ITT: cartoons ruined by executive meddling

The reason why Freakazoid abandoned most of their characters and focused on half hour stories, as opposed to the sketch format, was because WB wanted to focus on more stories that made sense.

Focusing on Freakazoid was a good move though. Season 2 was better than season 1.

"Hello Lobey" alone was worth it. David Warner was a man of true love for acting no matter the context.

This. As much as I liked the random skit sequences, Season 2 was better overall.

To sell merchandise, kids doesn't like wacky for the sake of being wacky and needs a nice middle ground between telling a plot and zaniness.

      >To sell merchandise
I don't remember ANY Freakazoid merchandise. Consumerism may have been on the rise in the 90s, but I feel like people really don't remember how tame it was compared to today.

How is it i've forgotten so much of freakazoid but it's still instantly memorable when reminded of it and still so goddamn funny.

      how?

long story short a new director/executive hated the show because it was edgy and supposedly "harmed the image of the channel", and 'hateful fart cartoon' was what he called it when he was turning his shitfit into a public occurrence inside the studio.

What's interesting is that that executive was a former artist, so it's not like this was a vendetta by somebody who didn't get it.

he still made his dumbass rant into a scene inside the show so he's still a ginormous gay

"Hateful fart" is just such an odd descriptor for something

i'd imagine that probably came from the whole grossout bit CN was doing with characters like cheese or fred at the time combined with it being the edgiest show in the lineup i guess.

The problem with Steven Spielberg produced shows is the sheer amount of empty suits who look to make a mark. Like Pinky and the Brain being ruined because not only did some executive not get comedy duos but felt this award winning critical darling of a show needed a child in it.

between the show literally having an episode mocking the whole 'executive decision to force in a character badly made to be marketable' and the intro of that one openly mocking the executives it was clear that no one that actually produced the show was happy with that

The pacing of season 1 was pretty poor, and that was purportedly due to a last minute edict to trim half-hour episodes to the 11-minute format.

We know that happened, we just can't say with absolute certainty that was the source of all problems. For example, no matter how much time they are allotted, Randy remains a shit character.

    Voltron.

Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of issues that plagued that show, but everything went off the rails once the executives insisted that Shiro wasn't allowed to die and had to remain a part of the main cast.

The writers weren't skilled enough to handle that shift and they completely blanked on what to do next.
