wouldn't have made anything better. They just can't handle writing anything that isn't Batman's story.
They announced it a year before IM was even released. Point is, Iron Man was a good, succesful film and because of that they used the sequel to set up the rest of their universe. Imagine if The Incredible Hulk, which opened to middling reviews a rather low box office, was used as the lynchpin instead? I doubt the MCU would have lasted that much.
DC didn't focus on making a single great fricking movie to center their universe around, they released a controversial Superman then waited three years to release a crossover film instead of an actual sequel.
I still don't know why the frick they didn't do a solo Batfleck movie first. I get that they were in a big damn hurry to fast-forward to the crossover for the big payday but it's a Batman movie. It would have made plenty of money. And they could have released WW before the crossover, too since it's a standalone period piece that's not dependent on BVS to set it up. Then you wouldn't have to spend so much time establishing either of those characters in BVS and you could have had Luthor appear in a brief scene just to get him out there. You could have given Cavill a scene with Batfleck so their entire interaction prior to the big fight isn't the one twenty-second exchange in BVS
So much of what gives the first Avengers movie time to do what it does is the fact that the previous films did some of the heavy lifting. Tony's character and his relationships with Pepper and SHIELD are already established so you can play off of them instead of having to waste time setting them up. Whereas BVS has to introduce Batfleck, Luthor AND Wonder Woman, set up the conflict between characters who shared no screentime up until now, lead into the death of this version of Superman even though this is only his second film and tease every the member of the JL, which they awkwardly chose to do in the middle of the film. This is like three movies' worth of plot plus a trailer all crammed into 2 1/2 hours. It's a miracle Snyder made a decent film at all given how much they dumped on him
BvS feels like a solo batman flick. Superman is just his villain. I think he only has a handful of lines anyway and just autistically stares into the distance and cries.

So they hired Matt Reeves because he was the only competent director who agreed to the project. He demanded complete creative control, Hamda granted it. Then Reeves refused to work with Geoff Johns. He also said Affleck's script was great but that he didn't think he could do it justice.
So he went with a younger Batman. It was supposed to be a prequel and still the same Batman though. Seeing what an absolute state the DCEU was at this point though, Reeves said frick that and made it independent.

the postcredits scene of the flash showed they are keeping the awful comedy so it should still be a disaster no matter what
so the same as any capeshit then? I dont see this hurting its chances to make money really.
