They would have most likely said something weird and alien, like most characters do in su for some reason, so yeah there is ac chance for them to say what you have written.
Yeah, even as a little kid, I thought this was weird. I also thought they could've just said the gems were aunts. Plus I also thought about the overall implications about how the gems lived their for decades and made minimal attempts to hide the presence, and no attempt after they met Greg, and yet they're treated like a secret society.

yeah this show always felt like nobody ever taught it thru
there mightve been like, idk, one or two people in the room who acually wanted to write the whole space alien secret ancient civilization thing at one point
but then it all got overtaken by kiddiewiddie shit and interpersonal drama so it all feels out of place

On the contrary, the first season of the show felt very well thought through. There was a very slow and steady lore drip, gem shit in pretty much all the townie episodes, and big dramatic culminations at the half season mark and finale. Season two wasn't much worse but it kept fraying from there probably for the reasons you say - lack of a single controlling vision in the writers' room.
This is the episode when Steven introduces a gigantic six-armed two-faced monstrosity to them as his mother who subsequently divides into three aliens and Connie's parents reaction is to be pleased so long as he gets grounded for 1000 years? Keep thinking about it OP.

honestly it's one of the few dud episodes the show has in the first two seasons, only thing particularly worthwhile about it is that Connie's outfit in it is one of her cutest looks
