Like, I think 2001 a Space Odyssey is on the podium of the greatest movies ever made, Arcane is a groundbreaking animated series and so is Love Death and Robots, and it's pretty amazing what Marvel did with its cinematic shared universe, although phase 4 is doing its best to run it through the ground.

Star Wars had one decent scifi flick in the 70s but it shouldn't have become a franchise any more than any of the other decent scifi movies from that decade should have, especially not when it started introducing moronic twists that weren't originally planned and immediately retreaded plot ploints like the death star. The only reason it's such a juggernaut today is because they turned it into a toy franchise in the 80s and so now you've got two or possible three generations of people who were brainwashed into loving the SW universe because of playing with the toys throughout their childhood(and their parents making them play with them and watch the movies) and having the whole "collector" thing giving them the hope that if they bought one of every Phantom Menace toy then they'd become a millionaire.

Star Wars (the six films) is both a juggernaut and one of highest achievements in cinema because George Lucas is a genius.

The Last Jedi is the strongest film of the nuStar Wars trilogy.
    Let me develop a bit:
    >The first episode was a carbon copy of A New Hope, but weaker in every way.
    >I didn't even bother with Rise of Skywalker
    While TLJ:
    >Actually had a theme going (the death of heroism)
    >Made Rey a little bit less of a Mary Sue while keeping her interesting
    >Made Kylo more interesting and nuanced
    >Had Luke still be a badass
    >Had one memorable action scene (you know the one. Yeah sure the choreography is not HEMA-accurate but it looked great)
The deadly sin of the trilogy was not to keep going with this direction.
Although I'll admit that Holdo's plan made absolutely no sense

Reminds of how Ready Player One is clearly a (badly written) story about a world falling to pieces because people's lives are so shitty that they'd rather escape into the virtual world and vote for the meme President of The Internet rather than the real-world President of their country, causing a downward spiral that's just making everything worse and worse, making people flee into their fantasy world more and more. Who cares if you're living in a high-rise made out of trailers if you've got a fancy place that looks like Frasier's apartment in your game world? As the backstory you've got the parallel story of an autistic man who spent his life hanging on to the comfort of old childhood memories and lifeless programs instead of taking the hard road where he had to challenge his autism to talk to people and get the girl he loved, something he regretted at the end of his life.

How did the mainstream react to this story? "OMG DID YOU READ THE BOOK WITH THE HECKIN' CHILDHOOD REFERENCES??? LET'S MAKE A MOVIE THAT'S EVEN MORE ABOUT THE REFERENCES AND THE OASIS IS JUST FINE AS LONG AS THERE'S NOT TOO MANY ADS AND PEOPLE TAKE ONE DAY OFF FROM IT I JUST WANT IT TO BE REAL SOOO BAD BROS!!!"

        That shit was scary.

I gotta stop you there, because I've been down the same rabbit hole.
There is no satire in Ready Player One.
That really obvious, ham-handed satire also isn't satire. It's completely fricking serious. It's like the polar opposite of A Modest Proposal or Poe's Law or whatever.

Ernest Cline operates on zero layers of irony. The man drives around all day in a DeLorean covered in Ghostbusters stickers, wearing an Atari jacket festooned with Star Wars and Rush pins. Look at any picture of him and you can see his sheer, demented gaze. If you want an insight into his social life, consider that at the age of 44, he finally married a longtime "friend" - a fat goth woman who suddenly realized she had been in love with him all along shortly after he became a millionaire author.

Now, in the movie version, there may be some small measure of what you're imagining injected by Spielberg himself; the "get off the Internet for two days a week" afterthought in the ending comes to mind; but I need you to learn, as I once did, that the true mystery of Ernest Cline is that the man is an absolute Chris-Chan tier autist who through some bizarre contrivance of fate became a brief media sensation. It's not performance art. There is no self-reflection, there is no wink and nod, there is only a living Funko Pop.

I hesitate to even describe him as a Redditor. He's more like The Redditor: A Novel By Bret Easton Ellis.

It's the face of a man who knows he's always one second away from getting cancelled for his anti-autism writing, as soon as his fans realise he was telling people to NOT be autistic instead of cheering them on.

I've seen the pictures of him in a delorean and shit but I assumed he just changed his tune when he realised that he was becoming a millionaire thanks to autists who didn't realise he was criticising him, and so he turned himself into one himself. That still sounds more plausible to me than the idea that he managed to write a babby's first cyberpunk story without even meaning to.

I hesitate to actually praise it but it's simply professionally done, which the original obviously was not. I think people might have got mad that it WASN'T more of the "raw viral" shit but as personal preference goes I think I'm not fond of the Found Footage genre. Just in terms of visual feel, it reminds me of Scream or Urban Legend, which I don't really mind because I have more of a fond sense of nostalgia towards that.

Also if you really want to ruin your enjoyment of it, the main character is a young Jeffrey Donovan, so just say "When you're a spy" literally every time he comes onscreen

I usually just enjoy movies for what they are. I tend not to think about them too much and don't notice plotholes or plot conveniences most of the time if they aren't too blatant. I do however notice shitty directing, bad dialouge and shitty acting. Usually i am glad people point out things i missed and it does retroactively change how i think about a movie.
bein able to turn your brain off and just enjoy stuff can be helpful at times.

Idris Elba is a legitimately good actor, all the memes kinda ruined him. Too bad he hardly picks anything good to star in, must have a shit agent

Idris is good but I lost a lot of respect for him when I found out he's a footgay who made Kate Winslet keep her socks on during their sex scene so that he wouldn't get genuinely aroused.

Video games absolutely have the capacity to become some of the most fun an interesting stories that can be put to film but are lamented and treated poorly by writers so we will never get anything of value out of what without question could be massive amounts of interesting and exciting worlds to explore through film.

I unironically think that visual novels can completely encapsulate Aristotle's Six Elements of Drama in a revolutionary way and has the potential to be among some of the highest forms of art and media
We just haven't had a visual novel that good come out

Yume Miru Kusuri satisfies these tenets and moreover if you complete all the routes an important part of the underlying theme is contextualized by revealed content. In fact it is possible to frick all of the heroines but doing so will end the VN prematurely with the MC having learned nothing.

As literature goes it openly tells you where it stands (an eroge that transcends porn but recognizes itself) but structurally it's flawless and got solid TL work Mizuki, Aeka then Nekoko in that order.

I guess my hottest take is that movies stopped evolving as a form of art/expression in the 50s/60s at the latest and have little to no artistic value today besides being popcorn entertainment and vehicles for social engineering. Today, movies are even lower than video games in my opinion.

Showgirls was a satire of 1960s Doris Day/Rock Hudson "career girl makes it big in the city and makes her boss fall for her" movies but most critics didn't catch what Eszterhas was aiming for and thought it was just sleaze for its own sake.

The stupidity/absurdity and overacting in live action anime doesn’t make the movies bad, it makes them ultra kino. Plebs are just getting filtered and aren’t realizing the kino they’re witnessing.
