This took place before the general public realized Disney is a raging cesspool of wokery and no talent. All of their big brands have been run into the ground. Even Star Wars. Nobody watches Star Wars anymore except us Cinemaphile die hards.

The brand is so tarnished even if they put out something good (Andor) nobody will believe it and will refuse to see it. That is how badly their brand has been run into the ground. Even the average joe normie isn't on board anymore. Same with Marvel.

I stopped buying a long time ago. "They" can keep it. If Star Wars is a moldering corpse on the side of the road with naught but shills furiously jerking off to their own headcanons of how a disjointed, lazy, corporate piece of shit is a masterpiece, c'est la vie.

            >It's like the entire thing was made as a sick joke.
It was. The Lucasfilm Story Group exists only to push their own stupid shit, not anything actually Star Wars unless they can repurpose it for their rejected scripts.

I did some thinking, and I feel like I "get" it. It's assumed people will buy Star Wars because it says Star Wars, same with Marvel. So thus they take some nobodies they can hire for cheap and say "we already have the men secured. Go expand the market towards women and minorities" and so it implodes.

Yeah it felt insulting. Like they just wanted to hurt fans.

And then, TLJ, when Jonson was so high on his own farts he decided he was too "smart" for Star Wars. How someone is so dumb he can't understand the monomyth gets a billion dollars is something only Hollywood can explain.

Frick it, I'mma marathon everything Godzilla, read Campbell and Lashomb, and maybe whack off instead of watch Star Wars ever again.

I just dunno if you can really do nostalgia for something that's 10 years old well. Did The Amazing Spider-Man movies get some major nostalgia boost from No Where Home? The most I saw were people saying they were bad movies with a good Spidey.

I would watch a Poe Dameron film. I might even watch a Finn film, there’s potential he could still be made interesting. Rey though? The character is irredeemable, you can’t salvage it, and the “actor” they have to play the character still does not possess the ability to fricking act.

      >This is a trilogy, right?
I'm not sure, so far I don't think I've seen any official source mention anything more than one movie.
They probably would have immediately announced a trilogy if they were confident in their slop. It just feels like they're making this one just to antagonize the old fans. They have to know nobody wants to see more of those characters. They're just taunting their former fanbase at this point.

      It's one film.
They announced three at the same time and those moronic esl fansites called it a trilogy.
There is a Filoni film that is meant to close the TV crap out, a origin of the jedi order film that won't happen and thus Rey film

They have an agenda, and will push it until it either succeeds, or the brand collapses. It's that simple. They want Star Wars to be a feminist franchise, and that's that. The future is either female, or buried.

I think this one will. They've made a big enough deal about it and it can be justified as an out for Kennedy while blaming men

They'll do the same thing they did with all the other planned movie projects

      >announce projects based on what the marketing team told him the audience wants (they're delusional)
      >gauge audience reaction
      >audience reaction is total demoralized indifference
      >wait a while
      >silently pull movie off schedule

I think the main issue here is that there's some woke marketing team they hired that keeps feeding them bullshit. Essentially they have a meeting and the marketing team tells them "THIS is trending on twitter, you have to include THIS in your next movie for it to be a success". The flaw in this logic is that twitter trends change daily and also twitter trends is not what translates into elements of a good movie.
So they're in this downward spiral of chasing trends and trying to react to a fickle demographic on twitter.
Someone auto-liking a "woke" post on twitter does not mean they're going to buy your soulless product and it certainly does not mean they have the money to keep throwing your way.

THIS right here. Rian made exactly the movie he wanted to make. There was no lack of artistic integrity from Rian. He was simply 1000% the wrong person for the job from the get go. Every negative criticism about TLJ is true. The movie may have been full of SEETHING hate and jealousy for G.L. and all things Star Wars. But it was from the heart.

Wrong. It was over the second this israelite decided he thought he knew Star Wars better than the man who created it, proceeded to toss out his story outlines, and undo the ending of RotJ so he could make his soulless creatively bankrupt soft reboot. TLJ sucks major donkey dick but make no mistake, JJ Abrams killed Star Wars.

        Anonymous

Is it just me or did TFA & TROS pretty much kill JJ popularity as a director? He was basically a juggernaut pop culture wise before star wars and he’s dropped off the radar ever since. He got paid hundreds of millions by WB and produced absolutely nothing sure he’s stil a producer with bad robot but he isn’t exactly making headlines like he used to

          Anonymous

It was probably one of the reasons, but he signed the deal with WB before TROS got released
Forbes found out last year that the budget for TROS wasn't $275 million as it was originally reported, but $416-503 million meaning at best the movie did only a little better than break even
Then COVID happened which curbed a lot of projects and reduced the amount of money Hollywood could throw around
Then it turned out with Rings of Power the showrunners were recommended by JJ
Then Zaslav took over WB and started slashing expensive projects and cut most of JJ's projects (there's still a few he has at WB, though)

          Anonymous

          It was TROS.
That was what finally woke normies up to realizing how much of a conman israeliteisraelite always was. Since then, his producer contracts have been slowly fading + he got fired by Warner Bros around 2022 for withholding money under Bad Robot for too long.

          Anonymous

TROS being awful is probably what did it. People didn't really have much criticism for TFA at first, beyond the fact that it felt like a retread of A New Hope. The film was perhaps underwhelming or disappointing for people who expected big things, but most people didn't expect much. The prequels had lowered a lot of people's expectations of Star Wars movies, so getting something formulaic and familiar was almost a relief, and if it was unambitious then maybe it could at least serve as a base for better movies afterward.

And then TLJ came out, and it was sheer shit. This actually made people cling to TFA more, and blame Rian Johnson for ruining its potential. But then JJ released the final turd of the sequel trilogy, TROS, and it became apparent he had no plan at all, it had all been smoke and mirrors, and Rian pulling the rug out from under him just exposed him for the utter fraud he'd always been.

The franchise has so many primary, secondary and tertiary characters that they can keep doing this forever.

They literally ruined Mando by overloading it with cameos.

I'm sure they'll eventually bring Mace back too and pretty much all of those "dead" jedi from the prequels and handwave it away as them being half cybernetic or some shit.
And they can have Chewie, C3PO and R2D2 show up forever.

Now more than ever you could salvage Rey as a character. Framing a new movie about her post Rise, with Sheev dead, have some plot point about her force powers being largely the result of being groomed as a vessel for Palp. With him dead, the bulk of her powers are gone. Set a movie about Rey having to pick up the pieces and build a new jedi group from scratch with her having to be both student and mentor to a couple new younger characters, make each one naturally gifted with the force of a specific alignment. One light, one Dark, Rey sits somewhere in the middle. Make good on this idea that Rey's whole life long goal is to actually end the eternal conflict between light and dark. Introduce a new threat in the form of a reactionary new republic military that wants to quash out the new jedi order. Rey's faction winds up full of reformed imperials and rebels who chafed under the new more martial Republic.

The problem with any further sequel is that they keep having to bring "imperials" back in some fort or another. Every other villain seems trite and not interesting or easily coded as evil as the imperials are.
Every single movie, spinoff and so on has defaulted back to the imperials being the villains.

So that means they'll bring the imperials back, then turns out Rey is having visions of Palpatine, because why not, then turns out she really COULD be a vessel for Palpatine then she needs to fight him off (rape parallels) etc..

This is why it should've ended with ROTJ and they should've simply created a new IP.

I think i mostly agree, I hate bringing imperials back with another helmet. I was thinking it would be bit of a twist, where the "heroic faction" of the previous stories has finally won, and is so fricking scared of the jedi and the imperials with the damage they've wrought in the last half century that they're jumping at shadows and committing atrocities in the name of never letting force users and the imperials gain power ever again. Naturally this clashes with the attempt at making a new neutral jedi order. Star Wars is so fricking locked into this generic iconography of "bad guy helmet vs normal guys"

The issue is that Star Wars at its core is a simple morality tale and the moral of it concluded in ROTJ. Having it continuously be extended not only cheapens the impact of the original tale, but automatically misses the point that it WAS a morality tale. Having everyone be some grey morality faction goes against the grain of the strengths of the franchise.
The story was GOOD vs EVIL and GOOD won. There's no room for grey or neutral or compromises or whatever... that's a DIFFERENT setting with a different ruleset.

Grey jedi have been a thing in the setting for a long ass time now. So it's not beyond the pale in terms of shit that's already established by any means. I think there would just be great drama potential with Rey, someone who didn't really have to work all that hard for her power, being shoved back down into the mud, and on top of that, she has to guide two people who've shown propensity to either side of the light/dark dichotomy. Rey having to recover her own power, while trying to basically stop the light vs dark cycle from starting again and actually maintain the balance in the force would be a damn sight more interesting than anything else Disney's going to eventually do with it. I'd also argue that she shouldn't survive more than a movie or two worth of plot. If they want that character to matter she should stay under powered, and die heroically after having put her faith in the other two characters sticking together as a pair and not succumbing to the eternal rivalry.

I aint saying it would be great. But It would salvage that fricking character a bit. Lord knows what they'll actually do with her will be way worse.

Your pitch sucks for the same reason a lot of modern Star Wars sucks: a complete lack of understanding of the cultural influences that went into the original trilogy. There is no "middle" when it comes to the dark vs light side of the force, and deliberately training a jedi to be strong with the dark side of the force is like raising your own child to be a sociopath. Then again if its framed as Rey doing this because she's a big moron who was never properly trained then it could be somewhat compelling, the only obstacle there is the writers will never allow her to be wrong.

Grey Jedi are just jedi outside of the standard alignment. Someone who can accept both the good and bad parts of themselves without fully succumbing to either one. The Jedi Orders weird emotional sterility lead to stagnation and eventual extinction and the Sith were perpetually destroying themselves out of lust for power and paranoia. Luke more or less embodies this, he's a naturally altruistic person at heart, but he succumbs a bunch to his more base desires, namely in Empire he cuts his training short to rush back to his friends and almost dies for it, in Return he lets his rage take over and fricks Vader up before pulling himself back. The entire concept of "balance to the force" implies that it's the desired eventual state of the galaxy.

"Bringing balance to the Force" means the complete eradication of the Sith and and their tainting of the Force, which was accomplished when Vader killed Palpatine and was redeemed. Also our examples are not Luke being a "Gray Jedi", its just him failing at being a Jedi. And when you wield a power that makes the Death Star look insignificant (according to Vader), having some self discipline is pretty damn important. I shudder to think of the chaos that would ensue if most of the people who post here ever attained that kind of power.

              Anonymous

How are they outside of the standard alignment? What distinguishes them? Acceptance? Luke accepts his rage will destroy him in ROTJ. Does that make him a Grey Jedi?

This is an ill defined concept. It can apply to almost any character in any canon. Vader technically accepted how full of hate and malice he was. Does that qualify him for the status of Grey Jedi? Definitely didn't listen to the Order or the Council either.

And the only place they can take Rey is forcing her to accept she isn't special. Like if she were chosen to represent the Force against the unnatural lifespan of Palpatine and now that he is gone permanently only she is left. So she must either acquiesce her power or succumb to the dark side.

Yeah that's the only thing I can see. It'd let them retcon at least part of TROS as well. You can have Ghost Kylo say Palpatine fricks with your head and all that shit about being his weird clone spawn, do you really believe that bullshit, Rey? You didn't believe me? You just HAD to be special? Well it turns out the Force just picked you really at total random. You're a Force Scion, or something. It's will made physically manifest, but now Palpy's gone, and you're shooting lightning out of your fricking hands like a Sith and doing weird shit like bringing me back to life but then I die anyway? Oh and you totally defeated Palpy by just whipping out another lightsaber? Nah you didn't lol, you don't until you just surrender the Force.
And so she finally either confronts she's just a normie that got picked at random and becomes a normie again or she let's Ghost Palpatine possess her for real.

Since you won't get a straight answer from the anon you're asking I'll try: they think a gray jedi have aspects of both the light and dark in them, as if they are some equal but opposite forces to be held in balance. But this is moronic because balance in Star Wars is like the Buddhist pursuit of enlightenment, which is to live in tune with the light side of the force. The dark side upsets this balance as it is purely a corrupting influence. Gray Jedi are pure nonsense invented by people who don't understand Star Wars, which always confuses me as to why they always get so defensive about their fanfiction when called out. They cling to the false interpretation of Star Wars so desperately they completely miss what George was trying to share with us in the first place.

Disney stock is down considerably from 2 years ago and Bob Iger acknowledged that the MCU is fricked and delayed everything to rework it. I don't understand how Lucasfilm/Kathleen Kennedy are still allowed to live in an alternate universe where woke media is still thriving and where the Star Wars brand isn't in the gutter. Either Kathleen Kennedy has an unreasonable amount of power/leverage within the company or they're just being extremely slow to adjust to the times.

Because the fact is the sequel movies made billions of dollars collectively. They can simply point to their box office as proof the films are popular. The evidence for the sequel's failure lies in its lack of ensuing success in merchandising and branding, which is where Lucas made his real fortune on Star Wars. If your Star Wars movies can't move toys and themed merchandise to the extent that the OT and even the prequels did, then they're failures.

For Disney in particular the brand is the real money maker, not the film itself. The movie being able to pay for itself is nice, but what they really need is something to draw people to parks and other themed attractions based on the film. Disney would probably trade half the total box office gross for these films in exchange for better toy sales. At least half. Toy sales are huge for a brand like this, because it's indicative of long-term success. Toy sales mean kids who grow up into life long fans of the sort Star Wars has profited off of for decades. Lifelong Star Wars fans are what turned it into a juggernaut in the first place, and in a way that is the entire reason Disney made more Star Wars films: they wanted to grow their own crop of fans loyal to their Star Wars brand, rather than Lucas's, for the next several decades.

And they totally failed in that respect. Kathleen probably hides behind the box office totals for the movies but everybody else knows the brand is in a bad situation right now with extremely low engagement from kids and total abandonment by the hardcore fans who had supported Star Wars in the past.

    Listen:

    I don't have a problem with women in sci-fi.
There have been several GREAT science fiction writers who were women.
These women both created their own original works, and they made contributions to existing sci-fi franchises. Including Star Wars. They wrote many good and great episodes of popular science fiction television shows, including Star Trek.

Get THEM to work on the new Star Wars. Yes, some of them are old. Who cares?
They can still write. They have decades and decades of experience with the subject and know how to write a good story that anyone can enjoy.

These women they have working on sci-fi now are jenny-come-latelys who have never even proven themselves capable of creating good sci-fi in the mediums traditionally used as testing grounds before a person gets into movie making: novels and comic books.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is a journalist. Perhaps even a very good one. She has written numerous non-fiction works. She is a skilled political activist, not a creative genius. She has written so far three generic children's movies that made zero impact in the world.
She has no qualifications at all for making a good Star Wars film. She has done NO WORK AT ALL with anything regarding practical special effects, nor does her biography suggest any interest all in the subject. There is NOTHING from her to suggest any Star Wars film she makes will be good. NOTHING to suggest she has any connection to this kind of movie making at all.

Most current MCU movies and shows don't even have finished scripts before they begin shooting. They are very up front about it. They just start shooting whatever they have on hand at the time. Then get enough shot to make a complete movie or show. Then test it in front of friends and family. It always test horribly because it was made in a moronic way in the first place. So they reshoot the whole thing. This is how you get shittly shows like She-Hulk and Secret Invasion movies like the Marvels costing more than Rebel Moon.
