Poisoning food is one of the worst things you can try to do. Too little poison and they survive, which is the absolute worst case scenario (and the most likely scenario, since the required dosage is going to change depending on exactly how much of the poisoned food they eat vs the unpoisoned food). Every time you undershoot, they build up immunity (meaning you'll probably frick up the next dosage, too) AND they probably go to the hospital, and the first thing the cops do once a poisoning is suspected is go through every ounce of food and trash that's been through your house in the past several weeks. Undershooting once means you're almost certainly fricked. Overshoot and it's even worse, because that's the sort of thing that leads to suspicious results in the course of a standard death certification process.
Strange poisons delivered by stranger delivery methods are always the safer way to go.
