Amuro basically got gang pressed into Federation service so while he may have some greater than his own needs moral obligation to the rest of the white base crew for piloting the Gundam because he's the best one to do it and the rest of them are mostly there by circumstance like he is (which is an understanding he eventually comes around to) you can understand why a teenager would feel resentful of such responsibility being thrust upon them and want to abandon it.
