Lucas was fine in s4 speifically cause so much of the fat in Hawkins was trimmed so he can function as the normal straight man around more eccentric characters without Will/Mike there to make this redundant

I don't think this is really based on how much people like their characters, since Will's character is the most useless and forgettable in the entire show followed only by his brother.
You can do that for about 80% of the cast at this point though. Will at least has gay suffering, some weird as yet unexplained connection to the Upside Down, Joyce as a mother and Eleven as a sister. That combines to make him a slightly more integral to the plot and interesting character to tweet about than say Lucas who has an ex and basketball.
