Eddie Murphy was just as bad in Mulan imo but he gets a pass for some reason
I hate Mushu, I don't know why he's loved so much
Clearly Mulan was too dark for kids so they had to add a shitty out-of-place mascot
He was better as Donkey though.
Good lines, good delivery, and good energy. He's just below William's Genie to be honest.
He probably doesn't clash as much with the film's tone as the gargoyles did.
Mushu is shit and the reason he's shit is because he's supposed to be a guardian yet his actions intentionally could lead to the death of someone he's supposed to keep safe and it was shown Mushu has gotten others killed. So he's a selfish grossly incompetent pile of shit.
Wasn't he picked by the ancestors as a joke anyways? The cricket is the real guardian
He wasn't picked at all. He was supposed to awaken another dragon to act as guardian.
He was outright villainous in the direct to tv sequel even if that wasn't the intention.
Eddie doesn’t sing a song, and there was plenty of humor in Mulan even without Mushu. The gargoyles stick out more. I once watched a fan-edit with them taken out and it didn’t even feel like the movie needed them, it was easier to focus on the dark narrative.
Nah, he was dreadful, wish he wasn't in it.
Not Cinemaphile, but still fits the bill.
It's the voice. If he had a different voice he would have been far more tolerable. He just really brings down the movie whenever he shows up.
In Phantom Menace, sure. In later stuff they reign Jar Jar in a back and he's mostly fine. His arc with Mace Windu in the Clone Wars is actually pretty good. Especially since Mace Windu treats Binks better than he treats Anakin in Revenge of the Sith.
keep seething, Jar was based and much better than C3PO. Phantom Menace just fricking sucks overall.
Phantom Menace was fantastic
>C3PO
He was so good in A New Hope because he was useful and actually snarky. Everything after fricks up his character as "unlucky robot who complains a lot".
What did he actually do there. it was all R2-D2 doing shit in new hope while threepio followed him.
At least in return of the jedi his translation software was instrumental with the Ewoks.
he just doesn't work without R2, they balance each other. By their own R2 is just a key for Luke to open doors, and C3PO an annoyance for Han and the audience.
>Phantom Menace just fricking sucks overall.
I feel like after the sequels it's so fricking hard to hate the prequels, yes they were messes but they at least had soul
i don't have to hate them to realise they are a mess. I find it to be the most enjoyable of the 3, at least.
Phantom Menace is probably the worst of the prequels (and the george films in general) because it's a cluttered mess that tries to introduce too many concepts at once. If it was just about Anakin's origin it might have worked better but it juggles that with the trade federation invasion of naboo, the politics of the republic as well as set up a bunch of characters for later films.
That was something Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith fixed. They were more focused, in the stories they were telling. Both still had moments of lackluster scenes but compared to Phantom Menace, I can actually sit through both films without feeling the need to skip scenes.
AOTC is still worse as it has zero redeeming qualities.
PM at least has the Maul fight at the end. AOTC doesn't even have a good original score in it like the other 2 prequel films do.
Phantom Menace is the best of the prequels, off yourself.
People in 1999 wouldn't shut up about him for his ugly design, weird voice, and how much of a forced comic-relief he was.
Like, I fricking get it man.
I never minded him as a kid, but i haven't seen the film in forever.
Only later seasons, dude.
Underrated
>talks about X random celebrity from pedowood that I don't give a frick every fricking episode he appears.
I don’t think they’re any worse than the average Disney comic relief, they just come off worse because Hunchback is a darker and more serious film
You posted it. I've fricking hated this trip sense I was a kid. Hell I hated Hunchback and refused to watch it as a kid simply because of these 3.
The rest of the movie is legit great. Frollo carried it.
The gargoyles were very unlikable though, all three of them. And this is the same Disney era that brought us Genie, Timon and Pumbaa, and Hades.
Given how the hunchback was openly consorting with Demonically possessed statues (because fricking hell, that's pretty much the only explanation for them), he ironically was 100% correct in his inquisitorial nature.
But they weren't exactly malicious in nature either. If anything it only strengthens the theme of the corrupt elite being the real monster.
Any comedic relief that gets a girl
I think OP wins because they nearly ruined the movie, but I hate Pony head so much
I tried watching the first episode of Star Vs. and Ponyhead's stupid sassy black voice made me drop the show on the spot. Judging from lurking in later /svg/ threads I'm glad I missed out.
It's less that they were bad comic relief and more that the Gargoyles were legitimately out of place. They're only in the movie so that the darkness of the subject matter doesn't overwhelm the target audience.
You know it's bad enough we already had Hot Rod and Daniel but was Wheelie really required as the kid appeal character? Did he have to use a slingshot? Did he have to fricking rhyme?
Executives were always trying to find ways for kids to self insert themselves into the story or something.
>Lets make characters the kids can relate to and want to be
except kids wanted to be the giant firebreathing dinosaur
Would it have been more tolerable or worse if the trio were actual, totally inanimate gargoyles and Quasimodo used voices for them similar to Kristoff and Sven? No moving around, no songs, just placed in a corner and Quasimodo had a couple "conversations" with them to either cheer himself up or offer himself advice.
Looks like she came from a random cheap movie from Sony/Illumination
this is probably the most egregious example. not only are they out of place in the movie they're in, there's three of them and they get a fricking musical number all to themselves. it's the worst song in the whole movie too
They're the only supernatural thing in the movie, right?
There is the gargoyle head that frollo is hanging onto come to life/turning into a demon and scaring him into letting go so he falls into the fire below.
They always read to me as a figment of Quasi's imagination, either a way to cope with loneliness or a symptom of a deeper psychological issue. Either way, they were awful.
I mean, they kind of were.
>After all, he turned his face towards men only with reluctance; his cathedral was sufficient for him. It was peopled with marble figures,—kings, saints, bishops,—who at least did not burst out laughing in his face, and who gazed upon him only with tranquillity and kindliness. The other statues, those of the monsters and demons, cherished no hatred for him, Quasimodo. He resembled them too much for that. They seemed rather, to be scoffing at other men. The saints were his friends, and blessed him; the monsters were his friends and guarded him. So he held long communion with them. He sometimes passed whole hours crouching before one of these statues, in solitary conversation with it. If any one came, he fled like a lover surprised in his serenade.
If they switch places with the other Gargoyles.
What happens?
You'd have autists years later begging disney to give them their own movie or show
What's Cinemaphile's stance on Gurgi?
That whole movie was a lotr ripoff, Gurgi even sounds like gollum
I've never seen the 70's LotR movie but just from searching up a Gollum clip I pretty much agree. Kinda odd to be your movie mascot on a little gremlin like gollum though.
He lives thank God, if he hadn't I would've killed everyone around me and then myself
I just have a huge soft spot for him since he reminds me of my yorkie dog a lot
he's an abomination and i hate him, but i still felt a little bad when he died. did he stay dead? i haven't watched this start to finish since 99 and i can't remember. tried to watch it earlier this year, but couldn't make it much past the point which gurgi was introduced
Should've stayed dead.
I legit forgot this was actually a Disney film and not something from Don Bluth.
Drags it down, but Eilonwy makes it still decent
Was he a completely different kind of character in the novels?
Gurgi is bad but I think it's more a fault with the entire movie itself.
The entire movie was creepy when I watched it as a kid, but holy frick did his death stung.
What kind a creature is he?
Was I the only one to kept mixing them up with Pain, Panic and Phil?
Not helping since they were released a year after each other.
Mushu works because he has an arc and common ground with Mulan. It adds to the weight of the moment when Mulan is exposed, and he says "we're both frauds" before they resolve to go ahead and fight the Huns anyway
