My only real gripe with the Kampfer is that it stands out too much structurally compared to it's contemporaries. It almost looks like an F91 suit or something.
That is kind of because War in the Pocket ('89) was produced closer to F91 ('91) than it was to the original Gundam ('79).

What seems to really elude people on here, are OVAs that are only a few episodes long, between 30 to 40 minutes in length, in which so much time is really dedicated to story and then on action or visual set pieces. People are obsessed with the Kampfer "jobbing" because they're looking at it as if it occupies the same role as something in a longer-running TV show. They forget with something like War in the Pocket, everything is specifically-directed to be within a 30-minute window by the time the video wraps up, with the next video being focused around a totally different visual set piece.

even if that was true (it isnt, this doesnt really look all that much like a zaku), zakus are great, it wears blue really well, the added spikes and details are tasteful, whats not to like?

Everybody likes kampfer because it's an excellent design, it's just deep enough under the surface so absolute tourists don't see it and can get hung up on the muh grunt zaku love instead, and it gets its ass kicked in an instant so there's a degree of humility and lack of biggest and strongest appeal.
Kampfer is just pure piloting talent since it has no armor or any gimmick powers like psycommu or psychoframe. It's not quite as impressive as piloting a Leo or Zanny well but it's up there.

Sorry to break it to you but vibration is the enemy of all engineering. What is a flame-front from a high explosive like you'd find in those gigantic anti-MS mines that hit the gay? Getter Robo has the highest ratio of shit designs to series popularity out of any robot anime.
Dunno which I find more bad, Arc or Shin Getter. Yes, Shin Getter's design is just a big buff Getter Robo. The Arc Anime made Shin Getter better by coloring it Black. But overall, Shin Geter is just too much, it's just big.
