I agree with the almost kino rating but for different reasons. The shaggy dog story nature of the plot is fine. Great even. The scene with the music man was turbo cringe.

Because it was happening in his head and he's a moron manchild. Most of the movie is like this (specially everything related to cooming). He's an unreliable narrator.

It's happening in his head (his POV, what you usually see), but also in real life more or less. As I said, unreliable narrator.

Yeah but this one goes absolutely nowhere. He learns that a chick he liked is a prostitute, he bangs his MILF neighbor and gets evicted. That's the story.

if you only look at it through the plot, yes. But think of the film thematically. It's a film about the entertainment industry in California, and it paints a very unflattering picture. It's full of prostitutes and homeless and drugs and clout chasers and weirdos. People are impoverished, abandoning their hometowns, taking demeaning jobs, all in the hopes of making it big. The main character thinks there's more to Hollywood than meets the eye. He thinks there's something secret and hidden. Throughout the film things get progressively more and more fricked up. And when he finds out what it is, the girl he's trying to save is like "yeah, whatever. I'm fine with it." The film is a very bold message about NPCs turning a blind eye to all the fricked up shit in Hollywood, not because they're unaware of it, they are aware, they just don't fricking care. That's a pretty based and redpilled message for a film to have.

And I also liked how it was sort of like a modern Hitchwiener thriller.

The hollywood thing is just a backdrop. Its about you the viewer and your need to project meaning into everything. We've become more interested in what the hitchwiener dolly zoom meant in that scene more than what it made us feel and it's disgusting. The director made the bird spew absolute gibberish in the end knowing that some r/movies user will twist himself into knots trying to decipher its meaning in a vain attempt to gleam some message that he can post about it later

The film is actually saying to find your own meaning and don’t sweat the rest of it whether it has meaning or not. You don’t have to unravel every code and Google every thought that comes into your brain. That’s what unhappy and distracted people do. You should just live
