It is 100% intentional that the flashbacks are contradictory. The only mistake the film makes is in assuming the viewer is not an idiot and doesn't need the reasoning behind this explained to them directly.

It's a story a guy is telling in the film, that leaves the truth of it ambiguous. It's not like they cut to a scene with no set up.
