Investors would get tax breaks and credits to offset income/profit, etc … if it made money great, if it didn’t win$win … but the production money had to be spent in the fiscal year, which is why all of Boll’s films were rushed and janky. Basically he had to get a from zero to deliver in 12 months. Box office was never an issue, it was basically PR pushes for ongoing DVD sales which brought in residuals (and also then staggered lower tax income for investors).
It’s all Hollywood accounting. People say his films were bombs but I seriously doubt Boll or any investors lost money with what they were doing. He always managed to largely self finance his next multi million dollar flick and open a successful million dollar restaurant in vancouver.

Because of the financing he only has a year to make them. So he just crashed from one to other to make money and not give a frick and film what he wanted. Filmmaker need time and money, he only had one so he did what he needed to make film: exploitative trash, often filming multiple movies at the same time and set. (He literally filmed a drama titled “Auschwitz” and video ripoff “Bloodrayne: The Third Reich” at the same time so he could reuse the Nazi stuff). His early movie got some genuine good reviews. He “retired” because the financing loopholes were closed. Word is he’s coming back, and working on some legit films (now that the cost of filming, via digital cams etc has lowered the barriers and increased quality and distribution opportunities hugely over the decade)
