Halfway through season 2. How long will it be until I get to the equivalent of Adventure Time Season 5 where everyone on Cinemaphile starts b***hing about the show's direction?
I'm kinda sick of all the hate Mordecai gets when Rigby also has done stupid stuff, I have to respect what the writers did for his character though going from the worst slacker in the duo to one upping Mordecai on relationships and maturity.
Rigby didn't know how to talk to Eileen either, but her VA self inserted into the character and she liked being talked down to. Like Rebecca Sugar drawing herself in chains held by Dib from zim.

Have you ever seen the final episode of The Wonder Years? The entire series is Winnie Cooper, Winnie Cooper, Winnie Cooper, and in the last episode they frick, life forces them to go their separate ways, but eventually they become friends and introduce their spouses to each other. The point is that ultimately, most people don't end up with their childhood crush, and that's fine. It's still magical, but there's also love later on.

Because for every selfish thing we saw Rigby do we also saw him mature over the last quarter of the series. While Mordecai just became more whiny and pathetic as the series went on until the final season where he was basically a nothing character.
Honestly I remember Mordecai being pretty alright outside of romance focused episodes. Him and Rigby together were still a fantastic duo and at least he moved on with his life and got a family in the end.
Mordecai is definitely fine outside of romance. People like to give him shit for being a jerk to Rigby but they do it to each other all the time. That's how most of the main characters in the show function, it's a very specific style of bro writing you don't see hardly anywhere else. Giving each other crap but still having a heart. Obviously the quality of that varies between episodes and writers but I feel like it's pretty obvious Mordecai (and the rest) are not awful people, despite how they behave.
